Sediment Simulation in Intakes with Multi Block Options (SSIIM) CFD model was used to simulate the sediment and flow behavior in the sand trap. Numerical simulation results demonstrated that the horizontal and vertical component of velocities at any region of settling basin was less than the designed critical flow velocity of the sand trap. The design with respect to dimensions and proportioning of the sand trap were found appropriate for inducing low flow velocities throughout the settling basin of the sand trap supporting the deposition of sediments. The results obtained from simulation further presented the 100% removal of the desired sediments (particle size class ≥ 0.205 mm diameter) could be achieved in the sand trap. All this verify the design of sand trap is in accordance with the desired designed sediment removal efficiency of...

Stock prices are significantly influenced by operating performance of a company in efficiently utilizing its assets. For that matter, operating efficiency (as measured by total asset turnover ratio) plays a role in portfolio investment decisions. Pedroni’s heterogeneous panel co-integration procedures, associated bivariate error-correction model (ECM), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and generalized method of moments (GMM) are applied. Both stock returns and total asset turnover ratios in levels are nonstationary with I (1) behavior. Subsequently, both variables are found cointegrated. The panel ECM estimates suggest convergence of variables toward long-run equilibrium at moderate pace with short-run interactive positive feedback effects. Again, both DOLS and GMM estimates reveal short-run contemporaneo...

It is commonly known as nonpathogen in the human body. Endocarditis due to Lactobacillus is rarely encountered and associated with impaired immunity. Splenic abscess is also an uncommon infection that classically results from endocarditis or another source of hematogenous seeding. Here, we present the case of bioprosthetic aortic valve endocarditis and associated splenic abscess caused by Lactobacillus acidophilus. The source of the Lactobacillus bacteremia should be investigated because of the risk of life-threatening conditions. Most of the time, identifying Lactobacillus species is challenging and can cause a delay in diagnosis and timely treatment. Especially in patients who have significant underlying clinical conditions, physicians should consider Lactobacillus species as a causative microorganism.

Elevated CTCF levels in breast cancer cells are known to contribute to tumorigenesis; however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. We investigated the effect of CTCF expression on breast cancer cell survival and elucidated its mechanism. CTCF depletion in MCF-7 cells led to a decreased cell growth and proliferation, surpassing the growth of normal cells under co-culture system of MCF-7-GFP and MCF10A. Here we propose that the phenotypes observed in CTCF-depleted MCF-7 cancer cells, such as reduced cell proliferation, increased apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest, are closely linked with the activation of p53. The consensus CTCF-binding site, located approximately 800 bp upstream of the first exon of TP53, was marked by H3K27me3, but not by the active mark H3K4me3, although CTCF is expressed. Knockdown of CTCF conversely led to the recruitment of H3K4me3 instead of H3K27me3, accompanying with the higher enrichment of PolII in the proximal promoter region of TP53. With the activation of p53, increased p21 and Bax expressions were observed in CTCF knockdown MCF-7 cells. Elucidating functional roles of CTCF and regulation mechanisms may help to guide CTCF and/or its related molecules as a therapeutic target to prevent cancer cell growth.

We establish an explicit and general decay rate result, using some properties of convex functions. Our result is obtained without imposing any restrictive growth assumption on the frictional damping term.

Computing researchers have long focused on improving energy-efficiency?the amount of computation ... more Computing researchers have long focused on improving energy-efficiency?the amount of computation per joule? under the implicit assumption that all energy is created equal. Energy however is not created equal: its cost and carbon footprint fluctuates over time due to a variety of factors. These fluctuations are expected to intensify as renewable penetration increases. Thus in my work I introduce energy-agility a design concept for a platform?s ability to rapidly and efficiently adapt to such power fluctuations. I then introduce a representative application to assess energy-agility for the type of long-running, parallel, data-intensive tasks that are both common in data centers and most amenable to delays from variations in available power. Multiple variants of the application are implemented to illustrate the fundamental tradeoffs in designing energy-agile parallel applications. I find that with inactive power state transition latencies of up to 15 seconds, a design that regularly "blinks" servers outperforms one that minimizes transitions by only changing power states when power iii varies. While the latter approach has much lower transition overhead, it requires additional I/O, since servers are not always concurrently active. Unfortunately, I find that most server-class platforms today are not energy-agile: they have transition latencies beyond one minute, forcing them to minimize transition and incur additional I/O. iv

Cointegration techniques and Granger causality test based on the block exogeneity (Wald test) has been applied for the analysis. The cointegration test confirmed the long run association among the inflation, credit to private sector, deposits, foreign direct investment, domestic savings and economic growth. The present study supports the “supply-leading” hypothesis in Pakistan economy. Granger causality test results show that there is bidirectional causality between inflation and growth, deposits and growth, and savings and growth. Furthermore, unidirectional causality is running from foreign direct investment to growth. The coefficient of the error correction has the correct sign and is statistically significant. The study also draws some conclusion and suggests some policy implications for the establishment of robust financial sector and setting up a strong growth trajectory of the economy.
