In general, it refers to a mode of operation of a laser when laser emission is produced in a series of pulses with peak power significantly higher than average emitted power and with repetition rate significantly higher than that of “normal” pulsed operation. Until recently, diode lasers were not available in the SP mode, which limited soft-tissue surgical capabilities of such systems compared with CO2 and solid-state-based systems.

The systems consist of a high voltage pulser and a coaxial laser triggered gas or liquid spark gap. The spark gap discharges into a pulse forming line designed to produce and maintain a flat voltage pulse for 1 ns duration on the cathode of a photodiode. A synchronized laser is used to illuminate the photocathode with a laser pulse to produce an electron beam with very high brightness, short duration and current at or near the space charge limit. Operation of the system is described and preliminary test measurements of voltages, synchronization and jitter are presented for a 5 MeV system. Applications in chemistry, and accelerator research are briefly discussed.

Supershort-term quasiperiodic Q-modulation of laser cavity was used for generation of stable subnanosecond pulses.

Trade-offs and advantages of different laser schematics are discussed.

Pulse energy up to 1 J with pulse duration of 0.7 ns at the wavelength of 1064 nm was achieved with very good beam quality. We demonstrated good agreement of computer simulation and experimental data.

A substantial variation of the delays of the beginning of lasing at the individual wavelengths is observed, depending on the pump-pulse-repetition rate, along with loss of the lasing at wavelengths 2.66 and 2.71 m as the pulse-repetition rate increases.

Single pulses are obtained with energy 3 mJ and width 30 ns at wavelength 2.81 µm.
