In classical antiquity, the religious sentiment served as a signal for dancing. The ancient Greeks tried to praise the gods as well as to express their personal sensibility to the Divine through dancing. The dance ritual was essential during the mysteries and it was far from a simple movement of the feet, hands and body. It was an outpouring of mental impulses – a psychic answer to a variety of religious sentiments. Hence, dance served as a means of expressing mental conditions and as a sign of religious faith and devotion through rhythmic movements. In particular, honor and reverence to the gods were expressed with joyful dances, while believers thought that they possessed therapeutic attributes through a sacred mania, lawlessness and extirpation of their inhibitions. The basic principle of the Eleusinian mysteries’ ritual was a circle of initiates...

The present report was concerned with the study of aggressive behaviour and social insecurity among elementary school students in Greece. For this purpose, Petermann and Petermann's (2001; 2003) checklists for structured observation of aggressive behaviour (Checklist of Aggressive Behaviour; CAB) and social insecurity (Checklist of Social Insecure Behaviour; CSIB) were used. The primary aim was to examine the psychometric characteristics of the Greek versions of CAB and CSIB. Overall, 500 Greek elementary school students (M age = 9.46 ± 1.7) participated in the study. Students' social behaviour was evaluated by their teachers. Confirmatory factor analysis results showed adequate factorial structure for both checklists, the χ 2 was significant, and absolute and incremental fit indices were at acceptable levels. Internal consistency coefficients were also at satisfactory and acceptable levels. The analysis of correlation provided evidence on the construct validity of the checklists. No gender differences were found in all aspects of aggressive and socially insecure behaviours. The findings of the study provide initial evidence on the validity and reliability of the checklists and imply that they are valuable instruments for the assessment of aggression and social insecurity in the school context.

However, few programmes have been implemented to investigate how moral development is promoted in PE settings. This study was designed in order to explore the effectiveness of a six-week specially designed moral development intervention in the PE domain in high school students, and to examine whether moral reasoning differs between males and females. The intervention's design was based on the creation of a task-orientated motivation climate and on reciprocal teaching style. The sample (n = 157) was assigned to control (n = 80) and experimental (n = 77) groups. At the beginning and end of the intervention the Moral Judgment Test was applied. The results revealed that the experimental group exhibited statistically greater moral reasoning after the intervention compared to the control group; however, no significant gender differences were found. These findings indicate that an appropriate design of PE could support moral development.

Several demographic characteristics have also been found to influence this relationship. The 2 X 2 achievement goal approach is the newest development in achievement goal approaches suggesting the existence of 4 achievement goals; mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach and performance-avoidance. So far there is no research evidence associating these achievement goals to moral competence and the role of demographic characteristics. The present study was designed to examine the effect of the 2 X 2 achievement goals on moral competence and the moderating role of athletes' age, experience, playing position, level and league of participation, education, job and perceived ability. The sample of the study was comprised of 208 football and basketball athletes (M age = 22.71 years old, SD ± 5.09 years). The participants completed a Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, the Achievement Goal Questionnaire-Sport and the Moral Judgment Test. The results of the moderated hierarchical regression analyses indicated that athletes adopting performance goals were associated with low moral competence. This relationship was moderated by several demographic characteristics such as age and experience, level of participation and perceived ability. Among athletes adopting performance approach goals, less moral competent athletes were found to be the older, the more experienced, and those participating in professional clubs. Among performance avoidance oriented athletes those with high perceived ability revealed less moral competence. No significant effect was found regarding mastery goals. These findings provide important information regarding the effect of achievement goals on moral competence and the role several demographic characteristics can play.

The investigation of moral issues in physical education (PE) has received considerable attention over the last two decades. Moral competence is regarded as one of the fundamental learning goals in contemporary PE curriculum. Aim of Study. The goals of the present study were: a) to determine effects of motivational climate on students' moral competence in conjunction with the school type and student's gender, in everyday life and PE; and b) to examine possible relations among the developmental stages of moral competence in daily life and during PE. Material and Methods. The study sample comprised 428 high school students aged 12 to 15 years. Three questionnaires were administered: a) Moral Judgment Test, b) Moral Judgment Test in Physical Education, c) Students' Perceptions of School/ Classroom Goal Questionnaire. Results. The ANOVA revealed: a) a significant interaction effect of gender and motivational climate together on students' moral competence both in their daily life and during physical education; and b) a significant interaction effect of gender and school type together on students' moral competence in their daily life. No significant effects of motivational climate, gender and school type separately were found. The analysis indicated positive correlations among all six moral stages in daily life and the corresponding moral stages in physical education settings. Conclusions. The results show that the factors of gender and motivational climate, and gender in combination with school type are more significant to moral competence than if considered separately. Another notable finding of this study is a strong relationship between moral stages in daily life and those during physical education. Further research that will consider key factors of moral development and school intervention programs targeting moral competences is needed.
