To satisfy the functional requirements, the adjacent buildings are constructed with equal and unequal heights, which may cause great damage to structures during earthquakes. To mitigate the amount of damage from pounding, the most simplest and effective way is to provide minimum separation distance. To study the effect of structural pounding, a case study has been done on different setback ratios (Area & Height) and to investigate the minimum seismic pounding gap between two adjacent structures by using GAP joint element & non- linear time history analysis. In this paper seismically deficient structures are studied by carrying out the Pushover analysis of frame structures using SAP Software. Building get deformed because of the lateral and seismic forces acting on the structure. Forces increased as per the height of structure : low rise structures have higher resonant frequency and hence lower frequency high rise structures are studied. In this paper, the following activities are taken up to draw the results. Study of various earthquake and pushover forces acting ,formation of hinges and their implementation available in the literature evaluating the real strength of the structure and damage assessment of the multistoried building structures.

An experimental program was carried out to explore its effects on compressive, tensile, flexural strength under different curing condition. The main aim of the investigation program is to study the effect of Polypropylene fiber mix by varying content such as 0% ,0.5%,1%,1.5% & 2% and finding the optimum Polypropylene fibre content. The concrete specimens were tested at different age level for mechanical properties of concrete, namely, cube compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength. A detailed study was carried out for curing conditions. Half of the concrete specimens were left exposed to the surrounding to cure by themselves and the remaining half were cured in a curing tank. Initially the concrete specimen's shows appreciable strength for irregular curing but as the days advances the curing specimens ga...

Lot of work has been reported by many researchers who worked to study the effect of structures with irregular plan and shape. Being inspired from the work contributed in the study on effects of earthquake on irregular shaped building in plan, this paper presents effects of plan and shape configuration on irregular shaped structures. Buildings with irregular geometry respond differently against seismic action. Plan geometry is the parameter which decides its performance against different loading conditions. The effect of irregularity (plan and shape) on structure have been carried out by using structural analysis software STAAD Pro. V8i. There are several factors which affect the behavior of building from which storey drift and lateral displacement play an important role in understanding the behaviour of structure. Results are expressed in form of graphs and bar charts. It has been observed from the re...

This building category is known as the setback building. Various researchers have studied the behavior of setback buildings by taking into account different approaches, which revolve mainly around geometric, mass, stiffness and different methods of seismic analysis. But the value of critical setback ratio for which the structure is less prone to earthquake forces has not been reported. Hence, a need has risen to study and specify some improvements in codal provisions for understanding the behavior of setback buildings. Reference structure results were adopted for validation of results obtained from all these models, which helped us to reach the desired output of the task. Nodal displacement and storey drift criteria was considered for ascertaining the optimum value of critical setback ratios. The optimum ...

India has a great population due to urbanization and that creates a challenge on structural designers to make use of acute space effectively. Constructing new structures is not always a choice especially in compact areas of city. Hence, utilizing reserved strength of existing structure will help to achieve economy as well as heritage. Most of the old structures need a retrofitting (up gradation of strength) due to many reasons like changing environmental condition, revision of codal provisions, revision of zones of India and improper supervision of structures. To depict the potential of retrofitting technique over existing structures, an attempt is made to upgrade the existing structure in the vicinity of Amravati region (M.S.). Existing structure was constructed with open ground storey without consideration of infill wall during analysis (Prior to t...

Past earthquakes, indeed, have shown that buildings with irregular configuration or asymmetrical distribution of structural properties are subjected to an increase in seismic demand, causing greater damages. The sources of irregularity in a building configuration can be multiple and of different kinds and are usually classified in two major categories: irregularities in plan and in elevation [1].Both these types of irregularity often entail the development of brittle collapse mechanisms due to a local increase of the seismic demand in specific elements that are not always provided with sufficient strength and ductility. Among the two aforementioned types of structural irregularity, in-plan irregularity appears to have the most adverse effects on the applicability of the classical nonlinear static procedures (NSPs), precisely because such methods have been developed for the seismic ass...

Newton-Raphson method is employed to solve nonlinear equations. The formulation is developed in polar co-ordinates. Hence, it is easy and convenient to impose boundary conditions at nodes on curved and oblique boundaries. Two computer programs are developed for the linear and non-linear analysis of moderately thick annular sector plate based on developed formulations. Various numerical are being solved with clamped and simply supported boundary conditions. The results are presented in suitable format and compared with available literature. It is felt that the work presented in this book will be a good contribution in field of structural engineering.

The reason for its extensive use is that it provides good workability and can be moulded to any shape. Ordinary cement concrete possesses a very low tensile strength, limited ductility and little resistance to cracking. Internal micro cracks, leading to brittle failure of concrete. In this modern age, civil engineering constructions have their own structural and durability requirements, every structure has its own intended purpose and hence to meet this purpose, modification in traditional cement concrete has become mandatory. It has been found that different type of fibers added in specific percentage to concrete improves the mechanical properties, durability and serviceability of the structure. It is now established that one of the important properties of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete (SFRC) is its superior resistance to cracking and crack propagation. In this paper effect of fibers on the strength ...

When a structure is subjected to an earthquake excitation, it interacts the foundation and soil, and thus changes the motion of the ground. It means that the movement of the whole ground structure system is influenced by type of soil as well as by the type of structure. Tall buildings are supposed to be of engineered construction in sense that they might have been analyzed and designed to meet the provision of relevant codes of practice and building bye-laws. IS 1893: 2002 “Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures” gives response spectrum for different types of soil such as hard, medium and soft. An attempt has been made in this paper to study the effect of Soil-structure interaction on multi storeyed buildings.
