A dispatching rule is used to select the next job to be processed from a set of jobs awaiting service. A job shop will be treated as dynamic, when conditions such as continuously arriving new jobs and deviations from current schedule need to be accommodated, and a job shop should be treated as an integrated part of a manufacturing system. The discussion includes a simulation technique which uses ARENA 4.0. software to simulate the dynamic model of a job shop under various rules and performance measures. Results of the simulation show that, for most of the performance measures, combined rules perform well. In this study, the combined rules MWKR_FIFO and TWKR_SPT do well under most conditions.

Rural water networks in the developing world are typically branched networks with a single water ... more Rural water networks in the developing world are typically branched networks with a single water source. The main design decision to be made for such networks is the choice of pipe diameters from a discrete set of commercially available pipe diameters. Larger the pipe diameters, better the service (pressure), but higher is the capital cost. In general, each link (connection between two nodes) in the network can consist of several pipe segments of differing diameters. For such networks, existing design tools solve the constrained-optimization problem heuristically [1] [2]. In [3], an ILP formulation is proposed for the special case of one pipe diameter per link. This means that currently one can either get an optimal solution for the special case of one piped segment per link or get a non-optimal solution for the general case of multiple pipe segments per link. In this work, we come up with a model that solves the general formulation while still maintaining optimality. Our model has an LP formulation. It not only manages to optimally solve the general case, it also has a runtime performance that is better than both the heuristic approach to the general problem as well as the optimal approach to the specific problem (one pipe per link). To aid the designers of piped water networks, we have developed an optimization system called JalTantra that implements this model. It also has GIS functionality integrated for ease of providing network details. It is publicly available at http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/jaltantra/ .

During scaffold fabrication, achieving a good level of porosity for enhanced mechanical strength is very challenging. The bone scaffolds should hold both the porosity and load withstanding capacity. In this research, a novel structure was designed with the aim of the evaluation of flexible porosity. A CAD model was generated for the novel structure using specific input parameters, whereas the porosity was controlled by varying the input parameters. Poly Amide (PA 2200) material was used for the fabrication of bone scaffolds, which is a biocompatible material. To fabricate a novel structure for bone scaffolds, a Selective Laser Sintering machine (SLS) was used. The displacement under compression loads was observed using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM). In addition to this, numerical analysis of the components was also carried out. The compressive...

The present research work aims to obtain smooth and stable Poly Lactic Acid (PLA)/Eggshell particles (E) composite filaments with enhanced mechanical and thermal properties for additive manufacturing applications. Composite filaments were developed by varying the ratio of E/PLA to 4-6-8-10-12 weight percentages (wt.%) using a single screw extruder. A study of physical, chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties for the manufactured filaments was made. The extruded filaments were subjected to thermal analysis using Melt Flow Index (MFI) to obtain the optimum value for AM applications. XRD analysis made on 4 wt.% eggshell revealed a higher crystallinity than neat PLA. The thermal results of neat PLA and various weight compositions of E revealed there is a decrease in thermal stability and thermal decomposition due to an increase in filler content. 4 wt.% of E shows the good tensile strength of 49.29 MPa with smooth and stable E/PLA composite filaments during extrusion. The SEM images of the composites revealed the interaction between the filler and the matrix. Based on the experimental work, it is observed that the addition of eggshell powder into the PLA increases the mechanical properties with an optimum content of 4 wt.% of E.

However, achieving a homogenous distribution of the reinforcement particles is very challenging, which directly affect the final mechanical performances. In this research, a detailed investigation was conducted to obtain a superior synthesis of Al-SiC composite materials and to detect the effect of SiC particles distribution on the mechanical characteristic of the stir casted Al matrix composites using glycerol-water based model. The glycerolwater based model study displays the impacts of viscosity of Al melt (1.04-1.24 mPa.s), impeller position (10-50%), stirring speed (100-300 rpm) and blade angle (0-90º) on the vortex height, dispersion time, settling time and clustering of particles. The results of the experiments using glycerol-water based model, 45 º blade angles, impeller position of 40% from the base, stirring speed of 250 rpm showed the best uniform distribution of reinforcement particles. Confirmation experiments were carried out by fabricating Al-SiC PRMMC based on three different viscosities (1.04, 1.13, and 1.24 mPa.s) of Al melt and considering other parameters as constant. Fabricated Al-SiC samples were analysed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and mechanical testing such as tensile, hardness and wear tests. Based on the confirmation results, the viscosity of 1.13 mPa.s for Al melt (at 750 ºC) resulted in uniform distribution of SiC particles, which enhanced the tensile strength by 4%, wear resistance by 21%, and led to a uniform hardness value of 47 VHN throughout the composites.

Research paper thumbnail of Evaluation of Antiproliferative Activity of Red Sorghum Bran Anthocyanin on a Human Breast Cancer Cell Line (MCF-7)

Thus effective treatment of breast cancer with potential antitumour drugs is important. In this paper, human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 has been employed to evaluate the antiproliferative activity of red sorghum bran anthocyanin. The present investigation showed that red sorghum bran anthocyanin induced growth inhibition of MCF-7 cells at significant level. The growth inhibition is dose dependent and irreversible in nature. When MCF-7 cells were treated with red sorghum bran anthocyanins due to activity of anthocyanin morphological changes were observed. The morphological changes were identified through the formation of apoptopic bodies. The fragmentation by these anthocyanins on DNA to oligonuleosomal-sized fragments, is a characteristic of apoptosis, and it was observed as concentration-dependent. Thus, this paper clearly demonstrates that human breast cancer cell MCF-7 ...

Red sorghum bran is known as a rich source for anthocyanins. The anthocyanin contents extracted from red sorghum bran were evaluated by biochemical analysis. Among the three solvent system used, the acidified methanol extract showed a highest anthocyanin content (4.7 mg/g of sorghum bran) followed by methanol (1.95 mg/g) and acetone (1 mg/g). Similarly, the highest total flavonoids (143 mg/g) and total phenolic contents (0.93 mg/g) were obtained in acidified methanol extracts than methanol and acetone extracts. To study the health benefits of anthocyanin from red sorghum bran, the total antioxidant activity was evaluated by biochemical and molecular methods. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in acidified methanol extracts of anthocyanin in dose-dependent manner. The antioxidant activity of the red sorghum bran was directly related to the total anthocyanin ...
