he Islamic heritage of Cairo was first introduced to the cultural map of Egypt by Edm6 Fran:ois J... more he Islamic heritage of Cairo was first introduced to the cultural map of Egypt by Edm6 Fran:ois Jomard, a member of the French scientific mission accompanying the Napoleonic Expedition to Egypt (1798 to 80o). In his work,' the then 'modern' Cairo was given special attention, receiving a much more detailed map than any previously available with individual buildings historically and architecturally documented and hand crafts surveyed. This encyclopaedic survey of Cairo can be considered a precursory form of large-scale conservation,2 since it in fact paved the way towards extensive intervention on historic Cairo in 882, when the Comit de Conservation des Monuments de l'Art Arabe was founded. The Comite developed a systematic set of actions for safeguarding the Islamic and Coptic heritage of Cairo: buildings with historic value were registered as monuments; monuments were rescued from urban invasions that would eventually have led to a risk of their expropriation and th...

CURRENT OCCUPATION 2005-to date: Owner and manager of "Hampikian: Architecture and Heritage Manag... more CURRENT OCCUPATION 2005-to date: Owner and manager of "Hampikian: Architecture and Heritage Management" An architectural firm specialized in architectural conservation, training and heritage management. 1999 to date: Site architect/management at The Colossi of Memnon and the Temple of Amenhotep III Temple Conservation Project in Luxor (average of three months/ y e a r) 2000-to date: Teaching at Misr International University (MIU) Course titles: 1. Conservation of Historical Buildings-2 levels, 2. History of Art and Architecture of the Ancient World, 3. History of Art and Architecture of the Medieval Christian World, 4. History of Art and Architecture of the Islamic world, 5. Urban and architectural development of the city of Cairo, and, 6. History of Urbanism (Ancient to the present). KEY QUALIFICATIONS Licensed architectural engineer specialized in conservation and heritage management. Currently and since 2005 owner and manager of a Cairo-based architectural firm. More than 30 years of field experience in many conservation projects of historic buildings belonging to Islamic Period in Cairo, Ancient Egyptian architecture in Egypt, and, Armenian architecture in Cairo, Alexandria and Armenia. In addition to the practical conservation practice, experience in consultancy work, mostly with international teams, in preparing project proposals, and in fundraising. Postgraduate studies in architectural history, archaeology, architectural conservation, and urban history in Armenia, Egypt, Germany, Italy and the States (a PhD in archaeology, a master in history of Islamic architecture, a second master in history of Armenian architecture, diplomas on different types of conservation). Teaching experience includes lecturing in private universities in Egypt such as MIU and al-Akademiyya al-'Arabiyya and coordinating workshops, training courses for professionals, and lecturing in different academic, scientific, and public circles. Research accompanying teaching and practical conservation involves the production of 22 articles and one monograph. Among the highlights of the conservation works directed by the author are The Conservation Project of al-Salihiyya madrasa and minaret in Bayn al-Qasrayn (grant from the German Institute of Archaeology), The Conservation Project of Bab Zuwayla (grant from the American Research Center in Egypt), various sabils and tombstones in the Historic cemeteries of Historic Cairo around the Imam al-Shafi'i, The Conservation Projects of the Armenian Church in Ramses Street, The Historic Chapel at Marmina in Old Cairo, and the Catholic Armenian Church in Sabri Abu Alam, Downtown Cairo (sponsored by the Armenian Patriarchates in Cairo).
