The study was conducted with two multichannel CI recipients from the Audiological Research Center (CPA/HRAC) of the University of São Paulo Brazil (USP) and two audiologists. One of the professionals was based at the CPA/HRAC-USP, which was the reference center (RC), and the other audiologist was based at an Audiology Center located more than 900mi away from the RC, which was called remote area (RA). The audiologist from RA had no previous experience in programming CI devices. The procedure consisted in remotely training the RA audiologist. After the conference call, the RA professional and the implanted subjects answered a previously elaborated questionnaire. The study showed the following advantages of applying Cochlear Implant Remote Programming: decentralization of the hearing health care services, training and enabling of professionals, cost reduction for the Public Health Care System (SUS), and systematic monitoring of implanted patients. Conference call is an effective, feasible and innovative model of monitoring cochlear implant's recipients in Brazil. However more studies are necessary in order to make the remote programming available nationwide.

Male patient aged 18 years old, 1.52 m in height, admitted in the General Hospital of Triângulo Mineiro Federal University on November 11, 2003, complaining of intense diffuse abdominal pain like severe cramps, without triggering factors, associated with asthenia and hyporexia. This seems to be one of the few reports of KDS syndrome diagnoses by autopsy, where alterations in the thyroid gland connected with hypotrophy and probable congenital hypothyroidism were described and resulted in complications such as disseminated intravascular coagulation and hemophagocytic syndrome with fast progression to death of an 18-year-old patient.

The city interventions produce changes in the already started process to expand the production of citizenship/health trough the connective power of the collective battle. The link of these thematic may contribute to expand the problematic field of the psychosocial attention and the appliance to the strengthening of the struggle against mental intitutions in Espírito Santo, producing new ways of acting in the already mentioned sectors.

Purification of ER from PM by a removal of PM modified with concanavalin A reduced H + transport activity of P H + -ATPase by more than 75% while that of V H + -ATPase remained unchanged. ER H + ATPase exhibits higher resistance to bafilomycin (I 50 = 38.4 nM) than Golgi and vacuole pumps (I 50 = 0.18 nM). The ratio between a coupling efficiency of the pumps in ER, membranes heavier than ER, vacuoles and Golgi is 1.0, 2.1, 8.5 and 14 with the highest coupling in the Golgi. The comparative analysis of the initial velocities of H + transport mediated by V H + -ATPases in the ER, Golgi and vacuole membrane vesicles, and immunoreactivity of the catalytic subunit A and regulatory subunit B further supported the conclusion that V H + -ATPase is the intrinsic enzyme of the yeast ER and Golgi and likely presented by distinct forms and/or selectively regulated.

In the present study, we evaluated the protective effect of immunization with both LJM19 and KMP11 DNA plasmid together. Concerning the protection against an infection by L. chagasi, immunization with DNA plasmids coding LJM19 or KMP11, as well as with both plasmids combined, induced IFN-␥ production in draining lymph nodes at 7, 14 and 21 days post-immunization. Immunized hamsters challenged with L. chagasi plus Salivary Gland Sonicate (SGS) from Lutzomyia longipalpis showed an enhancement of IFN-␥/IL-10 and IFN-␥/TGF- in draining lymph nodes after 7 and 14 days of infection. Two and five months after challenge, immunized animals showed reduced parasite load in the liver and spleen, as well as increased IFN-␥/IL-10 and IFN-␥/TGF- ratios in the spleen. Furthermore, immunized animals remained with a normal hematological profile even five months after the challenge, whereas L. chagasi in unimmunized hamsters lead to a significant anemia. The protection observed with LJM19 or KMP11 DNA plasmids used alone was very similar to the protection obtained by the combination of both plasmids.

Alterations in food intake such as caloric restriction modulate the expression of SIRT1 and SIRT4... more Alterations in food intake such as caloric restriction modulate the expression of SIRT1 and SIRT4 proteins that are involved in pancreatic β-cell function. Here, we search for a possible relationship between insulin secretion and the expression of SIRT1, SIRT4, PKC and PKA in islets from adult rats submitted to CR for 21 days. Rats were fed with an isocaloric diet (CTL) or received 60% (CR) of the food ingested by CTL. The dose-response curve of insulin secretion to glucose was shifted to the right in the CR compared with CTL islets (EC(50) of 15.1±0.17 and 10.5±0.11 mmol/L glucose). Insulin release by the depolarizing agents arginine and KCl was reduced in CR compared with CTL islets. Total islet insulin content and glucose oxidation were also reduced in CR islets. Leucine-stimulated secretion was similar in both groups, slightly reduced in CR islets stimulated by leucine plus glutamine but higher in CR islets stimulated by ketoisocaproate (KIC). Insulin secretion was also higher in CR islets stimulated by carbachol, compared with CTL islets. No differences in the rise of cytosolic Ca(2+) concentrations stimulated by either glucose or KCl were observed between groups of islets. Finally, SIRT1, but not SIRT4, protein expression was lower in CR compared with CTL islets, whereas no differences in the expression of PKC and PKA proteins were observed. In conclusion, the lower insulin secretion in islets from CR rats was, at least in part, due to an imbalance between the expression of SIRT1 and SIRT4.

Immunity to Phlebotomus papatasi or Lutzomyia longipalpis saliva or salivary components confers protection against an infection by Leishmania in the presence of the homologous saliva. However, immunization with Lutzomyia intermedia saliva did not protect mice against Leishmania braziliensis plus Lu. intermedia saliva. In the present study, we have studied whether the immunization with Lu. longipalpis saliva or a DNA plasmid coding for LJM19 salivary protein would be protective against L. braziliensis infection in the presence of Lu. intermedia saliva, the natural vector for L. braziliensis.
