The system consists of a motor attached with a beam at the center and a ball, which is placed on the top of beam. The problem with this system, is in the time of an electrical control signal is applied to the motor, the beam can be tilted about its horizontal axis and the ball will roll on the top of the beam. Therefore, if the system cannot be controlled properly, the ball may fall down from the beam. In this paper, PID controller Algorithm based on Arduino microcontroller which depends on the feedback signal is used to control the ball position using linear potentiometer position sensor. MATLAB software program has been used to plot the system response by observing the ball position for a predefined amount of time. The controller parameters have been tuned using trial and error method, tested for different set point tracking and for disturbance rejection in order to obtain a good system characteristic.

Automatic control is vast technological area whose central aim is to develop control strategies that improve performance when they applied to a system. the distinct characteristic of automatic control is that it reduces the human operator. One such gadget is the fan. The fans are generally available with speed control, depending on the requirement the speed is set. Usually, when the temperature is high the fan set at high speed and at lower temperatures the fan is operated with lower speed. This is done manually using human. In this paper, an automatic control solution is suggested to control the fan speed. A circuit with LM35DZ temperature sensor, PIC16F877A microcontroller, brush less DC motor and few of electronic components is designed and implemented to control the fan speed automatically. As an additional feature LCD is used to present the temperature and the fan speed. Finally, the designed system circuit is tested in many times and performed very well.

This paper introduces the approach of modeling and control of liquid level control system for a Coupled-Tank System. First, this paper shows mathematical equations for the nonlinear system. Then it presents the linearized model for the proposed system. Two controllers of the system based on the conventional Proportional plus Integral (PI) controller and Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) technique are used, to control the level of the second tank for the linearized model, through variable manipulation of water pump in the first tank. Finally, the simulation study is done, which demonstrates that the MRAC controller produces better response compared to the PI controller. 

The multivariable system consists of many manipulated and controlled variables and thereby it is very difficult in controller design because of changes in process dynamics and interactions between process variables. A quantitative approach such as relative gain array is used in the analysis of the interactions between manipulated and controlled variables, and thus provides a best pairing to generate a control scheme. In this paper, the coupled tank control system has two inputs, which are the inlet flow rate to the tanks and two outputs, which are the liquid level height inside the tanks. PID controller has been commonly used in industrial automation. PID controllers are designed and simulated for the best loop pairings of manipulated and controlled variables. This paper presents the liquid level control of the nonlinear-coupled tank system using sliding mode control technique. At first, a static sliding mode control technique is proposed to control level height of the second tank. According to the chattering problem that happened with static sliding mode control, integral sliding mode controller is suggested to reduce the chattering problem, as well as guarantee the asymptotic stability of the feedback system. The closed loop system is simulated using MATLAB Simulink to demonstrate the characteristic performance of the developed control approaches. Therefore, the simulation results indicate that the proposed control schemes work very well. While, the integral sliding mode control has a better performance for the rejection of disturbance, as well as the system’s parameters variation.

We evaluated the association of educational attainment (> or =12 years or <12 years) with the incidence of fatal strokes, ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and myocardial infarction in a cohort of 21,443 United States adults who participated in either the First National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES-I) Epidemiologic Follow-up Study (NHEFS) or the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Mortality Follow-up Study (NHANES-II). Cox proportional hazards analyses were used to examine the relationships. During a mean follow-up period of 15.2+/-4.6 years, the risk for all fatal strokes was increased in persons who reported less than 12 years of education. The increased risk was more prominent in persons aged 50 years or less (relative risk [RR], 2.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-6.0) compared wi...

Summary of Report-Seven patients (average age 60, range 46 to 73 years) developed fatal intracerebral hemorrhages associated with neurointerventional procedures and the use of intravenous abciximab. The procedures included angioplasty and stent placement in the cervical internal carotid artery (nϭ4), angioplasty of the intracranial internal carotid artery (nϭ1), and angioplasty of the middle cerebral artery (nϭ2). Clinical deterioration was observed within 1 hour of the procedure in 5 patients and 7 and 8 hours after the procedure, respectively, in the remaining 2 patients. All patients had received heparin and clopidogrel; 6 had also received aspirin. Conclusions-Intracerebral hemorrhages can occur after neurointerventional procedures in patients with recent cerebral ischemic events, particularly when aggressive antithrombotic treatment is used.

The effects of hypernatremia and hyponatremia on the risk of symptomatic vasospasm and on 3-month outcomes were analyzed after adjustment for the following potential confounding factors: age, sex, preexisting hypertension, admission Glasgow Coma Scale score, initial mean arterial pressure, subarachnoid clot thickness, intraventricular blood or intraparenchymal hematoma, ventricular dilation, and aneurysm size and location. Of 298 patients in the analysis, 58 (19%) developed hypernatremia and 88 (30%) developed hyponatremia. Hyponatremia was not associated with 3-month outcomes (odds ratio, 1.9; 95% confidence interval, 0.9-4.3). Neither hypernatremia nor hyponatremia was associated with the risk of symptomatic vasospasm. Hyponatremia seems to be more common than hypernatremia after SAH. However, hypernatremia after SAH is independently associated with poor outcomes, and this association is independent of previously identified outcome predictors, including age and admission Glasgow Coma Scale scores. Further studies are needed to define the underlying mechanism of this association.

Methods: A point-prevalence survey of staphylococci isolated from the nares of 50 VAMC patients in 2003 showed the incidence of mupirocin resistance in S. aureus was rare (3%) but resistance was relatively high (39%) in S. epidermidis. At the nearby community hospital (CH), mupirocin was use...

Research paper thumbnail of Prognostic Significance of Hypernatremia and Hyponatremia among Patients with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

We performed this study to determine the prognostic significance of serum sodium concentration abnormalities. We analyzed prospectively collected data for the placebo treatment group in a clinical trial conducted at 54 neurosurgical centers in North America. Hypernatremia was significantly associated with poor outcomes (odds ratio, 2.7; 95% confidence interval, 1.2-6.1). A positive correlation was observed between the highest sodium values recorded and Glasgow Outcome Scale scores at 3 months (P &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt; 0.0001 by analysis of variance).
