The effect of TIG current and welding speed was selected to study the mechanical properties, porosity, and macrostructure of the weld metal (WM). Based on experimental results, the top bead width (TBW) will increase directly proportional to the increased of welding current. Furthermore, welding current and welding speed affected the strength drop in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). More heat added will result in a deeper drop in strength. Mechanical properties result showed that the tensile strength reduced by 40 – 45% and the hardness reduction in the WM and HAZ area from the base metal (BM) was 17.3% and 27.7%, respectively. Subsequently, X-Ray radiography images showed that there was no large porosity occur in all welding current. The macrostructure showed that the weld bead typically has the concavity shape or U-s...

Research paper thumbnail of Study of Cross-Combination and Square-Combination Configuration Magnetic Field on Tungsten Inert Gas Welding

The external magnetic field effect to the arc plasma was observed using two cameras from the front view and side view. The depth of penetration and weld profile was investigated after welding. In this study, two types of magnets were employed; a 3 mm magnet with intensity ranging from 270-280 mT and a 5 mm magnet with 400-415 mT. Each configuration has three sub-configurations: forward, backward, and side, so there were 12 parameters in this study. The result shows that a cross-combination 5 mm magnet can increase weld penetration in any position, forward, backward or side deflection, and improve the depth-to-width ratio, however using 3 mm magnet did not influence the penetration significantly. Cross-combination has more stiffness and stability of the arc than square-combination. Most configurations have the same size weld bead widt...

The ER-5356 filler metal feeding method is used intermittently to find its effect on weld geometry, mechanical properties, microstructure, and chemical composition. The dimensions of the specimens used in this study were 120 mm × 50 mm, with a thickness of 3 mm. The ratio used is the configuration of the feed time and delay time. The length ratio of wire filler is varied from a ratio of 4 to 6. The top bead width and back bead width decreased by 17.66% and 40.33%, respectively. At a ratio of 6, it has the largest cross-sectional area of 295.37 ± 27.60 mm2. The results show that the general tensile strength was proportional to the ratio, but the difference was not significant, only around ±8 MPa. The microstructure formed in each weld has different characteristics; conversely, grains with a relatively coarse structure have decreased hardness values. The chemical composition test shows...

The type of welded joint used was square groove T-joint fillet weld with filler wire ER70S-6. The welding current and the welding speed were selected as input parameters while the response used was distortion (longitudinal bending distortion and angular distortion). Taguchi method was used to determine optimal welding parameters which the minimum distortion. Design of experiment was set two factors with three level in each factor and three replication, so the L9 Taguchi’s orthogonal array was applied. The minimum conditions were determined using S/N ratio with a quality character of smaller is better (SB). In addition, to determine the significance of the welding parameters used ANOVA. The results show that the welding current of 170 A and the welding speed of 4.0 mm/s were obtained as the minimum of longitudinal bending distortion and angular distortion. Based o...

Research paper thumbnail of Effects of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding parameters on macrostructure, microstructure, and mechanical properties of AA6063-T5 using the controlled intermittent wire feeding method

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2019

This paper presents an automated or intermittent wire feeding method in tungsten inert gas (TIG) ... more This paper presents an automated or intermittent wire feeding method in tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. The preliminary investigation shows the macrostructure, microstructure, and mechanical property effects on various welding parameters using one combination proportion of filler metal with various welding parameters. The result of microstructure has shown that the localized segregation occurred at the center area weld metal with high-density eutectic phase and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) study has found that Mg content was higher compared to the outside region. Other sample microstructure shows columnar structure was formed in dilution boundaries, and it reveals that fast cooling rates happened when the filler wire was inserted. Also, microstructure on weld traverse section shows that the wavy-like structure depended on the heat input. The fracture mode shows that lack of heat input is susceptible to oxidation; therefore, the fracture tends to occur at weld metal in the brittle manner with reduced strength of more than 40%. Also this article presented the method to calculate length ratio (R L) and the volume ratio (R V) to estimate the minimum value of ratio under the condition of a good welded surface profile.

Effect of tools geometry and dwell time on mechanical properties, and macrograph was investigated. The joints were successfully obtained with better surface appearance. The micro-hardness variation at 4 group location shows higher than the base metal, while the maximum micro-hardness was obtained at parameter TC-8 at the center of the weld. Macrograph analysis showed the important factor that brings the plug fracture in all combination of parameters. It was the upward bending hook that leads to the crack propagate along the stirred zone to the top sheet, resulted in tear-off the top sheet from the bounded region. Increasing dwell time and tools size will increase the maximum tensile shear load significantly. The best average value of maximum tensile shear load that has been achieved was 561±24 N using the param...

In welding process there are many factors that can affect the welding results. One of them is the orientation angle and interaction distance between plate and torch. Therefore, a method to find an angle and a distance between plate and welding torch so then it can be used as a part of the welding simulator was developed. The required components are webcam in laptop used as a video tracking device, two sets of marker, and ARToolKit as software library. After the interaction and orientation method was successfully built, a measurement for the interaction method to get a relation between actual distance and virtual distance was performed. The result will receive a comparison value from 27 to 28 pixels per centimeter with specified limitation. Then for orientation method, standard deviation and root mean square error (RMSE) of an angle was measured. This is the first stage of development in welding simulator. Further development is required to get a more advanced welding simulator.
