The proposed approach is motivated by the fact that Maximum Margin-based classification defines decision functions as a linear combination of the selected training data and, thus, the variations on training sample selection directly affect generalization performance. We show that the exploitation of the proposed regularization scheme is well motivated and intuitive. Experimental results show that the proposed regularization scheme outperforms standard SVM in human action recognition tasks as well as classical recognition problems.

In this paper, active prosthesis with four degrees of freedom has been investigated, which can be used to fit a limb with amputation below elbow. The system comprises of multichannel inputs which correspond to the flexion and extension as well as supination and pronation. To find maximum surface neural activity, accurate placement of electrodes has been carried out on 10 subjects aged between 22-30 years. Signals (0-500 hertz) acquired from contracting voluntary muscles with minimum cross talk and common mode noise. Clean filtered EMG signal is then amplified precisely. Finally digitization is being done to drive bionic hand. Practical demonstration on a simple DC motor proved providential using this method for the two motions of an actual human arm. EMG Signals emanating from muscles dedicated to individual fingers have been recorded. Moreover modern classifiers; KNN and NN have been investigated carefully with selected features through different time and noise levels.

Towards this goal, we investigate a multi-modal subspace learning algorithm together with the Dropout regularizer. Inspired by the regularization for neural networks, we propose to aritificially remove the effect of certain amount of feature bins using the probabilistic approach to prevent the linear subspace learning from over-fitting. The novel regularizer is well integrated into the multi-modal learning algorithm which maximizes the between-class scatter while minimizing the within-class scatter in the projected latent space. The new objective function can be solved efficiently as the generalized eigenvalue problem. Experimental results have shown that superior performance can be obtained in both face-sketch recognition and cross-modal retrieval applications.

While there have been several approaches for face detection, none performs detection in such low resolution and segmentation with pixel accuracy. In this paper, we propose convolutional segmentation networks (CSNs) that can be trained to learn segmentation of human faces. Unlike the deep classifiers such as Convolutional Neural Network (CNNs), CSNs have the unique design solely for segmentation with minimal complexity. Furthermore, we propose a self-data organization (SDO) in order to create “expert” CSNs each of which is specialized over a set of images with certain face characteristics. SDO is integrated with CSN training in an interleaved manner and it is the key for the learning with simple and compact networks rather than the deep ones. This is especially a desired property for the limited face datasets with challenging face variations and complexities. Evaluations on the benchmark dataset show that CSNs can achieve an elegant segmentation accuracy despite the limited training data size, thumbnail resolution and highly complex face modalities.

The core of our system is formed by a text processing module combined with a module performing PCA-assisted perceptron regression with random sub-space selection (P2R2S2). P2R2S2 uses Over-Feat features as a starting point and transforms them into more descriptive features via unsupervised training. The relevance score for each query-image pair is obtained by comparing the transformed features of the query image and the relevant training images. We also use a face bank, duplicate image detection, and optical character recognition to boost our evaluation accuracy. Our system achieves 0.5099 in terms of DCG25 on the development set and 0.5116 on the test set.
