The massive increase in road transport, connected inter alia with the rapid development of suburbanisation based mainly on individual automobile transport, has caused many problems. This paper introduces some of those problems as manifested in Bratislava and its hinterland – from a geographical perspective – and outlines the way in which an unfavourable situation can be improved. The future of transport in Bratislava and its hinterland requires the creation of a multimodal transport system, which can effectively serve various transport requirements and ensure the mobility of inhabitants.

This article focuses on the analysis of public transport accessibility in district centres in Slovakia. The results show a decrease of connectivity in the network of direct bus and train connections and also a decrease in the number of direct connections between district centres in Slovakia in the period from 2003 to 2017. The main factors that have caused these changes include growing motorisation and individual automobile transport, zero-fare trains for selected categories of inhabitants since 2014, the construction of the motorway network, and the liberalisation of the public transport market.

They had a significant position in the economic development of many regions in Slovakia mainly in the first part of the 20 th century. Forest or field railways successively lost their original function. Many of them were abandoned and disassembled, but in some cases they have found new function and they serve for the purposes of tourism. The aim of this article is to present existing narrow-gauge railways in Slovakia and analyse their use for purposes of tourism. Particular attention is devoted to the best examples of their functioning in Slovakia-the Čiernohronská Railway, the Kysuce-Orava Forest Railway and the Tatra Electric Railways.

Regional disparities in railway accessibility were assessed based on the maximum distance from the commune to the nearest railway station and based on the mean weighted distance from the commune to the nearest railway station. The effect of closing the passenger transport on 15 regional tracks for the level of railway station accessibility was also assessed.

The paper discusses effects of transport infrastructure and regional accessibility on the regional development and the role of different barriers in the development of transport infrastructure. Accessibility of selected regions has been studied from two different aspects: public transport accessibility and individual automobile transport accessibility and at three different spatial levels i.e. the accessibility of selected boundary regions from other countries, accessibility of regional centres (Dolný Kubín and Humenné) from other towns in Slovakia, and accessibility of individual municipalities in regions from regional centres.

Accessibility of district towns was assessed by using six simple indices of accessibility. Some existing district towns are characterised by pour accessibility level and therefore some changes were proposed with the purpose of its improving. These changes are classified into three groups: re-location of district town on the basis of the mean weighed distance, establishment of new districts in extensive poor accessibility zones (30 and more km from the district town) and changes of boundaries of the districts based in proximity of villages to the district towns, followed by the effect of the changes on the accessibility level. This study stresses the necessity to apply the accessibility criterion in any administrative-territorial reform.

One of the most important processes influencing the formation of spatial structure of society is commuting and we assume that the character of commuting to work has also changed. The aim of this paper is to identify main changes in commuting in Slovakia and their spatial aspects and also to explain some facts that caused these changes. Data about commuting to work were obtained from population censuses in 1991 (the beginning of the transition) and 2001. The most significant change is decrease of the number of commuters, which commuted to other commune, from 998 thousand in 1991 to 796 thousand in 2001. The main reasons of this decline were reduction of high employment in agriculture and transformation and in many cases also decays of large industrial companies, which led to the increased number of unemployed and decrease of the number of commuters. We can also see many ch...

This paper analyses the impact of selected planned motorways and expressways (D1, A4, D3/S69, R1/R3/S7, and R4/S19) on the potential accessibility of the Polish-Slovak borderland with respect to the development of tourism. The most important investment project in Slovakia is the completion of the (started) D1 motorway. The R4/S19 and the R1/R3/S7 expressways and the D3 motorway/S69 expressway are expected to contribute to improved cross-border connections.

Accessible transport infrastructure (mainly the motorway network) has influenced many decisions concerning the location of industrial investments. The impact of transport infrastructure on the reduction of regional disparities in Slovakia is limited mainly due to the concentration of transport infrastructure investment in the more developed regions of Slovakia. Poorer regions in eastern Slovakia and the southern part of Central Slovakia are still affected by the unfavourable level of accessibility to the transport infrastructure that creates important conditions affecting their development.
