Research paper thumbnail of Improving Ideal Performance of Hollow Fiber Carbon Membrane for H2/N2 Separation

The ideal separation parameters were enhanced by tuning the pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, and thermal soak time utilizing the Robeson's 2008 upperbound and commercial boundary to obtain maximum balanced point between permeability and ideal selectivity. Using this approach, the optimum H2 permeability and H2/N2 ideal selectivity was 2868 Barrer and 586, respectively. SEM images depicted the surface of the PPO and carbon membranes were both dense, non-porous, symmetrical, and homogeneous. The estimated thickness of the carbon membranes was 14-15 µm. The permeability study indicated that the transport mechanism of the H2 across the membrane layer was dominated by molecular sieving. Excessively high or very low pyrolysis temperature reduced the H2 permeability and H2/N2 ideal selectivity. The H2/N2 ideal selectivity decreased against increasing heating rate as the H2 and N2 permeabilities increased significantly. Thermal soak time was highly effective in increasing the H2 permeability and H2/N2 ideal selectivity. Both H2 permeabilities and H2/N2 permselectivity from the binary test were considerably lower than the ideal separation values due to competitive gas transport through the membrane pore which was completely dominated by the larger N2.

The perception of smallholder farmers plays an important role in utilising ICT as tools for improving their agriculture and business activities. Agriculture provides the main and raw source of foods for humans. Agricultural activities have been developed intensely in modern techniques and activities depending on the country, culture, and environment, such as the global climate and sustainability. Malaysia still imports food, as local providers cannot support the supply and demand within the country. Hence, the government has introduced many initiatives to support the agricultural industry to produce more food for local needs. Instead of introducing agricultural programmes and educating farmers, the government is focusing on the use of agric...

A large number of different types of parts forces manufacturers to improve the method of supplying parts on the assembly line. This paper presented an innovation system of supplying parts called Set Parts Supply (SPS) which has been implemented in a mixed-model assembly line. The basic idea of SPS is the process of selection parts and assemble parts are done by different operator at different area. This research is concentrated on the activities in SPS implementation and the design consideration for the equipment through a case based approach. After the implementation, it can be ascertained that the inventory has been reduced, the reduction of waste can be achieved and the shop floor are well–organized.

A questionnaire survey is used to explore the difference in pre-development implementation practices between radical and incremental new product development (NPD) projects. The survey was performed at 164 food and beverage manufacturing SMEs. The respondents were chosen from those who are directly involved with pre-development practices, such as the owner/CEO of the SMEs. The analysis was conducted using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software version 17. Descriptive statistics and independent-samples t-test were carried out to generate and validate the results observed. The significant difference values for independent-samples t-test is less than .05 (p≤0.05). Survey results revealed the differences in pre-development implementation practices between radical and incremental NPD projects for several activities in pre-development phases. Incremental ...

Research paper thumbnail of Child Performers in the Entertainment Industry: An Analysis from the Employment Regulations Perspective

Child stars who enter the entertainment industry at a young age are often robbed off their normal childhood and being transformed into money-making machines for their parents and managers and wooed enthusiastically by fans as celebrities throughout history. From the employment law perspectives, child performers are child labours requiring particular care and protection as many aspects of the workplace or their work activities represent a potential level of risk which are higher for children than adults' performers. International Labour Convention and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) provide guidelines as to appropriate measure to protect children in workplace. Developed countries which are hubs for entertainment such as Canada, USA and UK have specific rules imposed for the rights of the children in the entertainment industry.

Motorola is the company that developed this mechanism in order to reduce their cost and increase their profits. However, Six Sigma also can be used in other industries such as airlines, music, marketing, services and many more. Based on present literature, there is still ample research to be done when applying this principle to Malaysian lawyers. This article attempts to examine the problem of applying the Six Sigma principle to Malaysian lawyers. The law profession provides services and it is difficult to measure the performance of law firms when providing services for their clients. However, it is our intent to show how relevant performance is in the very first place and how it generates benefits for law firms in Malaysia. To end this, we aim to open the "black box", which can help Malaysian lawyers and their law firms. Understanding this principle may help to shed some light on how lawyers can provide better services and increase their performance for the clients.

Statistical Process Control (SPC) is one of the quality improvement practices companies employ to ensure the reliability of their products, thus increasing customer satisfaction. This paper aims to present the recent development of a computer-based SPC system to be used by operators or shop-floor workers to perform simple data analysis, as well as to enhance the efficiency of the improved process. Ideas and information concerning system development are generated through an in-depth case study at ten SME companies, featuring interviews, questionnaires and observation. The system, namely small and medium enterprises-statistical process control (SMEs-SPC), tends to focus on particular data sets, simple statistical operations and user groups. The findings show that the SMEs-SPC system is highly practical for quality data management and data analysis and has advantages over the manual SPC. Furthermore, it is suitable for users with a limited understanding of SPC and/or statistical background, highlighting the importance of SPC.

This paper considers the problem of most electronic industries in reducing costly materials, by introducing a solder paste with alloy composition tin 98.3%, silver 0.3%, and copper 0.7%, used for the construction of the surface mount fine-pitch component on a Printing Wiring Board (PWB). The reliability of the solder joint between electronic components and PWB is evaluated through the dynamic characteristic test, thermal shock test, and Taguchi method after the printing process. After experimenting with the dynamic characteristic test and thermal shock test with 20 boards, the solder paste was still able to provide a high-quality solder joint. In particular, the Taguchi method is used to determine the optimal control parameters and noise factors of the Solder Printer (SP) machine, that affects solder volume and solder height. The control parameters include table separation distance, squeegee speed, squeegee pressure, and table speed of the SP machine. The result shows that the most significant parameter for the solder volume is squeegee pressure (2.0 mm), and the solder height is the table speed of the SP machine (2.5 mm/s).
