The first chapter reflects on the genesis of film language, and in this context, considers the reception of Dickens’ works. Next the text turns to borderline cases of adaptation: genre/media hybrid, deep remixability, and allusion. The notions of genre and media are considered as only quantitatively different, not qualitatively, both instances of discourses and apparatuses considered by the theory of discourse (Bakhtin, Foucault etc.). The second part of the text presents an artistic inquiry—concepts and ideas used in production of artworks by the authors of this essay—that sheds light on the possible methods of studying adaptations. Two aspects are foregrounded: the ideas of the transformation of the source text into an archive of fragments that are subsequently put in new meaningful constellations, and the use of Shakespeare’s works in the role of a mediator in the understanding of the language of new media art.

The paper presents a textual model that experimentally simulates a possible ordering principle for archives. Richter's statements in the book Text are cut up and used as short quotations. Those that relate to multiple aspects of the painter's oeuvre are identified as hubs in the semantic network. The hubs are organized paratactically, as an array of different themes. The paper presents a methodological hypothesis and an experimental model that aim to connect the research of real networks with the paradigms of humanistic interpretation. We have to bear in mind that the network is a result of the researcher's interpretative approach, which is added to the initial archive included in the book Text. The breaking up of Richter's poetics into atoms of quotations is an experimental proposal of a new textuality in art history and humanities, which METACRITIC JOURNAL FOR COMPARATIVE STUDIES AND THEORY 3.1 64 has its own history. In comparison to digital archives with complex interfaces that often tend to obscure the content, the elements in our experiment appear as specific configurations of the semantic network and are presented in a limited number of linear texts. The method of listing of quotations gathers the fragments into a potential "whole", i.e. a narrativized gateway to an archive according to the researcher's interpretation.

The methodology of coding meaning in visual form is explained for four different sculptures and an artist book. The approach is tied to the allegoric thinking in building emblems and miniatures in the history of art (16 th century and later). The use of diagrams is integrated in the experimental projections of a future archeology. The data of digital humanities research can achieve greater visibility and address a wider cultural context when presented in collaboration with art institutions.

Such courses are expanding the core computer science curricula towards multimedia communication design. However, to practice visualization on datasets in a non-focused way may diminish the quality of educational effect as well as the quality of the results of students' projects. A collaboration with domain experts has proven to be very beneficial by involving students in various research projects and platforms. The students of informatics at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, have touched upon humanities projects in different special domains: the datasets provided by Institute of Contemporary History (INZ, Ljubljana), interface design for electronic scholarly editions based on TEI XML files, documentation of new media art exhibitions, and others. As noted by some contributors in A New Companion to Digital Humanities (2016) with relevance to the latter aspect of interdisciplinary contact, the domain of new media art constitutes an essential inspiration for the study of digital humanities methods and approaches. In the second part of the paper, the multi-year collaboration between the University of Nova Gorica and University of Ljubljana computer-science curricula will be presented. The WomenWriters database, as well as subsequently the NEWW VRE, has been used in different models of interdisciplinary collaboration.

An aspect of the transformed relation to reality as a consequence of technological innovation is set for each model as the theme that a selection of new media art works reflects upon by building interactive functional communication models.
As indicated in the introduction, multiculturalism of the Slovenian territory in the 19 th centur... more As indicated in the introduction, multiculturalism of the Slovenian territory in the 19 th century was reflected in the culture, in particular literature, which was mostly connected to the Germanic world. This significantly affected the reception of European women writers from the early 19 th century to 1918 when with the formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, the Slovenian population entered a new form of multiculturalism and to some degree may have been said to have returned to its Slavic roots. Slovenian literary history as regards the presence of women writers in the European literature, particularly their reception in Slovenian territory, is incomplete. For example, during the period in question, the Slovenian literary historian Janko Kos mentions only the French woman writer George Sand as an eventual influence on one Slovenian author, Josip Jurčič (Kos 2001: 168), whereas based on further research, at the time more than seven hundred eighty European women writers were received in the Slovenian territory, which suggests that this reception has to date been overlooked. This chapter elucidates this information: where, in what manner and who received the women writers. Various types of reception of foreign women writers are identified, starting with the Slovenian, German and French periodical press published locally in the 19 th century. A lot of citations, articles and obituaries naming women writers have been located in such periodicals, as well as reviews of their works. Newspaper columns and literary overviews publishing news about the authors and their works are given special attention. Moreover, the very first mention of a foreign woman writer has also been identified in the periodical press. Next comes the reception in the catalogues of lending libraries, private collections and the repertoire of the Slovenian theatres which shows what works by foreign women writers were actually available locally. Thanks to this repertoire we were able to check what works were staged in local theatres in the 19 th century. This is followed by the Slovenian translations of works listed in the local bibliographies either as stand-alone publications or published in periodicals. Translations are a relevant indicator of changes after 1848 because translating increased significantly, particularly in relation to the national movement. Finally, there is a section dedicated to the reception of European women writers in Slovenian literary works and by local authors, both women and men. Indeed, local writers discussed foreign women writers in their correspondence, they quoted and mentioned them in their works, notes or diaries, published articles and obituaries as well as reviews of their works, many of which they translated. All of this indicates a potential, if not likely, influence of foreign women writers on Slovenian writers and their significance for Slovenian literature and culture in general. 19 (1850-1891) and Carmen Sylva (1843-1916).

The DARIAH Working Group Women Writers in History (https://www.dariah.eu/activities/working-groups/women-writers-in-history/) takes this task a step further, and investigates historical sources until 1930 to find out whether female authors were read in the past. The objective of the DARIAH Working Group WWIH is: to carry out research about female authorship in history, the international reception of women’s writing and the connections between women authors. Evidence of readership, translations and commentary is contained in the digital repository NEWW VRE (Virtual Research Environment) http://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/womenwriters, which serves as a collaborative research tool for the above mentioned working group.

The diverse range of approaches and of study texts in (Re) Writing Without Borders: Contemporary Intermedial Perspectives on Literature and the Visual Arts celebrates the proliferation of word and image media, and the porosity between them, and attests to the continuing relevance of literature and the visual arts in producing and reproducing meaning within contemporary contexts. The essays gathered here examine cross-artistic encounters with a view to capture the most up-to-date interaction between literature and the visual arts.
