On clinical review her prosthetic eye (left eye) was tilting upwards, along with worsening of Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) in the only seeing eye. As she refused IV glucocorticoids, she was offered rituximab which only caused a transient improvement in the clinical activity score of the eye. She had persistent right upper lid retraction of 6 mm, associated with lagophthalmos. To protect her seeing eye from corneal ulceration, the patient received a botulinum toxin injection to the right upper eyelid to induce blepharoptosis as an interim measure prior to right upper eyelid blepharotomy in April 2021. This patient remains biochemically euthyroid on block and replace therapy and her TRAb level is falling over time. Treatment for active GO is ongoing and the patient required a redo blepharotomy for painful corneal exposure in...

Here, we describe our investigation of the lineages and host-specific mutations identified in a particularly vulnerable population of predominantly older and immunosuppressed SARS-CoV-2-infected patients seen at our medical center in Chicago during the transition from the Delta to Omicron wave. We compare two primer schemes, ArticV4.1 and VarSkip2, used for short read amplicon sequencing, and describe our strategy for bioinformatics analysis that facilitates identifying lineage-associated mutations and host-specific mutations that arise during infection. This study illustrates the ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 VOCs in our community and documents novel constellations of mutations that arise in individual patients. The ongoing evaluation of the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 during this pandemic is important for informing our public health strategies.

However, these insecticides have a suppressive and negative impact on non-targeted beneficial fauna. The efficiency and mode of action of numerous insecticides are also much diverse. Therefore, we studied the sublethal impact of bifenthrin (pyrethroids) and clothianidin (neonicotinoids) on ladybird beetle Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), taking these insecticides as the model representative for the insecticide groups. Our results revealed that both insecticides enhanced the life length of male and female adults of ladybird beetle as compared to control treatment. Bifenthrin reduced the survival rate of larvae and adults as compared to clothianidin and control as well as lowered the fecundity rate of C. septempunctata. After control treatment, the developmental period of each larval instar was shorter in clothianidin than bifenthrin. Adult emergence was also less in clothianidin than in the control group. However, clothianidin triggered the fecundity of the female ladybird beetle. Higher fecundity was recorded in clothianidin treatment as compared to bifenthrin and control which means clothianidin is a better option in integrated pest management (IPM) program as compared to bifenthrin involving the ladybird beetle as a natural biocontrol agent.

Programmed cell death (PCD) refers to the death of a cell that is genetically programmed. Alongsi... more Programmed cell death (PCD) refers to the death of a cell that is genetically programmed. Alongside cell division and cell migration, PCD enables the organism to strictly control cell numbers and tissue size as well as to protect itself from unwanted cells that threaten homeostasis. To counteract the oxidative damage, plants have evolved efficient antioxidant defense mechanisms containing enzymatic and non-enzymatic reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavengers. The function of ROS also as the messenger molecules interact with several other signaling pathways including nitric oxide (NO), salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), and ethylene (ET). These interactions and ROS/hormonal balance determine whether the cell stays alive or enter the PCD pathway. Reactive oxygen species are also responsible for the transduction of stress signals and systemic acclimation to unfavorable environmental conditions. Although PCD causes crop yield losses, such selective death of cells under abiotic stres...

The proposed prototype consists of the two-port MIMO configuration of the mid-band antenna placed at the top and bottom of the substrate, while the 4-port mmWave MIMO antenna is placed sideways. The MIMO configuration at the top and bottom consists of a two-element array to achieve high gain at the mid-band spectrum, while the antennas placed sideways are optimized to cover the 5G-mmWave band spectrum. The overall dimensions of the board were selected the same as the of smartphones, i.e., 151 mm × 72 mm. The mid-band antenna has an operational bandwidth of 2.73 GHz, whereas the mmWave antenna has an impedance bandwidth of 3.85 GHz with a peak gain of 5.29 and 8.57 dBi, respectively. Furthermore, the design is analyzed for the various MIMO performance parameters; it was found that the proposed antennas offer...

Research paper thumbnail of Hydrogen as fuel carrier in PEM fuelcell for automobile applications

IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering, 2015

To market a hydrogen-fuel cell vehicle as competitively as the present internal combustion engine vehicles, there is a need for materials that can store a minimum of 6.5wt% of hydrogen. Carbon materials are being heavily investigated because of their promise to offer an economical solution to the challenge of safe storage of large hydrogen quantities. Hydrogen is important as a new source of energy for automotive applications. It is clear that the key challenge in developing this technology is hydrogen storage. Combustion of fossil fuels and their overuse is at present a serious concern as it is creates severe air pollution and global environmental problems; like global warming, acid rains, ozone depletion in stratosphere etc. This necessitated the search for possible alternative sources of energy. Though there are a number of primary energy sources available, such as thermonuclear energy, solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy etc, in contrast to the fossil fuels in most cases, these new primary energy sources cannot be used directly and thus they must be converted into fuels, that is to say, a new energy carrier is needed. Hydrogen fuel cells are two to three times more efficient than combustion engines. As they become more widely available, they will reduce dependence on fossil fuels. In a fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen are combined in an electrochemical reaction that produces electricity and, as a byproduct, water.
