Often, and especially during the Covid-19 pandemics, prevention health programs are stalled due to other policy priorities. Costbenefit analysis (CBA) can be used for the economic evaluation of public health programs to support evidence-based health policies and allows the comparison of the monetized effects of programs across different societal domains. However, CBA requires a variety of data that are typically difficult to obtain. Using the Incredible Years (IY) parenting program case, we illustrate how CBA can be practically applied. For parenting programs, the positive effects arise exclusively in non-monetary form as benefits arising from avoiding adverse effects in society. We show how to monetize them by estimating the avoided costs of healthcare, educational, and other societal costs due to the program's implementation. At...

Charge collection and trapping mechanisms in h-BN epilayers have been investigated by probing impurity related optical emissions under an applied electrical field. Our results suggested that the existence of oxygen impurities affects the charge collection efficiency and results in an additional emission peak at 3.75 eV, corresponding to a donor-acceptor pair (DAP) recombination involving O N (oxygen residing on the nitrogen site) donors and the V B-H (boron vacancy bonded with hydrogen complex) deep level acceptors. Experimental results further revealed that the applied electric field induces an anti-correlation between the emission intensity of the DAP transition and the charge collection efficiency from which it was shown that it is possible to find an expression to quantitatively measure the maximum charge collection efficiency in h-BN. The results introduce not only a coherent picture for the relationship between common impurities in h-BN and charge collection and trapping mechanisms but also useful insights into possible approaches to improve the quality, purity, and charge collection of the h-BN epilayers.

The existing research has extensively studied the effect of strategy on organizational performance. There is also a growing body of literature suggesting that RMS positively influence the achievement of organizational objectives. However, there are only a few conceptual papers (and no empirical evidence) on the relationship between strategy and RMS. We investigate whether different strategy types (defender, analyzer, prospector, and reactor) induce different levels of RMS development and, hence, affect performance indirectly, as well as directly. We use regression analysis and survey data to test the proposed relationships. Our results confirm the direct effects of strategy type and RMS development on performance. We confirm that prospectors perform better than defenders, analyzers, and reactors across five measures of performance (profitability, sales growth, market share, new product development, and customer satisfaction). We also find that companies with more developed RMS perform better in terms of non-financial performance (measured by new product development). Contrary to the prevailing evidence, we do not find significant results for financial performance. Moreover, our findings show that there is no mediating effect of RMS development in the relationship between strategy type and performance. This implies that RMS and strategy act as independent variables, each individually affecting organizational performance.

We investigate whether this concept holds the potential to become a contextual variable in research on Management Control Systems (MCS) because CC arguably relates to the design and use of MCS, and to organisational performance. Using a mixed methods approach (literature review, interviews, a cross-sectional survey, confirmatory factor analysis-CFA), we develop and validate an instrument for measuring CC as a group-level variable. We find CC has two dimensions: (1) analytical enthusiasm (enthusiasm for advanced analytical methods); and (2) numerical pragmatism (pragmatism in number interpretation). We characterise four types of CC found in top management teams: (1) smart enthusiasts; (2) extreme sceptics; (3) irrational sceptics; and (4) extreme enthusiasts. Finally, we empirically confirm that CC acts independently alongside other contextual variables, such as size, age, industry, ownership structure, strategy type, (geographic) market orientation, perceived organisational performance relative to competitors, and business environment uncertainty. ERM encompasses activities and strategies which enable the company to systematically identify, measure, reduce or exploit, as well as to control and monitor the exposure to various types of corporate risks-strategic, fi nancial, operational, reporting as well as compliance risks. By considering the interactive effects of different risk events, ERM offers a balance between the dual nature of risk-ensuring effective protection from threats and seizing the opportunities. This paper explores the association between ERM and a set of fundamental value determinants of S&P 500 non-fi nancial companies over the period from 2003 to 2012. Contrary to arguments found in the existing ERM literature, ERM companies did not experience a positive effect on most of the value drivers. We fi nd that ERM is associated with lower expected growth rates within one to two years after the ERM adoption, indicating that ERM could even have a negative effect on the company's fundamental value. On the other hand, the study showed that ERM is associated with higher free cash fl ows after six years of its use. Our research thus found indicative evidence that ERM produces some positive effects over a longer term, as well as some negative immediate effects, which could be explained with the increased risk aversion of ERM companies. However, since the tested models are explorative in nature, more theoretical and empirical research is needed to establish how ERM really works within a company.

The majority of companies are recognizing the need to do business electronically. However, most companies are currently still at the beginning stages: e-business does not reach operational processes indepth. Changes in the way a business is carried out influence business performance analysis. We argue that this happens mainly in the areas of customers, employees, intangibles, operational processes and also finance. For CEE e-business companies, at their present stage of development, the most important area is customer analysis. We present and discuss a number of measures that can be used to evaluate these areas and draw attention to some differences between traditional and e-business companies.

The paper investigates the joint effects of using total quality management (TQM) and performance ... more The paper investigates the joint effects of using total quality management (TQM) and performance management systems (PMSs) on the importance managers place on five different performance perspectives. Our study extends the current knowledge on the simultaneous use of multiple managerial concepts. Contrary to other studies of TQM and PMSs, we take into account that their effects are not independent from the use of other managerial concepts. Controlling for contextual variables and the use of other managerial concepts, we test the effects of joint TQM-PMS use on crosssection data from a sample of 264 companies. We find that the joint use is associated with a decrease in the perceived importance of customer perspective. This implies that only the importance of the customer measures changes for managers because they use TQM and PMS. One possible explanation for this result is that TQM companies over-emphasise the customer perspective which is 'counterbalanced' if PMS is jointly used. For other perspectives (employee, operational, return, and financial), we find only weak evidence of interdependencies between TQM and PMSs.

This is the first empirical study that brings evidence on the effect of ERM on the value of non-financial companies and that explores not only the market reaction to the ERM announcement, but also the investors' perception of long-term ERM usage. Our research shows evidence that ERM has a positive effect on the market value for a short period of time following the announcement of ERM implementation. After 2.67 years, the market premium for ERM companies fades away, so a company does not have a higher market value just because it has ERM. Our results indicate that ERM does not contribute to a company's market value in the long term.

The purpose of this paper is to explore how contextual factors (such as company size, industry, and market position), business objectives and knowledge about contemporary management tools influence the decision to implement Balanced Scorecard or similar integrated performance management systems. We tested our research propositions regarding the influence of these factors by using survey data and a logistic regression model. The study is based on a survey conducted in 2008 on a sample of 323 Slovenian companies. The sample consists of large, medium, and small firms from different industrial sectors, including manufacturing and service. Overall, our results confirm contextual factors, such as company size and industry, and knowledge about management tools as most important determinants of integrated performance measurement systems usage. Although market position and business objectives also receive some support for their influence, the results are generally weaker and more ambiguous.
