In carrying out this study, three specific objectives and one null hypothesis were postulated. The descriptive survey method was adopted because of its advantage of collecting and analyzing data of a small number of population and generalizing it to the entire population. Also, the questionnaire was used in collecting data from a sample of 390 students in five tertiary institutions in Port Harcourt. A random sample drawn from 28,900 students was determined through a mathematical and representative process using the Yard’s formula. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. While the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) analysis was used to test the null hypothesis postulated for the study. Results showed similarities/divergences in the news coverage and reportage approach of the stations. Budget/bills/public hearings and motions dominated the news focus. Critical analysis in reportage of the House was almost non-existent. No clear case of media agenda-setting was established, as there was little or zero influence the media had on directing the course of the Assembly. Rather, the media’s focus was determined by the steps of the lawmakers. It was recommended that a weekly magazine program dedicated to the activities of the Assembly be adopted by each radio station. This would help incorporate information that a timed-news bulletin cannot accommodate and fan the flame of investigative journalism and critical analysis of the activities of the Assembly. Research paper thumbnail of The media, electoral campaign rallies and government’s hypocrisy of physical distancing in the COVID-19 era: The Nigerian experience

Through the media these mass campaign gatherings are relayed to thousands of voters outside the venues of these events. In fact, in several instances regular programming on TV has been suspended for live coverage of campaign rallies sponsored by politicians and their parties. Mediated images of mammoth crowds converged at campaign grounds is an eloquent testimony of the mobilisation and management prowess of campaign managers of politicians at an election time. But in the COVID era, it is disturbing, not only because of the health risks posed by such large gatherings in defiance of the state-run NCDC established COVID-19 protocols on physical distancing, but more worrisome that t...

Research paper thumbnail of One war, different coverage: Exploring cultural influences on international media framing of the Iraq War

To buttress this fact, the spotlight was on international media coverage of the war in Iraq. The Iraq War was a defining media event. To underpin cultural influences on the war coverage, the paper reviewed five studies (Ravi, 2005; Dimitrova & Connolly-Ahern, 2007; Kolmer & Semetko, 2009; Barker, 2012, Gou et al., 2015) on the coverage of the war in different countries. Results revealed that the cultural context within which each news source was situated shaped the news representation of the war. The cultural factors that influenced the coverage were beyond the control of journalists and their media organizations, suggesting that culture is an important variable that should be considered when studying news production and coverage. The findings reinforce the widely held view that news production is shaped by competing influences, including cultural values.

Content analysis was used to generate data for the study. Four purposively selected Nigerian national dailies: THISDAY, The Guardian, Vanguard, and The Sun published between January 1, 2006 and October 4, 2009 were content analyzed. The population was 5,532 issues from where a sample of 553 was systematically selected. The units of analysis for the study include straight news, feature article, editorial opinion, interview, and letter to the editor that made reference to militancy in the Niger Delta. Coding was by two independent coders based on frequency, prominence, portrayal of militancy, format of presentation, and language of reports. The results showed that Nigerian Newspapers covered militancy in the Niger Delta in a fair, balanced and responsible manner, even though there were a few instances when confrontational languages slipped into reports. It also found that the dailies acco...

It began by exploring the “window of opportunities” ICTs hold for the LDCs. The paper however argued that these benefits can only touch on the lives of this section of the world if ICTs are made affordable, and the issue of poverty is adequately addressed. Among the several road bumps against ICT diffusion in LDCs that the paper identified are illiteracy, poverty, poor ICT infrastructure, and weak policy and regulatory framework. It is the paper’s position that these obstacles, no matter how daunting they look, are surmountable given the right government policy and collaboration among the government, the private sector and civil society. The work offered elaborate measures of how to dismantle the road blocks against ICTs’ penetration in LDCs. Key words: Impediments, Information, Communication, Technology, Least Developed Countries

Economies of nations were shut down following a forced lockdown imposed by the rampaging disease. As of June 4, 2020, number of global deaths caused by the disease is put at 388 thousand, 658 people, with more than 2 million people threatened with job loss globally. Social research linked most patients to the Wuhan whole food market where sea food and live animals are sold. Given the high infectivity of the virus in question, SARS-CoV-19, the rate of transmission of the disease has been on the rise globally. A cure is yet to be found and the battle with the pandemic is still on. From a multi-disciplinary perspective, the paper presents pertinent facts about the novel coronavirus of 2019, and justifies some therapeutic suggestions the health world is currently tinkering with (Remdesivir, Azithromycin, Chloroquine/Hydroxychloroquine, Chlorpromazine, Immu...

Research paper thumbnail of Media, war and propaganda: A content analysis of U.S. propaganda in Time and Newsweek coverage of the Iraq War

The aim was to ascertain how America used propaganda in her attempts to shore up support for the war and sway her targets. Through a content analysis of Time and Newsweek for a period of three months (February-April, 2003), the study established that Washington applied most, card stacking propaganda technique in search of global support, with Time printing more U.S. propaganda (64.8%) than Newsweek (35.2%). Results indicate that in spite of her generous application of propaganda, the U.S. didn’t win popular support for the war. It can therefore be concluded that the military operation she led in Iraq was an unpopular one. It is recommended that another study combine content analysis and survey to investigate forces that shaped the war coverage.

The survey method was adopted while four research questions guided this study. Questionnaire and personal interview were the instruments for data collection while stratified random sampling technique was used to draw 396 respondents from the population using the Taro Yamene statistical sampling method. For clarity purposes, data obtained was reported using simple percentages and frequencies. Results of the analysis indicated that a majority of the respondent...
