This new degree is focused on education based on competences acquisition, a factor that will help students to improve their professional skills development. In this sense, 2009 has been an important year in starting the process leading towards the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The first objective of this paper is to analyse the “state of the art” of the various existing Design Degrees in the European Union. From this point, the second objective is to perform an analysis of the different approaches made to address the same subject: university education in the area of product design knowledge. Finally, this paper aims to compare the grades already implemented at the European Union and the grades existing in Spain, in terms of structure, skills and teaching methodology, among others, in order to determine what degree of harmonization occur between them.

High fidelity virtual prototypes can be created more quickly and are more cost-effective than using traditional methods, but certain product features are still difficult to evaluate, resulting in perceptual differences when a product is assessed using different visualization techniques. In this paper, we report two case studies in which a group of participants evaluated different designs of a product typology (i.e., a watering can) as presented in VR, VR with passive haptics (VRPH) and in a real setting (R) for the first case study, and VR and R for the second case study. The semantic differential technique was used for product evaluation, and an inferential statistical method using aligned rank transform (ART) proceedings was applied to determine perceptual differences between groups. Our results showed that product characteristics assessed by to...

However, while some products may be perceived correctly in digital media, others may need physical contact. In this scenario, this work analyses how presenting a product highlighted for its haptic properties and the presence or absence of physical contact during the presentation can influence the perception of its attributes and stimulate purchase intention. To this end, an experiment was designed in which each participant viewed and interacted with a chair presented in five different means that elicited a greater or lesser sense of presence. Participants evaluated the product’s attributes on a semantic scale with bipolar pairs. No relation was found between the presentation means and users’ purchase intention. However, results showed significant differences in the evaluation of some physical characteristics depending on the presentation means, and the product was g...

Students of this discipline can consider this tool as an aid to publicize their work and an incentive to improve the quality of their proposals. This paper presents the results of an innovative educational project designed to enhance students achievement by improving their motivation and involvement. It was developed during the course 2012-13 in the compulsory subject 'Product Presentation', given in the third year of the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development at the Universitat Jaume I (Spain). The disciplines of this subject are related to the packaging and graphic design, spatial construction of scale models and advertising related to the presentation and diffusion of products. As part of the final project of this subject we have included activities in which students learn how to photograph and present their work on the Web in a professional way, by creating a blog. In it the students have made critical and constructive comments on the work of their peers, practicing and developing their reasoning skills. This proposal has had a very positive impact on the results of the course, reducing significantly the dropout rate compared to other previous courses and improving the average rating of the final work. Overall, the students have shown a greater interest and involvement in the course, knowing that their final work was going to have international diffusion in an academic blog, thus providing them with an added goal. The incorporation of this activity in the course for the first time has enabled students of the subject 'Product Presentation' to anticipate their needs on the way to the completion of their studies, to develop skills in enriching and necessary areas such as photography and new technologies offered by Web 2.0, to improve critical thinking and reasoning, and to publicize and promote their projects globally.

Research paper thumbnail of Web 2.0 Tools for Technical Teaching of Industrial Design. The Blog as a Resource for Learning, Critical Thinking and Dissemination of Results

In the ongoing improvement process of teaching in the European Higher Education Area we find ours... more In the ongoing improvement process of teaching in the European Higher Education Area we find ourselves with the challenge to introduce new work methods that are appropriated for each kind of activity, particularly those methodologies based on the resources provided by Web 2.0. In technical Degrees we often find highly practical subjects formed by several laboratory groups in which students develop the first three-dimensional concepts linked to a new product, and where it is required an active and critical attitude with the own work at every moment. This is the case of the compulsory subject ‘Modelmaking workshop’, taught in the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Developement at Universitat Jaume I (Castellón, Spain). This subject enables students to develop a series of practical exercises in which they can learn different techniques to carry out their own designs as experimental models. Although the outcome of the exercises is generally satisfactory it is detected a lack of student involvement and a little participatory attitude during the course. Therefore, it is considered appropriate to introduce collective activities that encourage student participation and self-evaluation, in order to enhance the ability of critical and analytical observation. This article presents the positive results of an educational improvement project that had four objectives: to introduce properly the new platforms of the Internet as a means of dissemination of projects, acquiring skills in photography, creating synergies among students in five groups of this subject and encourage analytical and critical spirit. To do this we proceeded to create a blog to host written content and pictures based on their projects. Students performed a critical-constructive analysis of the projects of their classmates, getting feedback of their work and obtaining enriching points of view that helped them to become aware of of the positive and negative aspects of the work done on the subject, allowing to establish a dialogue between the author of the project and the other students.

The project was implemented during 2013 in the compulsory subject 'Modelmaking Workshop', taught in the Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development. In the subject the students have to develop new conceptual products and build scale models using different materials and tools. The ultimate purpose of the project was to enhance students’ final performance in the subject through improving their motivation and involvement. For this aim we have focused on several objectives: to introduce web 2.0 tools as a means to publicize their work, to acquire professional skills in photography in order to present their projects properly, to create synergies among students and strengthen critical thinking. For that purpose, we created a blog in which students presented their projects and they assessed their peers, providing constructive points of view. The final result has been positive, and it is being considered the implementation of this methodology in future related subjects.

The development of the theoretical contents of the course is conducted through a discursive method reinforced and supported by various audiovisual methods. The practical exercises are developed in parallel with the theory, adapting to the different problems that arise for the student to confront the various aspects that are exposing and studying. The priority objective is for students to know to make graphic representations of industrial objects, which help to better understand the nature, size, volume and surface textures. These advanced visualizations are intended for the presentation of an idea prior to the industrial production of an object, and helps detecting the validity of a design in one of the first stages of its genesis. The presentation drawings are of great importance for the industrial designer, so the student should be able to make the representation of an industrial object by using different graphic techniques. These skills must be acquired through the realization of different exercises during the course, which is necessary both to practice analytical observation of the environment objects and demonstrate a high capacity of representation through the use of different graphic-design tools."
