First, an approach that emphasizes the object as a product of thought. Second, the approach by looking at Islamic ideas, values, and principles through religious sources and not speaking within the framework of objects. In the second approach, the values and principles of Islam expressed through the composition of forms and spaces in buildings. This study aims to find patterns and variations in the implementation of Islamic values and principles in the exterior and interior of buildings, especially mosque building. Case studies are several Wali mosques in Indonesia. Data obtained from physical observations, interviews, and visual documentation. The analysis conducted with an interpretive method that describes the physical characteristics and meanings of some study objects in-depth. This paper can conclude that Islamic expressions those related to the value of transcendence or the remembrance of monotheism can be found in Wali mosque and mausoleum. The results of this study are expected to be used as input for further studies on the search for 'forms' in Islamic design and architecture, especially the form of mosques in Indonesia.

The problem occurs when the tidal flooding has almost completely engulfed human activities for instance in human settlements. Tidal flooding has a negative impact on physical, social, economic, and environmental conditions, as an example the coastal settlement in Tanjung Mas Village. Tidal flood, in addition, can cause damage on infrastructure and housing areas, also, it has an impact to the live of communities, households, and individuals simultaneously. This research aims to examine on how to determine the vulnerability of community settlements to the danger of tidal flooding and how to build the adaptation efforts among the community to deal with tidal flooding disaster in order to keep the buildings and public facilities in safety. This research uses interview and observation methods, then, by using qualitative descriptive techniques to gain result underlined in the object research. The result shows that Kampong Tambak Lorok can be divided into 3 zones at high, medium and low. This zoning concept is obtained from flood vulnerability assessment related to the high of tidal flood, inundation duration and its impact. The first zone is represented by a high tidal flood with an average threat duration of inundation ranging from 3 to 5 hours. The depth of the tidal flooding can reach around 70-80 cm from the floor in a house. The second zone is represented by a medium tidal flooding with an average threat duration of inundation ranging from 3 to 4 hours. The depth of the Tidal Flood can reach around 50-60 cm from the floor. The third zone is a low tidal flooding with an average threat of inundation ranging from 0 to 1 hour. The problem of settlements on monetary and non-monetary factors lies in the economic capacity of the community which is classified as very low, affecting the value of expenditure for settlement needs. This has an impact on the response of the community in dealing with tidal flooding. Adaptation to settlements by elevating the level of floor in the house, changing the position of electricity, elevating the height of the house, making dykes on the front of the house and suctioning the flood by pump.

So does among the modern and traditional people. This research aims at understanding the meaning of space in the residence of Java Tondano People in Minahasa. To achieve this objective, three important elements of residence must be considered, which are; setting, activities, and values. Bottom up approach is taken to reveal the meaning. The method of data collection and analysis are through triangulation of literature review, field observation, and interview. Case study implemented on the residences that Jaton People built within the period of 1900-1950, which historically show the characteristics of Minahasa traditional house. The result of the analysis suggests that the space in the house of Java Tondano people is not only a place to have a family, but also an integrated part of the Java Tondano people to preserve the value of community, to build relation and to maintain the harmony with the surrounding community. Such meaning of space is motivated by the value of appropriateness, tradition, and goodwill.

There are several standards or references used in dormitories but currently only found for campus dormitories. In addition, there are some problems in pesantren dormitory such as infrastructure that is less supportive and very high occupancy density, therefore students make adaptations. This study aims to formulate the parameters used in designing pesantren based on preferences and adaptation. Preference is included because there is relationship between preference and adaptation. The method used is qualitative by comparing from some literatures. The results consist of thread of thought, determining of pesantren and variable, indicator used. There are five thread that used to formulated design concept, among others existing, typology, preference, adaptation and proposal design. Variable and indicators of activity, facil...

This is because Indonesian people are used to livinge in horizontal housing, one of them being the kampung. The kampung alley provides for various forms of dynamic activity and social interaction for resident, and make it to be a good social space. Related to this fact, architects have the task of designing flats corridors that could accomodate residents' needs for social space such as the user's behaviour setting in a kampung street. This issue is in line with the case study in Sombo Flat's corridor which was designed based on the characteristics of a kampung street's behaviour setting concept. With that concept, flats corridors were designed very wide, approximately 3-9 meters. This wide corridor give residents the opportunity for social interaction and other dynamic activities that take place in the corridors. This paper aims to evaluate the design implementation of the Sombo Flat's corridors using analysis on behaviour setting method, which covers the pattern of the activities, setting/milieu, synormophy (the relationship between activity and the setting), and also analysing space usage patterns that occur in the corridors. The data are collected through observation, interview, documentation and analyze with descriptive qualitative methods. The results of the research show that Sombo Flat's corridor, designed based on the characteristics of a kampung street concept, can accomodate the resident's pattern of activities well, especially in the function of social space to create a sense of neighborhood. However, the negative impact from this wide corridor design is that it gives residents an opportunity to appropriate their personal space in the corridor which supposedly is a public space (thereby changing the spatial usage).

Slums can also occur because residents are unable to meet basic housing basic needs. This phenomenon also occurs in Krajan Pasar Kampung-Krian which is located around the center of the area. However, slums have potential for their inhabitants from the social and economic side. The importance of handling slums in the context of sustainable development has become a global issue. This research aims to determine the strategies of inclusive development in slum upgrading on public facilities and application of inclusive development principles. This research is a descriptive case study, used a mixed methods approach, and uses SWOT analysis. Based on the research results, it is known that the concept of inclusive development consists of; improving the quality and provision of public facilities; increasing performance of accessibility, affordability, resilience, and sustainability; and cooperate with the of Krian's Market manager in slum upgrading.

The Pesantren's buildings are commonly not well designed and its design represents the institution's requirements. This paper investigates the bedroom design of dormitory based on student's preferences and adaptation, which then will be used as a design's concept reference. Bedroom is the smallest scale of built environment, yet it has great influence on accommodating users' daily needs. Moreover, the bedroom dimension especially for a pesantren's dormitory has limited area but with high occupant density. This study uses a case study strategy supported by quantitative and qualitative methods. Six Pesantrens are chosen to find bedrooms' typology by observation. Next, the typology is tested to 500 respondents in Sunan Drajat Pesantren by using a questionnaire. Quantitative analysis is employed to find the students' preferences, and afterwards the student's adaptation is investigated. The result shows that the bedrooms' typology in pesantren's dormitory do not meet the minimum standard of bedroom's design. The typology is based on observation in six Pesantren's bedrooms. The study also reveals that student's preference for bedroom's dormitory is influenced by physiological and psychological aspects. Physiological aspects indicate thermal and visual comfort. The psychological aspects are motivation, security, privacy, personal space, territory, crowding and density. The bedroom size, number of occupants and bedroom area per person do not meet students' preference, consequently the adaptation process is difficult. The types of adaptation are by reaction, by adjustment and by withdrawal. The design concepts propose from the bedroom's dimension (bedroom area per person is 2.8 m²), the students' belonging and furniture arrangement, use space, number of occupants (small, small-medium, medium, large, and extra-large bedroom).

Virtual reality not only promotes possibilities to explore architectural forms but also affords capability to learn the interaction of users and the design object as if they do in the real situation. User reaction toward design model can be learned and used to be effective information to develop a promoted preliminary design. The user satisfaction and suitability are indicated by their feedback of design object in virtual reality simulation. This paper aims to explain the application of the method on hospital building design. In this case the authors found that the method is very accurate to capture the user need and very valuable to support design process.

Over time, the area of religious tourism is increasingly and well managed, which can be viewed in terms of area functions as a commercial area cum residential Kampung. Thus, in indirect way, tourism brings a significant impact on this region. Residents of this Kampung mostly work as merchands and open businesses in the area (residential), enabling them to expand their own business further. This change as a form of adaptation to adjust their needs. Some buildings (residential) are converted to warehouse and shops or else being reformed into a modern building, thus diminish the original character of this area. This is a qualitative study which is focussed on the social condition of the residents. The researcher uses indepth interview and observation methods. Related variables in this research is nonphysical variables, include historical aspects, culture, and socioeconomic , whereas physical variables include settlement patterns, land use, hierarchy of space and facade. Data analysis technique used is FGD which netting opinion technique to explore public opinion and data reduction. The results of this research is to generate criteria over tourism kampung development which combines historical, cultural (ethnical) and socioeconomic (non-physical) and physical development of the Kampung Arab so that it can be sustainable tourism kampung in Surabaya which can reflect the image of the region.
