We compare measurements and calculations of the soliton properties and find good agreement for relations between the profile, width and intensity of the soliton, the applied voltage and material parameters. We find the solitons stable against perturbations both in the plane and perpendicular to the plane of the soliton for intensities large compared to the background intensity. ͓S1063-651X͑96͒50505-2͔

The crystal was pulled from a Li-rich solution (58-60 mol% of Li 2 O) having an SLN solid supplied from below in a slender platinum crucible. An inner crucible was also used to avoid bubble incorporation. With 1 mol% MgO doping, three inclusion-free SLN crystals were grown. The transmittance along the grown crystals was found satisfactory (7671%) having an absorption edge of 30371 nm. The small variation of the composition (Li/Nb ¼ 0.97570.005 and Mg/Nb ¼ 1.0770.02 mol%), refractive indices (n o ¼ 2:286 AE 0:0005 and n e ¼ 2:189 AE 0:0007), and the Curie temperature (1209.571.5 1C) further confirm ZLCz as a proven method for growing SLN single crystals.

Our theory explains earlier observations and provides a number of predictions which are verified experimentally. Finally, we show theoretically and experimentally that soliton spiraling can be controlled by the degree of mutual initial coherence. [S0031-9007(98)08048-X]

Research paper thumbnail of Improvements of uniformity and stoichiometry for zone-leveling Czochralski growth of MgO-doped LiNbO3 crystals

However, the finite crucible length can cause the variation of the zone length and thus the composition and stoichiometry, especially in the growth of a large diameter crystal. To solve the problems, several approaches were proposed for the growth of 4 cm-diameter 1 mol% MgO-doped SLN. The modification of the hot zone to minimize the zone variation was found useful for the uniformity, but the stoichiometry was inadequate even with the zone composition up to 60 mol% Li 2 O. A Li-excess feed was further used and a good Li/Nb ratio was obtained. Adding K 2 O (16 mol%) into the solution zone was useful as well, but it was inferior to using the Li-excess feed. In addition, a much lower growth rate was needed for getting an inclusion-free crystal.

These induced waveguides are f lexible and can be generated in any crystalline direction that allows soliton formation, and thus offer broad tunability (by rotation of the crystal), which cannot exist in fabricated waveguides.
