Drawing from materialist theorists such as Karen Barad, Gilles Deleuze, and Felix Guattari, we employ the concept of assemblages to tease out the reality that our shared world is always already in a state of queer becoming. We employ Deleuze and Guattari's concept of assemblages in the form of diagrams to illustrate that sex/gender and sexuality are phenomena that emerge from complex material and discursive entities—which are simultaneously biological/cultural, individual/collective, non-human/human. The implication of this article for environmental education is twofold: (1) Sex/gender and sexuality can be central to understanding how materialist and ontological considerations are vital to a politically engaged environmental education and (2) diagramming assemblages can help students and teachers map and imagine potential becomings, areas for critical engagement and political action, and new ecologically and socially just futures.

M... more This paper explores mindfulness as an innovation for improving literacy skills of deep reading. More specifically, this paper describes a case study of a deep reading intervention where graduate education students participated in an eight-week deep reading training. As an embodied practice, deep reading serves to awaken and evoke the reader's voice, helping the learner to make meaning as a whole person immersed in the embodied nature of language. Deep reading, as other contemplative practices, requires persons to go inside, to find meaning, to know themselves, and to connect to others (Barbezat & Bush, 2014). Unlike many other contemporary approaches in education, deep reading draws upon the involvement of the whole body and mind. Deep reading provides a conduit for stretching the human capacity for imaginative thought, shows promise for developing cognition, quiets the chaos of a distracted society, and, overall, serves to humanize the educational process.

Challenges in Language Testing Around the World

Balancing the relationship between best practices for achievement for English skills, campus academic programs, and a pathway provider is a whole-institution initiative. Higher education decision-making utilizing assessments is subject to controversy, since they are at risk of operating unfairly for students expecting uniform assessment treatment and institutions expecting uniform indications of linguistic readiness. The chapter highlights issues emerging from practices identified from the past five founding years of a university-based ESL program in the USA and international pathway provider. The issues highlighted include: (1) stakeholder relations, (2) student language skills, (3) assessment development, and (4) testing innovations. Rather than a cure-all for the complexities and maladies, the chapter presents details of assessment design and implementation for dealing with the challenges that emerge, in order for other institutions to develop deeper insights into their own language testing relationships that in turn determine student trajectories, institutional connections, and missions of programs. 19.1 Introduction: Purpose and Testing Context Intensive English Programs (IEPs) inside universities face different assessment challenges than those of their academic and administrative colleagues from other disciplines. IEP assessments differ from other disciplines in multiple ways. First, students take intensive English either as a form of skills training or a pathway into degree programs. Students do not graduate with a major or minor specialization, and they often study English full-time and exclusively. In addition, IEP programs in postsecondary institutions exist, at least in part, to generate revenue. As such, they often have

The heteronormative society in which we live has lead these individuals to keep their sexual identity separate from their identity as a teacher for a number of reasons. In addition to exploring these issues, this study aims to understand what it is like to be a queer teacher in the Midwest by focusing on how they construct and maintain their identities.
