Therefore, to make the traffic environment safe it is important to keep the driver alert and awake both in human and autonomous driving cars. A driver’s cognitive load is considered a good indication of alertness, but determining cognitive load is challenging and the acceptance of wire sensor solutions are not preferred in real-world driving scenarios. The recent development of a non-contact approach through image processing and decreasing hardware prices enables new solutions and there are several interesting features related to the driver’s eyes that are currently explored in research. This paper presents a vision-based method to extract useful parameters from a driver’s eye movement signals and manual feature ext...

Machine Learning (ML) adds a new dimension to DT by enhancing its functionality. Many studies on DT in the manufacturing industry have recently been published. However, there is still a lack of a systematic literature review on different aspects of ML-based DT in the manufacturing industry from a bibliometric and evolutionary perspective. Therefore, the proposed study is mainly aimed at reviewing DT in the manufacturing industry to identify the contribution of ML, current methods, and future research directions. According to the findings, the contribution of ML to this domain is significant. Additionally, the results show that the latest ML technologies are being used in the DT domain; neural networks have evolved based on application-specific requirements. The total number of papers and citations per paper on ML-based DT is...

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have recently been radically improved and ... more Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have recently been radically improved and are now being employed in almost every application domain to develop automated or semi-automated systems. To facilitate greater human acceptability of these systems, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) has experienced significant growth over the last couple of years with the development of highly accurate models but with a paucity of explainability and interpretability. The literature shows evidence from numerous studies on the philosophy and methodologies of XAI. Nonetheless, there is an evident scarcity of secondary studies in connection with the application domains and tasks, let alone review studies following prescribed guidelines, that can enable researchers’ understanding of the current trends in XAI, which could lead to future research for domain- and application-specific method development. Therefore, this paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) on the recent de...

It is agreed that without significant improvement in this domain, the safety objectives defined by international organisations cannot be achieved and a risk of more incidents/accidents is envisaged. Nowadays, computer science plays a major role in data management and decisions made in ATM. Nonetheless, despite this, Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is one of the most researched topics in computer science, has not quite reached end users in ATM domain. In this paper, we analyse the state of the art with regards to usefulness of AI within aviation/ATM domain. It includes research work of the last decade of AI in ATM, the extraction of relevant trends and features, and the extraction of representative dimensions. We analysed how the general and ATM eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) works, a...

In the medical literature there are a number of physiological reactions related to cognitive activities. Psychosocial and psychophysiological stress is such activities reflected in physiological reactions. Stress related symptoms are highly individual, but decreased hands temperature is the common for most individuals. A clinician learns with experience how to interpret the different symptoms but there is no adaptive diagnostic system for diagnosing stress. Decision support systems (DSS) for stress diagnosis would be valuable both for junior clinicians and as second opinion for experts. Due to the large individual variations and no general set of rules, DSS are difficult to build for this task. The proposed solution combines a calibration phase with case-based reasoning approach and fuzzification of cases. During the calibration phase a number of individual parameters and case specific fuzzy membership functions are established. This case-based approach may help the clinic...

This is recognised as very costly for industry and reduces productivity and competitiveness. Condition Monitoring and diagnostics is such an area where lack on knowledge and mistakes can have severe consequences for a company’s long term existence. Maintenance staffs, technicians and engineers also gain much experience during their every day work, often during many years, but there are rarely any good processes for experience sharing and reuse inside the organisations. In this paper we present an experience sharing system based on case-based reasoning and limited natural language processing. The system is a tool ...

This approach is widely used in order to develop Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS). A CDSS for diagnosis and treatment often plays a vital role and brings essential benefits for clinicians. Such a CDSS could function as an expert for a less experienced clinician or as a second option/opinion of an experienced clinician to their decision making task. This paper presents the case studies on 3 clinical Decision Support Systems as an overview of CBR research and development. Two medical domains are used here for the case studies: case_study_1) CDSS for stress diagnosis case_study_2) CDSS for stress treatment and case_study_3) CDSS for postoperative pain treatment. The observation shows the current developments, future directions and pros and cons of the CBR approach. Moreover, the paper shares the experiences of developing 3CDSS in medical domain in terms of cas...

Clinicians often base their diagnosis and decision on manual inspection of signals such as, ECG, heart rate, finger temperature etc. However, the complexity associated with the manual analysis and interpretation of the signals makes it difficult even for experienced clinicians. A computer system, classifying the sensor signals is one valuable property assisting a clinician. This paper presents a case-based system that assist a clinician in diagnosis and treatment of stress. The system uses a finger temperature sensor and the variation in the finger temperature is one of the key features in the system. Several artificial intelligence techniques such as textual information retrieval, rule-based reasoning, and fuzzy logic have been combined together with case-based reasoning to enable more reliable and efficient diagnosis and treatment of stress. The performance has been ...

Three-tier architecture with an object oriented approach was used. The DSS has a web enabled graphical user interface that presents alerts indicating non optimal dosage and states, new recommendations, namely typical advice with typical dose and statistical measurements. One data set was used for design and tuning of the FIS and another data set was used for evaluating performance compared with actual given dose. Overall goodness-of-fit for the new patients (design data) was 0.65 and for the ongoing patients (evaluation data) 0.98. User evaluation is now ongoing. The system could work as an assistant to clinical staff for Duodopa treatment in advanced Parkinson’s disease.

A system that can monitor and evaluate the human cognitive and physical capacities based on human factor measurement is often beneficial to improve safety in driving condition. However, analysis and evaluation of human factor measurement i.e. demographics, behaviour and physiology in real-time is challenging. This paper presents a methodology for cloud-based data analysis, categorization and metrics correlation in real-time through a H2020 project called SimuSafe. Initial implementation of this methodology shows a step-by-step approach which can handle huge amount of data with variation and verity in the cloud.

The stress questionnaire is a scientific screening instrument to understand individual's causes of stress in different parts of life e.g. in the work place and at home. The 38-item stress questionnaire (SQ) is developed to assess the appraisal of stress personally experienced in a patient's life. This questionnaire cannot diagnose any illness or psychological disorder. However it can be a helpful tool for developing the individual stress management plan by assessing data about the current demands of individual's life and work.
