Teaching on digital platforms has now become the trend, and whether it is language apps, virtual ... more Teaching on digital platforms has now become the trend, and whether it is language apps, virtual tutoring, or video conferencing tools, there has been a significant rise in usage since the Covid-19 outbreak. In this regard, the study investigated students’ readiness towards online learning during the Malaysia Movement Control Order (MCO) Phase 1. 120 students were asked to respond to a questionnaire. However, only 98 students had responded to the questionnaire. In general, the finding shows that the students were not fully ready for online learning mainly due to the limited access to the internet, and because of this limitation, they prefer to have downloadable videos and lecture presentation slides that they can access at any time asynchronously. This study has implications on identifying students’ learning needs for the digital language classroom as the base for designing the learning materials.

Thus, a lot of effort has been put in to producing students who are competent in communicating effectively in a different social and professional context. One of the ways in enhancing students’ proficiency in English is by using Madlipz. Madlipz is an application that could be downloaded to the handphone. The application allows students to dub their voices and create their own dialogue or monologue based on the video clips that they chose. With regards to this, this study looks into the use of MadLipz in enhancing students’ proficiency in English. Students who took Oral Communication in English were involved in this study. This study highlighted the effectiveness of film review in enhancing English speaking skills amon... more This study highlighted the effectiveness of film review in enhancing English speaking skills among students at the tertiary level. The population involved was 30 students from an Essential Communication Skills class at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. There were two parts of film review carried out for this study, namely, Part 1: Individual Film Review Presentation and Part 2: Group Discussion and 2 weeks prior, the teacher-researcher provided materials such as examples of vocabularies, grammars, phrases and sentences students could use to describe film genres, characters, themes, recommendations and criticisms in their film review. For Part 1 of the film review, in groups of 5, individual students orally presented the review of their chosen film whilst showing their power point slides whereas for Part 2, they gave ideas and opinions on the best film of those presented by their group members.
