A dominance of free-floating plants has been associated with a lower number of aquatic ecosystem services and can be explained by shading of rootless submerged macrophytes. Vice versa, high pH and competition for several nutrients have been proposed to explain the dominance of rootless submerged macrophytes. Here, we performed co-culture experiments to disentangle the influence of limitation by different nutrients, by pH effects and by allelopathy in sustaining the dominance of rootless submerged macrophytes. Specifically, we compared the effects of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) deficiencies and an increased pH from 7 to 10 in reducing the growth of free-floating Lemna gibba by the rootless Ceratophyllum demersum. The experiment was conducted in Central-Hungary on mature cv. 'Gönci magyar kajszi' and 'Mandulakajszi' grafted on myrobalán rootstock in 2007. Trees spaced 6 x 4 m, and growing in a chernozem soil at Sóskút in Central-Hungary. Trees were foliar-fertilized with Bioplasma and Naturkomplex as fertilizers and their combination. Foliar sprays were performed: (1) at the stage of white bud, (2) at full bloom and (3) at the stage of intensive shoot growing. In each of spring spray treatments, fertilizers were applied at a rate of 5L ha −1. Trees untreated with fertilizers served as a control. Treatments had no effect on leaf nitrogen. All applied treatments increased leaf phosphorous compared to the control. Consequent effect of treatments was not observed during examined period neither at 'Gönci magyar kajszi' nor 'Mandulakajszi' regarding leaf potassium. However, treatments increased leaf Ca significantly at all sampling time at 'Gönci magyar kajszi'. Treatments had no influenced N, P, K and Ca uptake of different cultivars. Moreover, treatments affected Mg uptake differently at examined cultivars.

Soil samples were collected from two layers of the incubation pots after the second and fourth week to check the status of the tested products and the processes in the soil. The pH and the electric conductivity (EC) of the samples were measured using an electrochemical method, while the ammonium and nitrate content of the samples was determined with a photometric method. Soil pH and EC values slightly were decreased du ring the experiment. Our results pointed out that the increasing dose of SAP caused lower soil pH. The nitrate content of the soil did not change significantly during the experiment. It was found that the increasing SAP content in the products, due to its cross-linked structural property, protected the nitrate ions from leaching. Our results suggest that applied SAP does not bind the nutrient ions so tightly in its structure that it competes with the plant for uptake.

However, field observations showed that under eutrophic conditions with low light availability, Elodea canadensis could be displaced by Elodea nuttallii. Here we investigated the combined effect of environmental factors on the ecophysiological response of the two species in order to explain the differences in their invasion successes. We cultivated the plants in aquaria containing five different nitrogen (N) concentrations and incubated at five different light intensities. For both species increasing nitrogen concentrations resulted in increased relative growth rate, chlorophyll concentration, and actual photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (F PSII), however, they produced less roots. Lowering light intensity resulted in a lower relative growth rate, root production, and nutrient removal. In contrast, chlorophyll concentration in the leaves, and F PSII increased. The main difference between the two Elodea species was that the light compensation point (I c) and weight loss in the dark were significantly higher and photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll concentration were significantly lower for E. canadensis than for E. nuttallii, indicating that the latter can survive under much more shady and hypertrophic conditions. The change in nitrogen concentration of the media and in tissue concentration of the plants indicated that E. nuttallii has a higher nitrogen removal capacity. The ecophysiological differences between the two species can be an explanation for invasion success of E. nuttallii over E. canadensis and thus may explain why the latter is replaced by the first.

Research paper thumbnail of Organic matter manipulations have little effect on gross and net nitrogen transformations in two temperate forest mineral soils in the USA and central Europe

We utilized two existing organic matter manipulation sites in western Oregon, USA and Hungary to investigate these linkages. Our questions were: (1) what effect does the quantity and quality of organic matter have on net and gross N processing in mineral soil? and (2) do these effects vary across sites with very different climate, soils, vegetation, and N deposition status? The organic matter manipulations had small if any effects on gross and net N cycling rates. Gross N cycling rates under low N deposition increased with increasing soil C and N, but C:N ratio had no correlation with gross N cycling rates. Soil ammonium concentrations under high N deposition, however, were higher in the organic matter manipulation plots without roots and lower in plots with double litter, indicating a tree root effect and a litter immobilization effect, respectively, but did not differ significantly under low N deposition. Net ammonium production was lowest in the litter removal and root removal plots and highest in the litter addition plots at both sites. Gross and net N cycling rates and mineral nitrogen pool sizes were generally higher under higher N deposition and lower C:N ratio soil, which was consistent with past studies over gradients of N deposition. By looking at organic matter manipulations in two very www.elsevier.com/locate/foreco Forest Ecology and Management 214 (2005) 320-330 The research described herein was developed by the author, an employee of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), prior to his employment with EPA. Fruit inner qualifying parameters liketitratable acid content and Brix value were also determined. It can be stated that the used products had traceable effect on investigated fruit parameters. Although, leaf N content was not effected bytreatments significantly, relative leaf chlorophyll content significantly increased by both treatments.Used products significantly increased the fruit weight and shape index. Applied treatments significantly decreased the pH of pulp. Treatmentsincreased the acid contents (...

In order to assess possible health risk of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) consumption, levels of Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury and Lead were determined in fresh and dried samples of "Jumbo cot", "Tom cot", "Gold strike", "Gold bar", "Bergeron", "Bergarouge", "Sweet cot", "Yellow cot" and "Zebra" apricot cultivars. Wet digestion of samples with concentrate HNO3 – H2O2 digester mixture and inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectroscopy was used. Highest content of As, Cd, Hg and Pb among all cultivars, were 0.5, 0.04, 1.5 and 0.5mg/kg of dried apricot samples. Fresh fruit samples also contain 0.2, 0.016, 0.6 and 0.2 mg/kg of Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury and Lead respectively. Daily intake of metals, hazard q...
