Informal digital learning of English (IDLE) is Benson’s conceptual framework that refer to the co... more Informal digital learning of English (IDLE) is Benson’s conceptual framework that refer to the context where English language learners learn English, in which they can learn the language beyond classroom. The framework can be applied with any digital media. The present study was conducted by means of surveys and open-ended questions to investigate how students in an Islamic university in Jakarta used digital technology and how it supported their English learning outcome. The survey of the use of digital devices for English learning was adapted, and the open- ended questions were developed to find out more information about the way how they use the digital tools beyond classroom English learning activities. To analyze the data, descriptive quantitative and thematic analysis were employed. The objectives of this research are to investigate the most dominant source of self-efficacy that... more The objectives of this research are to investigate the most dominant source of self-efficacy that affects students’ English public speaking skills and to discover the students’ strategies in developing their self-efficacy. Moreover, this research is conducted among fourth semester of public speaking students consisting of 32 participants. In this case, the researchers use the descriptive qualitative method to calculate the data gathered. The finding reveals that the main source of self-efficacy that affects students’ public speaking skills is the Psychological and Affective States. Another finding also shows that varied strategies are elaborated in order to develop self-efficacy, such as getting the assistance from teacher’s feedback, finding friends as role model, being noticed by peers, and being able to control physical and emotion stress reactions.

The first part of the questionnaire explored the teachers’ perceptions on the feasibility of involving learners in a range of language course decisions associated with learner autonomy. In this regard, teachers perceived that it is most feasible for students to get involved in decision making related to tasks and activities, topics, materials, and classroom management. The least feasible areas of choice are those related to teaching methodology and objectives. This study aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of lecturers on the professional devel... more This study aims to explore the experiences and perceptions of lecturers on the professional development activities of lecturers in the English Language Education Study Program. This study applied a quantitative descriptive approach by using a questionnaire as an instrument to collect data. This study's subjects were the lecturers of the English Education Study Program at a private university in Jakarta. The findings indicate that the professional development activities that have been attended by the majority of English Education lecturers are research activities, both individually and in groups, conferences or seminars, and workshops or training related to courses and/or other topics related to education. The professional development activities needed by lecturers include training related to National Education Standards (60%), multicultural teaching (60%), knowledge and understanding (competence) of the subject (53%), and teaching for students with special needs (53%). This study also confirms that effective time management for organizing or developing professional development activities regarding teaching schedules and other administrative activities is urgently needed. That way, lecturers can still fulfill their obligations to teach, research, and do community service while still having the opportunity to develop their professionalism.

Therefore, attention should be given to the quality of the language learning environment that is encouraging and can enhance learning and achievement. Ajmain et al. (Chapter 11) illustrate how learning and memorising might be conducted through specific Islamic singing (nasheed) that may holistically develop the individuals. This art of sound has been applied everyday by Muslims as, for example, they recite the Quran. Huda et al. (Chapter 12) accentuate the importance of moral responsibility on digital learning from the IE perspective. This literature study reveals that there is a need for Islamic teaching and learning guidelines that develop Muslim learners’ cognitive, psychomotoric, and the professional ability to deal with societal problems. Huda et al. (Chapter 13) critically discuss that learning ethics culture in IE is an important dimension of preparing a holistic approach for personal involvement in the society. As the final chapter, Huda et al. conclude that for personal character education, many Islamic schools (pesantren) in Indonesia refer to a book of Al-Zarnuji to develop individual spiritual and intellectual skills. We find the book a documentation of inter-contextual work that addresses the experiences, voices and insights of Muslim educators. This volume promotes a better understanding of how Islam is learnt and taught in different socio-political landscapes especially where Islam becomes the religion of the majority. While it may not mainly focus on children or young people’s spirituality, some chapters of the book provide useful messages for the teaching of religion or spirituality to young people. For instance, in Chapter 11, singing (i.e., nasheed) is viewed as a useful strategy to teach religion (i.e., Islam) to young people who mostly like music, although it may be against some views of Muslims and Muslim scholars who consider music as haram (forbidden). However, the volume would have been better if local terminologies were presented with their equal meanings in English, since this volume is intended for international readers (see, for example, Chapter 6 which includes Keaswajaan within its title). In sum, this volume documents descriptions, discussions, and debates in various contexts of the area around IE useful for for better understanding the world of Islamic education.
