The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of alpha-tocopherol on distraction osteogen... more The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of alpha-tocopherol on distraction osteogenesis. Materials and methods Right tibias of 30 New Zealand white rabbits were distracted at a rate of 0.5 mm/day for 20 days with a circular external fixator. Experimental group rabbits (n = 15) were administered i.m. 20 mg/kg/ day alpha-tocopherol for 30 days. Radiographic examinations were performed at the 20th, 30th and 40th days. Bone scintigraphy was performed at the 5th and 20th days. Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was measured at the 5th and 30th days. All animals were sacrificed and the right tibias of all animals were harvested for histopathologic examination at the 40th day. Results Radiologic scores were statistically similar at the 20th day. However, the experimental group demonstrated higher radiologic scores at the 30th and 40th days. A scintigraphic baseline study at the 5th day of the study showed statistically similar osteoblastic activities in both groups. However, at the 20th day, osteoblastic activity was significantly higher in the experimental group. Serum TAC values were also significantly higher in the experimental group at the 30th day. At necropsy, histopathologic examination revealed statistically significantly higher scores in the experimental group. Conclusion The results of this study show that alphatocopherol has beneficial effects on new bone formation during distraction osteogenesis. Trikuetrum ile ulnanın distal ucu arasında triangüler fibröz kıkırdak kompleks (TFKK) bulunmaktadır. Pisiform ise palmar tarafta trikuetrumun üzerine oturmuş durumdadır ve eminensia mediyalis adı verilen, el bileğinin palmar yüzünün iç tarafında görülen kabartıyı oluşturur. El bileği kemiklerinin distal sırası, radyalden ulnara olmak üzere, trapezium, trapezoideum, kapitatum ve hamatumdur. Bu kemiklerin distal yüzleri metakarpal kemikler ile eklem yapar. [3] El bileğinin bağları yoğun bir yapı oluşturmakta ve eklem kapsülünü güçlendirmektedir. Yerleşim ve yapılanma itibariyle el bileğinde dört bağ grubu ayırt edilmektedir. Bu bağ grupları; ön kol ile karpal kemikler arasındaki bağlar, karpal kemikler arasındaki bağlar, karpal kemikler ile metakarpal kemikler arasındaki bağlar ve metakarpal kemiklerin basisleri arasındaki bağlar olarak sınıflandırılır. [4] A kut karpal kırıklı-çıkıklar nadir görülen yaralanmalardır. [1] Bu yaralanmalarda uygulanacak yetersiz tedaviler, ilerleyici artrit nedeniyle el bileği ağrısı ve fonksiyon bozukluğuna yol açabilir. İyileşme için doğru tanı ve erken müdahale gereklidir. [2] ANATOMİ El bileği iskeleti (karpal kemikler), proksimal ve distal olmak üzere iki sıra üzerine dizilmiş sekiz kemikten meydana gelir. Proksimal sırada radyalden ulnara, skafoid, lunatum, trikuetrum ve pisiform kemikleri bulunmaktadır. Bunlardan skafoid, lunatum ve trikuetrum, aralarındaki eklemler aracılığıyla birleşerek konveksliği proksimale bakan elips şeklinde bir eklem yüzü meydana getirir (bu bölge, direkt posteroanterior [PA] grafide Gilula çizgisi olarak tanımlanır).
