INTRODUCTION United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has estimated the cost of upgr... more INTRODUCTION United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has estimated the cost of upgrading water infrastructure in next 20 years to be about $1 trillion due in part to the age of underground pipes. This cost is expected to further increase after the new “Lead-Free” requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) are implemented on January 4, 2014. How much more would lead-free products cost? What are the new requirements? How can we prepare for it? These are the questions being discussed in the drinking water industry. In the next few months, all involving parties including EPA, manufacturers, and constructors will be working together to address these issues.

Qureshi has combed the records in London, Karachi, and Istanbul to highlight the pan-Islamic aspects of the movement, whereas my thesis emphasizes its nationalist dimensions. Qureshi views the emergence of this mass movement among Indian Muslims as an outcome of their sympathy for their fellow Muslims in the central Islamic lands and their loyalty to the Ottoman sultan as the caliph of Islam. This happened during a period when the Ottoman Empire, defeated in World War I, was threatened with dismemberment by the victorious European powers. Muslims in India pleaded for the retention of the Ottoman sultan-caliph's temporal as well as spiritual powers, and when their pleas went unheard at the Versailles peace conference, they turned against their British rulers ...

The standard of 5 pCi/L for combined radium (Ra) 226 and 228 will affect more than 500 US systems and 1.4 million people in 177 cities in the Midwest. The best available technology for Ra removal includes ion exchange, lime softening, and reverse osmosis. However, hydrous manganese oxide and manganese greensand filtration is capable of removing up to 80% of Ra. For plants designed to remove iron and manganese by a manganese greensand filtration system, the cost of removing Ra is minimal. Results of pilot-and full-scale studies are reported from Bellevue Sanitary District 1 in Brown County, Wis.

It is generally believed that mixed media, which contain anthracite coal, sand, and high-density sand, is closer to an ideal filter than dual media, which contain only coal and sand. However, comparative pilot-and plant-scale studies conducted under identical pretreatment conditions at Minneapolis and at other locations indicate very little difference in performance between the two types of filters.

At high pH, when the predominant mode of alum coagulation is sweep coagulation, increasing the intensity of chemical mixing reduced aluminum residuals only slightly. Reducing the pH with acid was effective in reducing the residuals, but posttreatment pH adjustment with lime to stabilize the water increased its hardness. It appears that the most promising means of reducing aluminum residuals is to replace part of the alum dosage with ferric chloride. At both Minneapolis and St. Paul water treatment plants, ferric chloride, at less than half the dosage of alum, reduced the residuals and resulted in longer filter runs.

In this study, structurally diverse prenylflavonoids were conveniently synthesized by enzymatic catalysis by combining GuILDT, a regiospecific chalcone prenyltransferase, and GuCHI, a stereospecific chalcone isomerase that has promiscuous activity for both chalcones and prenylchalcones as substrates. Our findings provided a new approach for the synthesis of natural/unnatural bioactive prenylflavonoids, including prenylchalcones and optical prenylflavanones with chalcone origins.

These bioactive flavonol glycosides usually have a rhamnose moiety at the 3-OH position of prenylflavonols, such as icariin (9), baohuoside I (1a) and baohuoside II (2a). However, to date, no rhamnosyltransferase has been reported to catalyze the 3-O-rhamnosylation of prenylflavonols. In this article, a flavonol rhamnosyltransferase, EpPF3RT, was identified from E. pseudowushanense B. L. Guo. The recombinant enzyme regiospecifically transfers a rhamnose moiety to 8-prenylkaempferol (1) and anhydroicaritin (2) at the 3-OH position to form baohuoside II (1a) and baohuoside I (2a) in vitro. In addition, a UDP-rhamnose synthase gene, EpRhS, from E. pseudowushanense was functionally characterized and used to produce the UDP-rhamnose sugar donor.
