Research paper thumbnail of A test of the Social Identity Model of Cessation Maintenance: The content and role of social control

Addictive Behaviors Reports, 2016

Engagement with self-help groups is a predictor of positive outcomes for those attempting to cont... more Engagement with self-help groups is a predictor of positive outcomes for those attempting to control their addictive behaviours. In common with other groups, self-help groups have to manage non-normative ('deviant') behaviour to ensure the social values of the group remain preserved, and the group can fulfil its aims. These processes may protect group members from relapse. Drawing on the Social Identity Model of Cessation Maintenance, the current study asked a number (n = 44) of attendees of fellowship (AA/NA/CA) and of SMART groups to list behaviours they saw as normative and deviant, and rate a variety of responses to deviant behaviours. Costs of relapse to both the self and the group were also measured alongside self-efficacy regarding cessation and identity as both an active addict and as a member of a self-help group. Results suggest that social control responses to deviance grouped into education, punishment and avoidant type responses. More social control was perceived by highly identifying self-help group members. Educational responses were seen as used by groups more extensively than other responses. Punishment responses were mediated by the perceived costs an individual's relapse incurred on the rest of the group. These findings inform our understanding of what standards of normative and deviant behaviour self-help groups hold, and how they react to violations of such norms. They also have a number of implications for practitioners and facilitators in regard to using social identities as part of the treatment process.

The onset is usually after puberty and the most common presentation is pain that is usually self-limited, but may progress. The etiology and optimal treatment for the disease are unknown. We present the case of a 39-year-old Hispanic man with clinical and radiological manifestations of Ribbing disease. Radiographs and CT imaging demonstrated typical cortical thickening in the mid-diaphyses of the tibiae bilaterally that correlated with intense tracer uptake on 99m Tc-MDP bone scans. MRI demonstrated cortical thickening and abnormal marrow signal consistent with marrow edema. Bone marrow edema may explain the pain frequently associated with the disease. Multiple serum and urine markers of bone metabolism were within normal limits. In an effort to ameliorate pain, the patient was treated with the bisphosphonate, pamidronate. In spite of treatment, pain increased, requiring additional and larger doses of analgesics. Serial radiographs, CT, bone scans, and MRI all demonstrated disease progression with pamidronate treatment. In this report we present for the first time the finding of bone marrow edema with MRI as well as disease progression during intravenous pamidronate treatment.

In this study stable isotope ratio analysis was investigated as a means of determining the origin of the methylamphetamine precursors, ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine may be prepared industrially by several routes. Results are presented for the stable isotope ratios of carbon (d 13 C), nitrogen (d 15 N) and hydrogen (d 2 H) measured in methylamphetamine samples synthesized from ephedrine and pseudoephedrine of known provenance. It is clear from the results that measurement of the d 13 C, d 15 N and d 2 H stable isotope ratios by elemental analyzer/thermal conversion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA/TC-IRMS) in high-purity methylamphetamine samples will allow determination of the synthetic source of the ephedrine or pseudoephedrine precursor as being either of a natural, semi-synthetic, or fully synthetic origin.

We investigated the effect of screen reflections on accommodation response by producing reflections (1.33 D accommodation demand) surrounding and overlying the fixation point (2 D accommodation demand) in the screen. We have found little evidence that reflections in visual display terminal screens can influence the accuracy of the users' accommodation responses under normal binocular viewing conditions. The accuracy of the accommodation response was not significantly influenced by the position of the reflections, the presence of surrounding text (peripheral cues), or the subjects' dark focus level. Tbe variability of accomm(xlation response did not significantly change under the various test conditions. However, accommodation errors were apparent to a small degree (< 0.25 D) under some monocular viewing conditions in the presence of screen reflections.

Schemes undertaken along the Southern coastline of England reveal that the presence of fine-grained material in the sediments can lead to the formation of a more compact beach which has a lower permeability. This (generally) leads to the formation of a hard vertical face around high water mark as opposed to a mobile beach crest. Such features could reduce the sea defence and amenity values of beach replenishment schemes.

The Gulf of Corinth is a silled elongate basin with a maximum depth of 860 m; it is characterised by high seismicity. The red mud is discharged through a pipeline at a depth of 100 m, where it forms an extensive deposit. Grab sampling has shown that the red mud extends over the slope and the abyssal plain up to a distance of 17 km from the mouth of the pipeline. It forms small scattered sheetlike deposits of up to 3 cm in thickness. The structures observed in the scattered patches of the red mud, which in some places are overlain by a thin veneer of grey/olive green (natural) sediments, suggest that the red mud is transported from the shelf to the abyssal plain by gravitative sediment flows. The flows are triggered by earthquakes. Granulometric and geochemical analyses of the red-mud samples show that the red mud, during its transport from the shelf to the abyssal plain, is subjected to mixing with the surrounding sediments. A different mixing ratio is determined, however, by reference to the various trace metals (Fe, Ni, CO, Pb).

To date, much research has focused on the usability of these networks in a variety of environments where conventional wired networks may not be feasible. However, less emphasis was placed on the security issues of employing a sensor network and its exposure to potential threats. Due to the severe physical constraints in sensor nodes, traditional cryptographic mechanisms are not suitable to deal with such potential security threats. This paper proposes a secure lightweight architecture that takes account of the constraints of sensor networks. With the use of a base station, a hierarchical network topology is formed that enables end-to-end communication between sensor nodes with the aid of intermediary nodes where necessary. The architecture also supports the detection and isolation of aberrant nodes.

Computer-assisted video analysis was used to measure relative eye position. Involuntary blinks were accompanied by retraction of the eye, which was of similar magnitude to the retraction measured with lids restrained, while the lids of the contralateral eye gently closed. Preliminary data suggests a small degree of instability of antero-posterior eye position between blinks. Our results are consistent with previous studies of the association between antero-posterior eye position and lid fissure width.
