Status Solidi~32 323 (1969)] has shown second-order effects in 6v to reduce-P, the bulk contribution to the work function, by 0. 1-0.2 eV for the alkalis andby 0. 3 and 0. 8 eV for Al and Mg, respectively. The second-order effect of 6u on the surface term &~tj must be determined, however, before any conclusions can be drawn concerning the net importance of (6v)~terms in 4'. BlBeference 19 gives also a second, much larger, value of x~for each of these metals, which leads to somewhat less satisfactory results for bulk properties. The work functions calculated with these r~'s are about 1 eV lower than those corresponding to the preferred set, giving an even greater discrepancy with experiment.

However, the physical meaning of corresponding quantities is different. For example, the role of the saddle-point configuration in rate theory is taken by a dynamical state in the dynamical theory. The reaction coordinate is shown to measure the extent to which lattice reaction forces barring the jump have been overcome by thermal fluctuations. Geometric considerations indicate that for vacancy diffusion, the factor~should have a lower limit on the order of 0. 5 in the fcc lattice and an upper limit of the same order for the bcc lattice. In general,m easures the mass dependence of the rms velocity of the system along the jump direction in configuration space. The mass dependence of the isotope effect for impurity. diffusion is developed, and adouble-isotope-effect experiment involving the simultaneous diffusion of three solute isotopes is proposed to determine impurity correlation factors.

Cutting, drilling, sculpting of all materials (biologic materials, ceramics, sapphire, silicon carbide, diamond, metals) occurs by new mechanisms that eliminate thermal shock or collateral damage. High-precision machining to submicron tolerances is enabled resulting in high surface quality and negligible heat affected zone.. . .

We also demonstrated an interferometric diagnostic that will be used to measure the scaling relationships governing pinhole closure in spatial filters.
