Much of Ober's work is concerned with the origins and development of democracy, which he explored by focusing on various aspects of the sociopolitical and cultural contexts in ancient Athens and beyond, such as military tactics (Ober, 1985), social cohesion (Ober, 1989, 2005), the formation of knowledge (Ober, 2008), and political theory and practice (Ober, 1996, 1998). Almost twenty years after the disintegration of the USSR and collapse of communist regimes in Eas... more Almost twenty years after the disintegration of the USSR and collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe, Lithuania, one of the Baltic States and a former member state of the Soviet Union is a democratic republic with the political system designed and based on the principles of a parliamentary democracy. In 1991 after the wave of “velvet revolutions” swept over the countries of Eastern and Central Europe Lithuania once again became a sovereign nation after fifty years of Soviet occupation. Nevertheless, eighteen years later a peculiar parallel exists between the past attempts of the former Communist Party to falsify and distort history of the previously independent state and today’s attempts of Lithuania’s political leaders to obscure the country’s history of the Soviet period.
