Study area was identified in a rice soil of about 120 hectares used for FGN/IFAD Value Chain Development program (VCDP). Three profile pits were dug on a transect line of about 100 – 200m apart for suitability evaluation study. The aim of the study was to use parametric and non – parametric suitability evaluation to study the rice soils under Asu River Group parent material. Parametric method is where each limiting characteristic was rated using information provided on factor ratings of land use requirements for wetland ricetable. In Nonparametric method, pedons were placed in suitability classes by matching their land characteristics with the agronomic requirements of rice. The index of productivity (IP) (actual and potential) was calculated using the equation: IP= A x √(B/100 x C/100 x D/100xE/100). Suitability evaluation results show that climate, soil physical conditions and wetness were optimum...

Ltd has carried out oil exploration and drilling dating back to over thirty years. This has led to a number of spillages on most arable soils in a community where peasant farming is a major occupation. Three locations were selected for the study, and designated as Location A, B and C which had experienced spillage in 1995, 2002 and 2007 respectively. Causes of spillage ranged from activity of vandals, leakage or explosion of the piping materials and or pressure from the crude oil products. This research however, sought to investigate the effects of the crude oil spillage on the selected heavy metals concentration of the soils as excess dosage of heavy metals on soils and invariably crops may lead to adverse health effect on man and animals which depend on crops for survival. The selected heavy metals studied were Chromium (Cr), Cadmium (Pb) and Lead (Pb). Results obtai...

This research, aims at revealing the excruciating ordeals of African-Americans in the hands of not just racist Whites but in the hands of black males as well. This research goes further to show how the black female character is struggling to assert herself from patriarchal subjugation. This research uses both primary and secondary sources of data to carry out a detailed exploration of the text under study. For the primary sources, a study of selected poems of Maya Angelou will be used. While the secondary sources consist studies that other researchers have made, concerning this research. This research adopts two theoretical criticisms the Feminist literary theory and the Marxist literary criticism. These theories have been able to promote the status of subjugated black females, by portraying them in positive light, ma...

Department of Soil Science and Land Resources Management, Federal University Wukari. *Corresponding author: nathanielobasi2000@yahoo.com The study was carried out at Agubia Ikwo in Central Ebonyi State and aimed at using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in suitability evaluation of some selected soils for rice production. Three rice growing soils were identified in the area which include upland, lowland and irrigated rice soils. Three profile pits were sunk in each of the three rice cropping soils summing up to a total of 9 profiles. Suitability evaluations indicated that soil climatic requirements as well as soil physical conditions were optimum (S3) and near optimum (S2) while wetness properties indicated marginally suitable at the uplands and optimum at the lowland and irrigated soils. By p...

Research paper thumbnail of The effect of operational parameters on biosorption of Cd2+, Ni2+ and Cr6+ using Glycine max pod (Soya Bean)

Environmental Risk Assessment and Remediation, 2018

The maximum uptake of Cd 2+ (1.445 mg/g), Ni 2+ (1.585 mg/g) and Cr 6+ (1.594 mg/g) was observed when used 2.0g of GMP biomass, 25 mgL-1 of initial Cd 2+ , 50 mg/l of initial Ni 2+ and 50 mg/l of initial Cr +6 concentration at pH 5, 6 and 3 and contact time of 90, 60 and 90 min at room temperature for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ and Cr 6+ respectively. The experimental data were analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) isotherm models. The monolayer adsorption capacity Of GMP was found to be 21.56 mg/g, 53.76 mg/g and 18.87 mg/g for Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ and Cr 6+ ions, respectively. The kinetics of the adsorption was tested using pseudofirst-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich and intra-particle diffusion models. The results showed that the adsorption of Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ and Cr 6+ ions onto GMP proceeds according to the pseudo-second-order model.

Methods: Location-allocation model has been applied to find out the parts of the city having poor coverage. Potential sites were recommended wherefrom all demand points will be covered within a predefined impedance cutoff of time of five minutes as per the norms of Standard Fire Advisory Council (SFAC). The available sites to set up a fire station were identified using land use and land cover map that has been prepared from Landsat 8 satellite image were from agricultural land, wasteland land, follow land having area greater than 3 hectares were given as candidate (potential) sites. Results: Within the travel time of five minutes the result indicates that 66.45 percent of city population in the Southeast and Southwest is un-served. Two scenarios have been adopted to fulfill the requirements of such emergency facility; by relocating the existing facilities and without relocating existing facilities. In both the cases nine fire stations are required to cover the entire city effectively. Conclusion: Location allocation model provides the solution for spatial decision not to find the optimal locations for locating the emergency service facilities but also acts as tool to determine where and how many facilities are in need to fulfill the all requirements. Hence, it is advisable to adopt the second method that is, establishing six new fire stations without relocating existing three fire stations, which would be cost effective.
