THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT FOUNDATION ROCKS ON THE STABILITY OF GRAVITY DAM USING FINITE ELEMENT METHOD , 2018

This led to investigating the effect of different types of rocks on the stability of the gravity dam. The stability of a gravity dam varies with the type of foundation rock on which it is
constructed upon. In this project, a 2-D stability check was done on the dam section chosen. Also, the finite element analysis software ANSYS18.1 was used to model the gravity dam, its foundation rock, and the influence of different foundation rocks on the stability of the dam. To do this, a
conceptual model has been developed and different properties of rocks were examined. The varying properties were critically studied in order to investigate the critical configuration that their
significant effects have on the stability. Five (5) different rocks were used and they include: basalt, dolomite, gneiss, limestone and sandstone. The results obtained in this work showed that the dam section is okay and adequate with factor of safety against sliding and overturning to be 2.37 and 2.44 respectively. Also, the final results show that it is more preferable to build gravity dams on basalt rock which is an igneous rock. The next reasonable alternatives are dolomite, limestone and sandstone respectively in order of their decreasing preference. The least rock is gneiss which is a
metamorphic rock.
