One of the major emphases of the new 6-year pharmacy curriculum is patient-centered clinical pharmacy, and it is expected that the students will leave the program with good communication skills not only with other health professionals but also with patients. Teaching pharmacy students to become excellent communicators is no easy task, and in the previous 4-year Japanese pharmacy curriculum, pharmacy practice and communication skills were deemphasized in favor of basic science, laboratory practice and research skills. One strategy to enhance students’ communication and critical thinking skills is the use of small group discussions and case-based learning. We evaluated the impact of a small group case-based discussion in a group of pharmacy students in Japan. Students’ motivation to learn clinical pharmacy and their perceptions of the importance of learning communication skills were evaluated...

The objective of this study was to compare full correction (FC) versus partial correction (PC) of elevated blood glucose in the ED on hospital length of stay. This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in an academic ED in the United States. Adult diabetic patients with hyperglycemia (blood glucose >200 mg/dL) in the ED who were treated with subcutaneous insulin were included. Patients were categorized based on the level of blood glucose control achieved within the first 24 hours from triage: (1) FC group for whom blood glucose <200 mg/dL was achieved or (2) PC group for whom blood glucose remained ≥200 mg/dL. The primary outcome measure was a comparison of hospital length of stay between groups. A total of 161 patients were included in this study (FC = 81, PC = 80). There was no signi...

The patient also exhibited the more common features of baclofen overdose including coma, respiratory depression, hypotonia, and hyporeflexia. A review of the literature and a discussion of the interesting manifestations and treatment of baclofen overdose are included.
