In addition to reviewing adaptations, such as a project website and press releases, deliberate complementarity with other processes, an evaluation process, and guest speakers, the presentation will consider the change in workshop goals over time. The workshop series has gone through three stages, with three related goals. The first was exploratory. The second focused on catalyzing confidence building measures. The third focuses on impacting the larger conflict, linking local and global.

It does so by highlighting consciousness engaged explicitly and implicitly in many conflict resolution practices and consciousness dynamics considered in the emerging literature by conflict resolution practitioners. In particular, increasing awareness, consciousness structures, shifts in consciousness, transitional space, and embodied engagement are useful frameworks for understanding individual transformation within conflict resolution processes. The article concludes that the study of conflict resolution is incomplete without consideration of consciousness in conflict and conflict resolution. Furthermore, formally engaging consciousness dynamics as part of the study of conflict resolution holds promise for improving conflict resolution practice. W hat are the roles of consciousness in conflict and conflict resolution?

We will examine the key concepts, definitions and theories of conflict causation, and consider a range of practical tools and approaches to conflict management. Attention will be paid to the distinguishing characteristics of social, political and economic conflicts, as well as to the challenges and opportunities presented by multi-level community organizing, grassroots conflict resolution and related strategies. Additional focal points include the role of culture, ethnicity, gender, intergenerational relations and religious affiliation on conflict dynamics and conflict resolution processes. Practical exercises will provide students with opportunities to analyze real life conflicts, and practice various methods for conflict resolution with an emphasis on collaborative problem solving, negotiation and mediation. Seminar-style discussions, presentations and practical exercises constitute the bulk of the course’s structure, supplemented with occasional videos and guest speakers.

What is the peace writ large to which efforts hope to add up? What are the characteristics of peaceful nations? While some have answered these questions in theory, this paper will explore these questions by looking at today's empirical realities. What types of peaceful nations exist in today's world?

The broad range of perspectives presented here lends itself more to raising questions than to drawing definitive conclusions. But these essays do offer suggestions to others who would attempt to create zones of peace. The questions raised in these essays might serve as a checklist of factors for analysts and practitioners to consider when working with a zone of peace. While no “lesson learned” in one zone will be directly transferable to another, it may nevertheless be helpful even in building quite a different zone.Reviewing the zones of peace described here reveals some characteristics all zones of peace share. As Arie Kacowicz notes, when discussing geographic zones that avoid interstate wars, no single variable accounts for the maintenance ofthat peace. All zones of peace are affected by factors reflecting their creation, nature, dynamics, and impacts.

This article focuses on two related case studies of the many roles played by international conflict resolution scholars in Georgian–Abkhaz and in Georgian–South-Ossetian relations from 1992 to 2008. Drawing on interviews with insider-partial conflict resolution scholars, relevant international scholar-practitioners of conflict resolution, and the leadership of all parties of the conflicts, conducted between 1996 and 2008, the article presents a comprehensive analysis of the variety of roles conflict resolution scholar-practitioners have played in these conflicts during the wars and the recovery from war. The analysis suggests the need for clear ethical guidelines that cover traditional scholarly roles as well as scholar-practitioner roles including advising conflict parties, facilitating conflict resolution processes and analysing the conflicts. In particular, dilemmas emerge as scholar-practitioners move back and forth between these modes of engaged scholarship.
