As predicted, maximum gas absorption has been observed below 100 °C, however the average D/Pd and H/Pd atomic ratios here achieved, 0.8–0.9, exceed literature provisions; furthermore anomalous metastable absorption (D/Pd ≅ 0.35) was tested in the range 500–200 °C. CR-39 charged-particle detectors after exposure to D-loaded sheets always revealed large number of tracks, whereas no emission was monitored from H-loaded samples: if the tracks have been due to D-D fusion fragments, the estimated average fusion rate is about 10−19 fusionper couple of deuteronsper second. Significant neutron count increase over background matching with D absorption was systematically observed, which fits with an average fusion rate ≅ 10−21 fusionper couple of deuteronsper second; such datum however is made intriguing by a similar n-excess measured during H absorption.

Bi4(SiO4)3 homogeneous thin films were obtained from the reaction of the bismuth oxide coating with the silica glass substrate at temperatures higher than 700C. For heat treatments at temperatures between 600C and 700C, Bi2SiO5 coatings were obtained. The composition and microstructure evolution of the films were determined by Secondary Ion-Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Glancing Angle X-Ray Diffraction (GA-XRD). The synthesis procedure was reproducible and allowed the control of the Bi2O3 phase composition. Moreover, the thin film annealing parameters were correlated with the formation of bismuth silicates, among which Bi4(SiO4)3 (BSO) is very appealing for the production of fast light-output scintillators [2].

ABSTRACT An investigation of cobalt oxide based nanocrystalline thin films by secondary ion mass ... more ABSTRACT An investigation of cobalt oxide based nanocrystalline thin films by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is presented. The coatings, whose composition ranged between CoO and Co3O4, were synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, using cobalt(II) beta -diketonate as precursor. The SIMS analysis revealed a satisfactory precursor conversion into the oxides and allowed distinction of regions in the films at different compositions. Film-substrate intermixing phenomena were evidenced and studied as a function of deposition temperature, film thickness and composition. Copyright (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

It was verified that the brazing process induced little modification in In-containing alloys. On the other hand, Cd evaporation from the alloy was verified after heating, confirming its danger to health under these conditions. The presence of intermetallic clusters was detected, indicating interactions between brazing alloys and 18 carat gold.

Analysis of the transients of the potentiostatic extraction currents revealed the relevant kinetic and diffusion parameters. The kinetic parameter, which is probably related to the transition H(abs) --> H(ads), thus depends on both the history of the Pd sample electrode and the electrolytic environment, whereas the diffusion parameter may depend on the degree of hydrogen loading in the metal.

MBTS interferes only slightly with the electropolymerization process and is incorporated in the coating at concentrations slightly higher than its concentrations in the electrolytic solutions. Accelerated corrosion tests (a.c. impedance) have shown that a 1.5% MBTS content markedly enhances the corrosion resistance properties of coated samples exposed to 3% NaCl solutions. MBTS was also tested as an inhibitor for bare mild steel exposed to NaCl solutions of variable concentration; it was found that the inhibitor acts mainly on the anodic process and that its effectiveness degrades as the NaCl concentration increases.
