Ergonomic is an important element in designing and creating ceramic product of Labu Sayong and Te... more Ergonomic is an important element in designing and creating ceramic product of Labu Sayong and Tembikar Sarawak pottery. The use of existing hand tools had caused musculoskeletal discomfort and small injury which resulted to musculoskeletal disorders to the workers. These hand tools are designed based on natural materials such as stone and wood, as well as being adapted from wood works or metal work which is not suitable for use in ceramic industry. This study explored these comparisons and identified the ergonomic aspect of these existing hand tools. Other aspects of design characteristic, popularity tools and level of difficulties in designing process were also identified. This study employs correlation statistics based on Pearson model and Verbal Protocol Analysis (VPA) towards the carving tools and ergonomic ribs which were used in the making process of Labu Sayong and Tembikar Sarawak pottery. The results indicated that similarity exists in hand movement pattern of using these hand tools between both types of potteries. This study concludes and proposed to redesign these tools in order to increase the ergonomic aspect of Labu Sayong and Tembikar Sarawak making industry.

Malaysia is the biggest crude palm oil exporter to the world market for the last 16 years. Howeve... more Malaysia is the biggest crude palm oil exporter to the world market for the last 16 years. However this achievement is still overshadowed by the harvesting method which is conventional and labour intensive. An attempt to use mechanisation into the harvesting system, in particular the cutting process of tall palm trees, has been unsuccessful. At the beginning of the oil palm's fruit bearing life, i.e. 3 to 4 years of age, fruit bunches are still accessible. For these palms, a chisel is used to cut the fruit bunches. Growth is such 8-10 years, the trees have already reached substantial height. In these cases a sickle mountedon flexible telescopic aluminum tube (pole) is used. This, however, exposes plantation worker to the risk of musculoskeletal discomfort and injury. This paper examines the problems by assessing the task posture and tool, and their implications for operators, using questionnaire survey and videotape analysis techniques, The result prevails that there is evidence to associate the problems of musculoskeletal disorders among the operators.

Ergonomik memainkan peranan yang penting dalam rekabentuk kerusi sekolah. Postur duduk yang jangg... more Ergonomik memainkan peranan yang penting dalam rekabentuk kerusi sekolah. Postur duduk yang janggal akibat daripada rekabentuk perabot kerusi yang tidak sesuai mampu menyumbang ke arah kesan yang negatif kepada kesihatan kanak-kanak. Isu ini dapat dilihat melalui penyelidikan yang mempersoalkan tentang ukuran perabot kerusi yang terdapat di sekolah adalah sesuai digunakan oleh Murid Sekolah Rendah Tahap Satu (MSRTS). Ketidaksepadanan antropometrik dan ukuran kerusi menyumbang kea rah postur duduk yang janggal di kalangan kanak-kanak. Postur duduk mengakibat ketegangan dan kekebasan pada sendi serta otot semasa duduk. Oleh itu, kanak-kanak yang terus menggunakan kerusi yang tidak sesuai dengan ukuran antropometrik akan memberi kesan yang tidak sihat pada kesihatan tubuh ( Gouvali & Boudolous 2006 ; Lipardo et al. 2006) dan mengakibatkan kesan sakit belakang ( Lueder & Rice 2008). Seramai 108 orang responden telah terlibat di dalam penyelidikan ini yang terdiri daripada MSRTS yang berumur di 7, 8 dan 9 tahun. Respondan telah diperolehi daripada 12 nbuah Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan yang terletak di sekitar Perlis, Kedah dan Pulau Pinang. Penyelidikan ini menggabungkan kaedah kajian kuantitatif dan kualitatif bagi mengenalpasti ketidak-sepadanan antara antropometri respondan dengan ukuran perabot kerusi yang digunakan di sekolah. Antropometer, goniometer dan penimbang berat badan adalah antara alat yang digunakan bagi mendapat data antropometri responden. Ukuran kerusi diambil dari setiap sekolah direkodkan. Seterusnya, data antropometri dan ukuran kerusi telah dianalisa menggunakan perisian SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). Postur duduk responden turut dirakam ketika menjalani sesi pembelajaran di dalam kelas. Pemerhatian secara langsung ini dianalisa dan digunakan bagi menyokong data SPSS yang telah diperolehi. Hasil daripada menyelidikan ini, dapatlah dirumuskan bahawa ukuran antropometri MSRTS adalah tidak sepadan dengan ukuran kerusi yang digunakan di sekolah. Ini secara tidak langsung, menunjukkan bahawa pertimbangan terhadap faktor ergonomikk di dalam rekabentuk kerusi sekolah adalah perlu bagi memenuhi keperluan kesihatan dan keselesaan MSRTS di sekolah.
