Brazil’s stories are representative of a new style of schoolgirl novel, with a less formal tone and, as Gillian Avery notes, a unique schoolgirl vernacular (207). The novels are also significant when considering childhood and pedagogy because of the way they register transitions in physical education and academic curricula for girls. Written in the early twentieth century, after the late-Victorian social and cultural shifts that placed more girls in schools for a longer duration, creating a literate ‘girl’ readership and girls’ culture, Brazil’s stories are a site in which a new vision of juvenile femininity is fully realized. As Sheila Fletcher remarks, Brazil gives her readers … an exciting sense of the changes that were overtaking girls’ schools; and team games, along with the gymnasium, laboratory, and the tentative discussion of careers, appear as emblems of that brave new world which was rising from its Victorian foundations. Research paper thumbnail of The response of 99Tcm-methylene diphosphonate and 99Tcm-hexametazime-labelled neutrophils to intra-articular steroid injection in rheumatoid arthritis

Significant neutrophil migration and MDP uptake occurred in the knees of patients with RA irrespective of the disease duration. In all but one patient neutrophil migration was reduced after intra-articular steroid injection. The change in MDP uptake after steroid injection was variable. There was a significant correlation between the percentage reduction in neutrophil migration and pain score, while the latter correlated poorly with the change in MDP uptake. The quantification of the neutrophil component of the inflammatory process is a sensitive index for monitoring RA activity and response to pharmacological interventions, while quantitative bone scintigraphy should not be employed to monitor changes in joint inflammation in patients with RA.

Research paper thumbnail of Cyanophenyloximes: Reliable and Versatile Tools for Hydrogen-Bond Directed Supramolecular Synthesis of Cocrystals

Crystal Growth & Design, 2006

Cyanophenyloximes are comparable to carboxylic acids, in terms of success rate, whereas the significantly less acidic CH3- and H-substituted analogues are not effective at generating cocrystals despite close similarities in steric and geometric parameters. The importance and validity of using experimental pKa values and calculated electrostatic potential surfaces as a basis for predicting the supramolecular yield of an O−H···N interaction for driving the formation of cocrystals (within a functional group class) is unambiguously established, and six new crystal structures of cocrystals assembled using oxime···heterocycle-based hydrogen bonds are presented.

Articles like “On Earning One’s Living,” “Female Clerks and Book-Keepers,” and “Nursing as a Profession” all appeared in the magazine’s first year. The Correspondence sections likewise discussed issues of employment. In response to her letter, “Isolated Hetty,” for example, is asked whether her elderly relatives would be inconvenienced by her seeking employment and, if not, she is advised “to apply to some hospital for nursing” and directed towards other numbers of the GOP, where “much has been said about” nursing as a profession. Alongside these informational articles and advice columns were fictional stories depicting working girls in their struggles to support themselves and their families while also remaining virtuous and pure. Despite this overt support for working girls, however, the p...

We also introduce a system for describing the environment from which a biological sample originates. The 'environmental packages' apply to any genome sequence of known origin and can be used in combination with MIMARKS and other GSC checklists. Finally, to establish a unified standard for describing sequence data and to provide a single point of entry for the scientific community to access and learn about GSC checklists, we present the minimum information about any (x) sequence (MIxS). Adoption of MIxS will enhance our ability to analyze natural genetic diversity documented by massive DNA sequencing efforts from myriad ecosystems in our everchanging biosphere.

Given this challenge, clinicians often struggle between restrictive and exclusionary diagnostic methods or overinclusive acceptance that ADHD is a prevalent and disabling problem. A modified version of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Rating Scale was administered to 468 students at a large midwestern university. Analysis of the results suggested that the degree of ADHD symptoms in college students is modest and indicated that cutoff scores of 4 for current symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity would be sufficient to identify a college student as distinct from the norm. Although it would be premature to accept the calculated thresholds completely, clinicians should be aware of these differences when evaluating college students for ADHD.

However, this ignores commonality in design and in components of these systems. However, for about 10 years it has been known that the addition of very small quantities ($100 ppm) of a flexible polymer such as poly-(ethylene oxide) can completely prevent rebound. This effect has for some time been explained in terms of the stretching of polymer chains by a velocity gradient in the fluid, resulting in a transient increase in the so-called ''extensional viscosity.'' Here we show, by measuring the fluid velocity inside the impacting drop, that the extensional viscosity plays no role in the antirebound phenomenon. Using fluorescently labeled DNA we demonstrate that the observed effect is due to the stretching of polymer molecules as the droplet edge sweeps the substrate, retarding the movement of the receding contact line.
