Checklists have been widely used in medicine, but rarely applied to dentistry. The purpose of this replication study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a dental radiography checklist intervention for improving the diagnostic value of bitewing images and reducing retake exposures. Methods: Two cohorts of dental hygiene students from programs in the same community college district participated in the mixed methods study; one as intervention group (n=22), the other as control group (n=23). The intervention group used a checklist each time bitewing images were acquired on manikins and live patients while the control group followed the usual protocol for image acquisition. Calibrated faculty evaluated all images and recorded whether images passed, failed, or required retakes. All participants completed a demographic survey at the study conclusion while the experimental group com...

With this in mind, dental education programs continually strive to enhance and deepen these skills by incorporating effective instructional strategies into the curriculum. To do this, predoctoral dental education has used a variety of techniques including problem-based learning, OSCEs, and standardized patient activities. Another technique, while less popular but potentially more effective if done well, is reflective writing. This study aimed to assess the effect of reflective writing on students' critical thinking skills and learning in dental education programs. Two database searches conducted between 2000 and 2019 resulted in 317 articles after the initial screening. Ultimately, 13 articles met inclusion criteria. The following recurring factors were identified for inclusion in dental education reflective writing initiative: reflecti...

The relationship between perceived value of the checklist and willingness to continue its use was examined and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The effect of previous radiography experience, type and number of acquisition errors, and number of retake exposures were analyzed using Fisher's Exact test, chi-square analysis, Spearman's rho, ANOVA, Cronbach's alpha, Breslow-Day, and Pearson correlation coefficient test. Results: Checklist use did not contribute to an improvement in the diagnostic ...
