The Lojeña sheep breed is an endangered Spanish breed, which is raised in the southeast of Granad... more The Lojeña sheep breed is an endangered Spanish breed, which is raised in the southeast of Granada (Andalusia). For the genetic characterization of this breed and to define its genetic profile, 21 microsatellites recommended by the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG) were analyzed. They were amplified by PCR and electrophoresed in an automatic sequencer ABI377XL (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA). Genetic analysis and allelic typing were performed with the Genescan Analysis 3.1.2 and Genotyper 2.5 softwares by using Genescan® 400HD ROX Size Standard. Heterozygosities, F-statistics estimates, genetic distances, multivariate analyses and assignment tests were carried out. All analyzed microsatellites were very informative, except ETH10 (PIC < 0.30). Lojeña sheep breed shows a high variability, with more than 12 alleles per locus; He value was 0,738 and Ho was 0,684. La cuestión de qué razas son dignas o valederas de ser conservadas viene siendo debatida desde qu... more La cuestión de qué razas son dignas o valederas de ser conservadas viene siendo debatida desde que Weitzman planteó su concepto de contribución a la biodiversidad (Weitzman, 1993). La aproximación de Weitzman tenía en cuenta criterios genéticos, económicos, de escala (regional, nacional o global) y era especialmente atractiva porque su cálculo era rigurosamente matemático. En el presente estudio se pretende hacer una aproximación, también matemática, pero con un enfoque algo distinto, utilizando dos métodos: el de Caballero y Toro (2002) y el de Pétit et al. (1998). Para la realización del estudio se han tomado 599 muestras de pelo de las razas Marismeña, PRE, Retuertas, Hispano-Árabe, Mallorquina, Menorquina, Trotador, Pottoka, Asturcón, Losino, Árabe y PSI.
