Rainbow trout samples were collected from six cage farms with a capacity of 250 tons or more and representing different regions for two years between January-December 2014 and January-December 2016. Myxobolus sp. was detected in the gill lamellae of 29 (2.69%) out of 1080 rainbow trout that were parasitologically and histopathologically examined. The highest infection prevalence (10.00%) was determined in trout farms located in the 6th region of the Keban reservoir. In comparison, the lowest infection prevalence (1.11%) was observed in the 3rd region of the Keban reservoir. The prevalence of Myxobolus sp was higher in trout cage farms in the Keban Dam lake (4.07%) than in the Karakaya reservoir (1.30%). It was determined that Myxobolus sp cysts settle in the capillaries in the secondary gill lamellae of trout and cause pathological disorders such as hypertrophy and hyperplasia. It is important to start routine molecular monitoring of Myxosporean parasite species in cage farms in order to diagnose the exact species and to take precautions before they turn into epidemics.

There are a few species of medicinal leeches. However, H. medicinalis and H. verbana are known in Turkey. Currently, Turkey is one of the world’s most important leech-exporting countries. Secretion of the salivary glands of medical leeches contains more than 100 bioactive substances. These secretions include vasodilators, bacteriostatic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anticoagulants, anti-edematous, which eliminate microcirculatory disorders, restore the damaged vascular permeability of tissues and organs, eliminate hypoxia, reduce blood pressure, increase immune system activity, resolving the cause of pain and improve the bioenergetic status of the organism. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (Food and Drug Authority of USA-FDA) have allowed the sale of leeches in this country, the use for plastic surgery, the general purposes and microsurgery in 2004. We show here that freshwater snails can potentially be controlled by leech predation; in principle, this approach could significantly reduce snail-borne parasitic diseases (SBPDs). Specifically, glossiphoniid leeches, Helobdella austinensis and congener species , consume freshwater snails indiscriminately, while other common leeches do not. A single adult H. austenensis , for example, can consume up to its weight in snails, e.g. Physella acuta, per day. Our predator–prey models suggest that snail populations could be eliminated in relatively short time periods (approximately six months) using a leech biocontrol approach. This could have considerable impact on global SBPDs by breaking the intermediate host life cycle.

The fish were divided into four groups. The first group was fed with diets containing no sulfamerazine; the second group was supplemented with sulfamerazine at 100 mg kg-1 for 21 days; the third group was treated with sulfamerazine at 200 mg kg-1 for 21 days; fourth group were supplemented with sulfamerazine at 400 kg-1 for 21days. Blood samples were taken to determine of the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and catalase (CAT) activities from fish on the 3 rd , 7 th , 14 th and 21 st days of feeding. The levels of MDA were lower in the groups exposed to three different doses of sulfamerazine treatment than in the control group on day 3 rd. MDA levels began to increase depending on time at group supplemented with sulfamerazine. MDA levels were found to be higher at fish exposed to 200 mg kg-1 dose than those observed in fish exposed to 100 and 400 mg kg-1 dose of sulfamerazine (P<0.05). CAT activities increased in rainbow trout after application of three different doses of sulfamerazine on day 3 rd of exposure, while they decreased after application of sulfamerazine on day 14 th , 21 st of exposure. CAT activities were found to be higher at fish exposed to 200 mg kg-1 dose of sulfamerazine than those observed in fish exposed to 100 and 400 mg kg-1 dose (P<0.05). It was observed that oxidant-antioxidant status changed in rainbow trout after application of different doses of sulfamerazine.

This study was conducted to investigate the ameliorating effects of lycopene on TCF-induced toxicity in carp by evaluating haematological parameters and oxidant/antioxidant status. Fish were randomly divided into seven experimental groups. These groups were arranged as follows: control (no treatment) group, corn oil group, lycopene (10 mg kg −1) group, TCF-I (11 mg L −1) group, TCF-I (11 mg L −1) plus lycopene (10 mg kg −1) group, TCF-II (22 mg L −1) group and TCF-II (22 mg L −1) plus lycopene (10 mg kg −1) group. At the end of 14 days administration, blood and tissue (liver, kidney, and gill) samples were collected. Haematological changes [red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) count, haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, haematocrit (Ht) level, and erythrocyte indices: mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)] were determined in the blood samples, while antioxidant parameters [(malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities] were evaluated in the liver, kidney and gill samples. The results demonstrated that all the haematological parameters were significantly decreased in the TCF-I and TCF-II groups when compared to the control group. Notable increases in the tissue MDA levels were observed in the TCF-treated groups. In contrast, significant decreases were observed in the tissue SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities and GSH levels in the TCF-I and TCF-II groups. However, simultaneous treatment with lycopene provided a marked normalisation of the haematological and oxidant/antioxidant parameters compared with the TCF-I and TCF-II groups. The findings show that dietary lycopene supplementation might be helpful in abrogation of TCF toxicity by changing haematological conditions and antioxidant status in fish.

For the first time, the blood-feeding leech Limnatis paluda (Tennent, 1859) was recorded from the study area. It was found that small populations of this species are distributed in ten different biotopes of the Fergana Valley. Distribution coordinates of collected leech samples were determined, and ecological features were studied. Some external and internal morphologies of leeches were compared with species recorded from other regions, and similarities and differences were analyzed. It has been determined that L. paluda feeds on frogs in the wild, and the presence of more than two in a frog is fatal. 107 L. paluda were collected in the study, and it was determined that an average of 10.70±8.22 (range, 2-26) leeches could be collected per unit time. The density of this leech species per unit area in the Fergana Valley region of Uzbekistan was calculated as 0.27±0.21 (range, 0.05-0.65) leech/m 2 .

The fish caught for this study were transported to the laboratory under ethical rules and investigated for parasites. According to the results, two different parasite species (Myxobolus cyprini and Lamproglena pulchella) were morphologically identified. Myxobolus cyprini was found in the soft tissue of the pectoral fins of C. trutta as an off-white, oval cyst. In the histopathological examinations of the cysts, the spores of M. cyprini were observed. Lamproglena pulchella was seen in the gills of B. lacerta. No parasite was also encountered in C. umbla. These parasite species are the first records for wildlife fishes of Uzuncayır Dam Lake of Turkey.
