Research paper thumbnail of Utility of 3D printing of left atrial appendages for closure with Watchman Devices and comparison of computed tomography and transesophageal echocardiography based models

The Southwest Respiratory and Critical Care Chronicles

Three dimensional (3D) printed cardiac models are useful for WATCHMAN device procedural planning,... more Three dimensional (3D) printed cardiac models are useful for WATCHMAN device procedural planning, sizing, and complication reduction. These models also provide accurate representation of dynamic heart anatomy, helping practitioners determine their procedural approach and select proper device sizing. While the efficacy of 3D models obtained from Computed Tomography and Transesophageal Echocardiography over 2D Transesophageal Echocardiography imaging for WATCHMAN procedural planning has been demonstrated, this project aims to directly compare 3D Computed Tomography versus 3D Transesophageal Echocardiography and determine which is more favorable. Computed Tomography and Transesophageal Echocardiography 2D imaging studies from patients that underwent LAA WATCHMAN closure device implantation we used as templates for 3D cardiac models. These 3D models were scored using a 10-point Likert questionnaire. Scoring was conducted by a diverse team that included cardiologists, research specialist...

A pre- and post-survey administered to participants showed increased knowledge and improved impressions of cardiology. The students ranked the experience as high quality. This project suggests that similar elective experiences could enhance education during the preclinical period of medical education. Research paper thumbnail of Cardiorespiratory Failure in Thyroid Storm: Case Report and Literature Review

Journal of clinical medicine research, 2018

Cardiopulmonary failure is the most common cause of death in thyroid storm. Clinicians should keep in mind that thyroid storm complicated with cardiopulmonary failure can be the first presentation of thyrotoxicosis. As early intervention is associated with improved patient outcome, prompt diagnosis based on clinical grounds is of paramount importance in the management of thyrotoxicosis. A high index of suspicion and the ability of early recognition of impending thyroid storm depends on a thorough knowledge of both the typical and atypical clinical features of this illness. Herein, we report a case of thyroid storm presenting as cardiopulmonary failure in a 51-year-old woman with undiagnosed Grave's disease. Additionally, we review the pathophysiology of cardiopulmonary failure associated with thyrotoxicosis and various treatment modalities for thyroid storm.

Previous studies revealed that this drug may reduce nitric oxide (NO) in an in vitro inflammatory model. The aim of the present study was to investigate the anti‑inflammatory effect of Migri‑Heal® on primary mix glial cells stimulated with LPS. In the current study, neonatal rat primary mix glial cells were isolated from the mixed glial cultures via shaking, and cultured in Dulbecco's' modified Eagle's medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum. Following pretreatment with Migri‑Heal® (25, 75, 100, 150, 200 and 300 µg/ml) and cells were treated with LPS (10 µg/ml) for 1 h, and incubated for 48 h. The present study determined that 150 µg/ml Migri‑Heal® significantly reduced the production of NO in rat mix glial cells stimulated with 10 µg/ml LPS. Migri‑Heal® also suppressed mRNA expression level of LPS‑induced inducible nitric oxide synthase and tumor necrosis factor α, ...

Research paper thumbnail of MicroRNA-149 is epigenetically silenced tumor-suppressive microRNA, involved in cell proliferation and downregulation of AKT1 and cyclin D1 in human glioblastoma multiforme

Biochemistry and cell biology = Biochimie et biologie cellulaire, 2016

Aberrant DNA methylation has been shown to inactivate tumor suppressor genes during carcinogenesi... more Aberrant DNA methylation has been shown to inactivate tumor suppressor genes during carcinogenesis. MicroRNA-149 (miR-149) was recently demonstrated to function as a tumor suppressor gene in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). However, the potential linkage of miR-149 levels and the underlying epigenetic regulatory mechanism in human GBM has not been studied. We used quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction to investigate the levels of miR-149 in GBM tissues, their matched adjacent normal tissues, and glioblastoma U87MG cell line. Using bisulfite genomic sequencing technology, DNA methylation status of upstream region of miR-149 was evaluated in study population groups and the U87MG cell line. After treatment of cells with 5-aza-2'-deoxycitidine (5-aza-dC), the DNA methylation status, gene expression, and target protein levels of miR-149 were investigated. Our studies revealed that methylation and expression levels of miR-149 were significantly increased and decreased, respec...
