The breakdown of communism in 1989 seemed, at the time, to be an unquestionable triumph of capita... more The breakdown of communism in 1989 seemed, at the time, to be an unquestionable triumph of capitalism. To assess the accuracy of this perception, in this chapter I review texts from Catholic social teaching, starting with Centessimus Annus (1991). They highlight the ambivalent character of capitalism, with positive aspects, when it risks and invests to generate prosperity and employment; and negative aspects, when it generates an unequal accumulation of wealth. It concludes with an invitation to revalue sobriety as a means for a better redistribution of wealth.
