The points Pi=(xi,yi)inC(mathbbQ)P_{i}=(x_{i},y_{i})\in C(\mathbb{Q})Pi=(xi,yi)inC(mathbbQ), i=1,2,...,k,i=1,2,...,k,i=1,2,...,k, are said to be in a geometric progression of length kkk if the rational numbers xix_{i}xi, i=1,2,...,k,i=1,2,...,k,i=1,2,...,k, form a geometric progression sequence in mathbbQ\mathbb QmathbbQ, i.e., xi=ptix_i=pt^{i}xi=pti for some p,tinmathbbQp,t\in\mathbb Qp,tinmathbbQ. In this paper we prove the existence of an infinite family of hyperelliptic curves on which there is a sequence of rational points in a geometric progression of length at least eight.

Prevalence was 74.9%. Female sex, older age, low body mass index, and fall on the ground were associated with osteoporosis. This study aims to identify osteoporosis prevalence in hip fracture admissions at the Trauma Unit of Assiut University Hospitals and to study the independent correlates of osteoporosis-related fracture. A prospective cross-sectional study was carried out in 275 hip fracture patients admitted to the Trauma Unit of Assiut University Hospitals from January through December 2014 of both sexes aged 50 years and older. Exclusion criteria were polytrauma, major accidents, and history of chronic conditions and long-term medication associated with osteoporosis risk increase and bilateral hip fractures. For every patient, weight, height, and bone mineral density by dual-e...

We construct infinite families of pairs of elliptic curves E 1 and E 2 over Q such that for each pair there exist infinitely many square-free rationals d for which the d-quadratic twists of E 1 and E 2 are both of rank at least 2.

Research paper thumbnail of Hypovitaminosis D Among Patients Admitted With Hip Fracture to a Level-1 Trauma Center in the Sunny Upper Egypt: Prevalence and Associated Correlates

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypovitaminosis D and related correlates among patients with hip fracture in Assiut University Hospitals in Upper Egypt. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in 133 patients with hip fracture, aged 50 years and older, admitted to Trauma Unit of Assiut University Hospitals, from January through December 2014. Patients were selected by systematic random sampling. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D level was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Weight and height measurements were used for body mass index (BMI) calculation. Results: Patients’ median age was 70 years (range: 50-99); 51.9% were females. Osteoporosis (femoral neck T score: 30 ng/mL). According to univariate analysis, vitamin D deficiency was significantly associated with obesity ( P = .012...

Research paper thumbnail of In vivo microscopic imaging of the bronchial mucosa using an endo-cytoscopy system

The newly developed ECS has a 3.2 mm diameter that can be passed through the 4.2 mm working channel of a mother endoscope for insertion of the ECS. It has a high magnification of 570× on a 17 in. video monitor. Twenty-two patients (7 squamous cell carcinoma, 11 squamous dysplasia and 4 after PDT therapies) were underwent white light, NBI light and AFI bronchoscopy. Both abnormal areas of interest and normal bronchial mucosa were stained with 0.5% methylene blue and examined with ECS at high magnification (570×). Histological examinations using haematoxylin and eosin staining were made of biopsied specimens. Analyzed ECS images were compared with the corresponding histological examinations. In normal bronchial mucosa, ciliated columnar epithelial cells...

Research paper thumbnail of Prostaglandin E2 receptor 2 overexpression in squamous cell carcinoma of the lung correlates with p16INK4A methylation and an unfavorable prognosis

In this study, we examined the correlation between PGE2 receptor 2 (EP2) expression and p16 INK4A methylation in NSCLC, and the association with clinicopathological features and prognostic significance. We retrospectively reviewed 88 NSCLC patients who underwent resection from July 1993 to May 1997. The tumors included 43 adenocarcinomas, 39 squamous cell carcinomas, and 6 large cell carcinomas. EP2 expression was determined by immunostaining, and p16 INK4A methylation was analyzed by methylation specific PCR. EP2 was overexpressed in 44% of NSCLC patients, 61% of adenocarcinoma cases, 28% of squamous cell carcinoma cases, and 33% of large cell carcinoma cases. EP2 expression positively correlated with lymph node metastasis (P=0.034), especially in patients with squamous cell carcinoma (P<0.009). Methylation of p16 INK4A was detected in 34% of NSCLC patients, 23% of adenocarcinoma cases, 44% of squamous cell carcinoma cases, and 50% of large cell carcinoma cases. In patients with squamous cell carcinoma, EP2 overexpression correlated with poor prognosis with a relative risk of 2.4 (confidence interval 2.1-51.8, P<0.003), and positively correlated with p16 INK4A methylation (P<0.024). Adenocarcinoma patients with p16 INK4A methylation had poor prognosis with a relative risk of 2.4 (confidence interval 1.8-69.7, P<0.009), but this was not correlated with EP2 expression. In conclusion, EP2 overexpression was common in NSCLCs, especially in adenocarcinomas. Synchronous alteration of p16 INK4A and EP2 may accelerate progression of squamous cell carcinomas. These two alterations may differentially affect pathogenesis among subtypes of NSCLC.

Research paper thumbnail of Outcomes of One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass in 472 Diabetic Patients

Obesity surgery, Nov 22, 2017

The positive impact of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on metabolic syndrome and glycemic control... more The positive impact of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on metabolic syndrome and glycemic control has been proven in obese patients. One anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is a simple, effective and easy to learn procedure. OAGB provides encouraging results for the treatment of diabetes obese patients, but does it have the ability to be an alternative procedure to RYGB in the treatment of these patients? The aim of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of OAGB on diabetic obese patients at the bariatric centre of our university hospital. By extension, we evaluated the possibility of BMI and the preoperative antidiabetic medication usage to be predictive factors for postoperative diabetes resolution. This is a retrospective single-centre study of 472 diabetic patients who underwent OAGB from November 2009 to December 2015. All patients were followed-up for at least 1 year, and up to 3 years, where available. Weight, HbA1c, and anti-diabetic medications were recorded at baseline, 3, 6...
