The study aimed to determine the views of gifted students on the units on "Matter and Its Na... more The study aimed to determine the views of gifted students on the units on "Matter and Its Nature" using the EPTS Curriculum Model. The data was collected from four gifted 6th graders. Semi-structured interviews and diaries were analyzed thematically. Findings showed that students had positive thoughts about the unit. They stated that the lessons were taught with modeling, experimentation, computer-assisted simulation. They enjoyed learning these lessons. The students stated that they did not like the traditional education system in formal education, but they found the lessons taught in this context interesting. The fact that the students found the science courses created using this model effective and enjoyable. It shows that the stakeholders can teach science concepts more effectively and permanently by using this model. teachers should definitely use this model in their lessons, and researchers should also carry out studies where they can adapt the curriculum model to ot...

The purpose of this study is to evaluate students’ views about the noise level in school, its effects, and control of it at two primary schools (one public school and one private school) located in a district of Bursa - within the scope of the TUBITAK 1001 project numbered 114K738. The research sample consists of 432 third and fourth graders, 223 of whom are from the public school and 209 of whom are from the private school. To collect data, a 20-question survey was administered to the students, and noise measurements were carried out in the schools. According to the findings obtained from the analysis of the answers from the student questionnaire, the students think that the noise level is high especially during break times. The study was carried out with 20 primary school 3rd and 4th grade student volunteers. Research data are the pictures drawn by the children and the semi-structured interview records. From the analysis of the students' drawings, three main themes, namely "visual indicator", "sign", and "symbol" are identified in this paper. The reasons for the noise in the school are depicted quite well in the student pictures; noise is reflected as a phenomenon that is disturbing, destructive, threatening physiological-psychological health, and negatively affecting social life and learning in school. Bu çalışmanın amacı denge ve tork ile ilgili gündelik yaşamdan bir biçimlendirici değerlendirme s... more Bu çalışmanın amacı denge ve tork ile ilgili gündelik yaşamdan bir biçimlendirici değerlendirme sorusu kullanarak yapılan öğretim uygulamasını tanıtmak ve değerlendirmektir. Uygulama bir devlet lisesinde fizik dersinde iki şubede öğrenim gören toplam 52 tane, 11. sınıf öğrencileriyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veri toplama aracı olarak denge ve tork ile ilgili biçimlendirici yoklama sorusu çalışma başında ve sonunda kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin denge ve tork ile ilgili sahip oldukları bilgiler ortaya çıkarıldıktan sonra, bu konuda hazırlanan gösteri deneyi Tahmin-Açıklama-Gözlem-Açıklama süreçlerini içerecek şekilde uygulanmıştır. Öğrencilerin yapmış oldukları tahminlerin frekansı ve açıklamaların örnekleri sunularak değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Uygulama öncesinde öğrencilerin çoğunluğunun özdeş olmayan nesnelerin ağırlık merkezinde her iki taraftaki ağırlığın eşit olduğu düşüncesine sahip oldukları anlaşılmıştır, ancak bunun fiziksel olarak mümkün olmadığı çalışmada gösterilmiştir. Yapılan uygulama sonrasında, öğrencilerin denge ve tork konusundaki kavramsal anlama düzeylerinin karşılaştırılması sonucunda anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur. Biçimlendirici değerlendirmeye dayalı öğretim uygulamalarının lise fen bilimleri dersleri ve öğretmen eğitimi programlarında yaygınlaştırılmasına yönelik çalışmaların yapılması önerilmektedir. Despite the renovation of the curriculum in education faculties in 1997, research has revealed so... more Despite the renovation of the curriculum in education faculties in 1997, research has revealed some problems in School Experience and Teaching Practice courses. Specifically, problems were related to the quality, frequency, and type of feedback received (oral/written), lack of training for cooperating teachers and supervisors, an inadequate number of observations, and a lack of opportunities for feedback. This paper reports the preliminary results of a TUBITAK-Evrena project to help teacher trainees develop basic teaching skills while they are continuing their education in the education faculties. The project uses a “Clinical Supervision Model” (CSM) as a solution. To improve the quality of supervisory skills of cooperating teachers and university supervisors, the project researchers provided training to university supervisors and cooperating teachers about the CSM. The present research assesses the effectiveness of this training on the quality of supervision, feedback, communication skills, and professional behavior (punctuality, professional attire) of the university supervisors. The data for the study was collected from cooperating teachers and teacher trainees via questionnaires and an interview. Results indicated that there are statistically significant differences between supervisors who took CSM training and those who did not receive training. Teacher trainees and cooperating teachers had more positive opinions of CSM-trained supervisors. These results suggest that CSM techniques can increase the quality of supervisory skills.

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a guided inquiry method for science tea... more The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a guided inquiry method for science teaching on elementary pre-service teachers' self-efficacy beliefs. In the study a pretest/posttest one group research design was used. The study sample that consisted of 101 second year pre-service elementary teachers who are registered to a science laboratory course in the 2008 Spring semester. At the beginning of the study, the Elementary Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI) was completed by the participants. A 14-week science laboratory course was taken by the learners that was designed to use a guided inquiry teaching method with heavy reliance on the use of science process skills. At the end of the course the STEBI was again completed by the pre-service teachers. The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test with the SPSS 16.00 program at the 0.01 significance level. Focus group interviews were also conducted with 10 groups of participants after they completed the course. Qualitative and quantitative findings indicated that levels of participants' efficacy expectations and outcome expectations on posttest scores were higher than the pretest scores. The paper also presents the effectiveness of a guided inquiry method to increase the sense of self-efficacy beliefs of pre-service teachers in science teaching.

The authors review the research on sand play and present a small study on outdoor sand play conducted at a university-based, child-development center using a method they call facilitated-action research. This study had four primary purposes: to detail who played in the sand area by age and gender; to identify any children who did not play in sand at all; to record what kinds of play sand encouraged; and to determine the effects of adding new play materials to the sand area. The authors conclude with some suggestions for further research.

The intent of this research is to evaluate the use of a formative assessment probe about balance ... more The intent of this research is to evaluate the use of a formative assessment probe about balance and torque. The lesson was conducted with 52, 11 th grade students studying in two physics classes at a state high school. A formative assessment probe was used at both the beginning and end of the study. After the students' prior knowledge about equilibrium and torque was determined, the demonstration experiment on this topic was applied to include the processes of Predict-Explain-Observe-Explain. At the beginning of the instruction most students believed that the weights of the objects on both sides were equal, though they in fact cannot be equal in the physical situation shown. After instruction, students showed significant increase on their conceptual understanding of the topic. Applications of this research include using formative assessment probes followed by experimentation in high school science classes as well as using such methods in teacher preparation programs.

A single case study was selected as the research design. The study group consisted of primary and secondary school principals, one female and three males, working in the schools where the project was conducted. The main data collection tool of the study was interviews with the school principals. In addition, the study was supported with researcher observations and documents. The data were analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. The data were analyzed with a descriptive, explanatory and interpretive perspective in the context of noise prevention at schools. Four main themes emerged from the interviews with principals regarding noise at schools: "the noise problem," "administrative leadership," "educational leadership," and "solution suggestions," The results show that participating in a project to prevent noise at schools has increased principals' awareness of noise and improved their leadership qualities in solving the noise problem. Principals think that their schools are quieter than before and that the average academic success of their schools has increased. As a result, it has been determined that acoustic improvement, noise awareness training, rulemaking, discipline, value creation, and culture formation are needed to create a quiet learning environment at schools.

Çalışmada karma desen yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Nesnel veri olarak desibelmetre ile okulun gürültü düzeyi ve sınıfların reverberasyon süresi ölçülmüştür. Öznel veri olarak okul yöneticisi ve öğretmenler ile okulun akustik konforu hakkında görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Desibelmetre ile yapılan ses düzeyi ve reveberasyon ölçüm sonuçları, yönetmelikte belirtilen sınır değerlerinin iki katını aştığını göstermiştir. Okuldaki gürültü düzeyinin çok yüksek olduğu ve aşırı miktarda rahatsız edici olduğu, okul yöneticisi ve okulun öğretmenleri ile yapılan görüşmelerdeki nesnel bulguları doğrulamıştır. Görüşmelerin nitel analizinden gürültünün 'Nedenleri', 'Etkileri' ve 'Gürültünün Kontrol Edilmesi' temalarına ulaşılmıştır. Öğretmenlerin rol model olma yerine, bağırarak gürültüyü bastırma çabaları, yöneticilerin şiddeti yüksek zil sesi tercihleri, öğrencilerin okul binası içinde bile yüksek sesle konuşma, bağırma, çığlık atma ve koşma gibi davranışları, yan sınıftan veya bahçeden sınıfa gelen sesler, temel gürültü nedenleri olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Okulda gürültünün öğretmenler üzerine olumsuz etkileri: 1) dikkat dağıtıcı olması ve motivasyon düşürmesi, 2) işini rahatlıkla yapamama, 3) işitme kaybı ve cihaz kullanımı, 4) öğrencilerin gürültücü davranışları ile başa çıkmakta çaresiz kalması, 5) okuldaki gürültüden kaynaklı özel hayatında iletişim sorunları yaşama ve 6) mesleki aidiyet duyusunda azalma ve emekliye ayrılmaya karar verme şeklinde sıralanabilir. Sonuç olarak, nesnel bulgular okulda gürültü kirliliği olgusunu ortaya koyarken, öznel bulgular gürültü kaynaklı oluşan mağduriyetin ciddiyetini gözler önüne sermektedir. Okul binalarının mühendislik tedbirlerle akustiğinin iyileştirmesi ve eğitim yoluyla sükûnetli öğrenme ortamı ve kültürünün yaratılması gerekmektedir.

Teaching practice develops three-way partnerships among the university, cooperating school, and t... more Teaching practice develops three-way partnerships among the university, cooperating school, and the teacher trainee to improve trainees’ performance in the classroom. The partnership becomes meaningful when stakeholders are fully engaged in mutual cooperation. In order to facilitate collaboration and communication among the stakeholders, a web-based Learning Management System, entitled UludagKDM was developed as part of a Tübitak-EVRENA project. This study, qualitative in nature, was conducted with university supervisors and teacher trainees to examine the effectiveness of UludagKDM regarding its organizational and communicational aspects. The data, analyzed through categorization of themes, revealed that the existing system needs to be re-examined or another social media should be considered for the purposes of communication and feedback.

Mixed method integrating both quantitative and qualitative methods was used in the research. In the quantitative part of the research quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The study group of the research consisted of 41 7th grade students attending a middle school in Eskisehir (22 experimental, 19 control group). Four open-ended questions prepared by the researcher teacher were applied to both groups as pretest and posttest. Pretest data of the experimental and control groups were compared and no significant difference between average test scores was detected. A constant comparison method was used to analyze two participants’ answers to seven guided reflection questions in a field assignment. Analyses of the field assignments gave a detailed portrait of how they applied hands-on activities at learning stations to change their students’ alternative conceptions and improve their initial understanding. Four critical factors emerged that might have affected their overall performance such as the degree of support provided by classroom teachers; the amount of time needed to plan, prepare, and implement the stations; the way of analyzing the data collected from their students in a systematic way, and the level of understanding of conceptual change terminology. The study was carried out with 20 primary school 3rd and 4th grade student volunteers. Research data are the pictures drawn by the children and the semi-structured interview records. From the analysis of the students' drawings, three main themes, namely "visual indicator", "sign", and "symbol" are identified in this paper. The reasons for the noise in the school are depicted quite well in the student pictures; noise is reflected as a phenomenon that is disturbing, destructive, threatening physiological-psychological health, and negatively affecting social life and learning in school. Bu çalışmanın amacı denge ve tork ile ilgili gündelik yaşamdan bir biçimlendirici değerlendirme s... more Bu çalışmanın amacı denge ve tork ile ilgili gündelik yaşamdan bir biçimlendirici değerlendirme sorusu kullanarak yapılan öğretim uygulamasını tanıtmak ve değerlendirmektir. Uygulama bir devlet lisesinde fizik dersinde iki şubede öğrenim gören toplam 52 tane, 11. sınıf öğrencileriyle gerçekleştirilmiştir. Veri toplama aracı olarak denge ve tork ile ilgili biçimlendirici yoklama sorusu çalışma başında ve sonunda kullanılmıştır. Öğrencilerin denge ve tork ile ilgili sahip oldukları bilgiler ortaya çıkarıldıktan sonra, bu konuda hazırlanan gösteri deneyi Tahmin-Açıklama-Gözlem-Açıklama süreçlerini içerecek şekilde uygulanmıştır. Öğrencilerin yapmış oldukları tahminlerin frekansı ve açıklamaların örnekleri sunularak değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Uygulama öncesinde öğrencilerin çoğunluğunun özdeş olmayan nesnelerin ağırlık merkezinde her iki taraftaki ağırlığın eşit olduğu düşüncesine sahip oldukları anlaşılmıştır, ancak bunun fiziksel olarak mümkün olmadığı çalışmada gösterilmiştir. Yapılan uygulama sonrasında, öğrencilerin denge ve tork konusundaki kavramsal anlama düzeylerinin karşılaştırılması sonucunda anlamlı bir fark bulunmuştur. Despite the renovation of the curriculum in education faculties in 1997, research has revealed so... more Despite the renovation of the curriculum in education faculties in 1997, research has revealed some problems in School Experience and Teaching Practice courses. Specifically, problems were related to the quality, frequency, and type of feedback received (oral/written), lack of training for cooperating teachers and supervisors, an inadequate number of observations, and a lack of opportunities for feedback. This paper reports the preliminary results of a TUBITAK-Evrena project to help teacher trainees develop basic teaching skills while they are continuing their education in the education faculties. The project uses a “Clinical Supervision Model” (CSM) as a solution. To improve the quality of supervisory skills of cooperating teachers and university supervisors, the project researchers provided training to university supervisors and cooperating teachers about the CSM. The present research assesses the effectiveness of this training on the quality of supervision, feedback, communication skills, and professional behavior (punctuality, professional attire) of the university supervisors. The data for the study was collected from cooperating teachers and teacher trainees via questionnaires and an interview. Results indicated that there are statistically significant differences between supervisors who took CSM training and those who did not receive training. Teacher trainees and cooperating teachers had more positive opinions of CSM-trained supervisors. These results suggest that CSM techniques can increase the quality of supervisory skills.

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a guided inquiry method for science tea... more The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a guided inquiry method for science teaching on elementary pre-service teachers' self-efficacy beliefs. In the study a pretest/posttest one group research design was used. The study sample that consisted of 101 second year pre-service elementary teachers who are registered to a science laboratory course in the 2008 Spring semester. At the beginning of the study, the Elementary Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI) was completed by the participants. A 14-week science laboratory course was taken by the learners that was designed to use a guided inquiry teaching method with heavy reliance on the use of science process skills. At the end of the course the STEBI was again completed by the pre-service teachers. The data were analyzed by using paired sample t-test with the SPSS 16.00 program at the 0.01 significance level. Focus group interviews were also conducted with 10 groups of participants after they completed the course. Qualitative and quantitative findings indicated that levels of participants' efficacy expectations and outcome expectations on posttest scores were higher than the pretest scores. The paper also presents the effectiveness of a guided inquiry method to increase the sense of self-efficacy beliefs of pre-service teachers in science teaching.

The authors review the research on sand play and present a small study on outdoor sand play conducted at a university-based, child-development center using a method they call facilitated-action research. This study had four primary purposes: to detail who played in the sand area by age and gender; to identify any children who did not play in sand at all; to record what kinds of play sand encouraged; and to determine the effects of adding new play materials to the sand area. The authors conclude with some suggestions for further research.

The intent of this research is to evaluate the use of a formative assessment probe about balance ... more The intent of this research is to evaluate the use of a formative assessment probe about balance and torque. The lesson was conducted with 52, 11 th grade students studying in two physics classes at a state high school. A formative assessment probe was used at both the beginning and end of the study. After the students' prior knowledge about equilibrium and torque was determined, the demonstration experiment on this topic was applied to include the processes of Predict-Explain-Observe-Explain. At the beginning of the instruction most students believed that the weights of the objects on both sides were equal, though they in fact cannot be equal in the physical situation shown. After instruction, students showed significant increase on their conceptual understanding of the topic. Applications of this research include using formative assessment probes followed by experimentation in high school science classes as well as using such methods in teacher preparation programs.

A single case study was selected as the research design. The study group consisted of primary and secondary school principals, one female and three males, working in the schools where the project was conducted. The main data collection tool of the study was interviews with the school principals. In addition, the study was supported with researcher observations and documents. The data were analyzed with inductive thematic analysis. The data were analyzed with a descriptive, explanatory and interpretive perspective in the context of noise prevention at schools. Four main themes emerged from the interviews with principals regarding noise at schools: "the noise problem," "administrative leadership," "educational leadership," and "solution suggestions," The results show that participating in a project to prevent noise at schools has increased principals' awareness of noise and improved their leadership qualities in solving the noise problem. Principals think that their schools are quieter than before and that the average academic success of their schools has increased. As a result, it has been determined that acoustic improvement, noise awareness training, rulemaking, discipline, value creation, and culture formation are needed to create a quiet learning environment at schools.

Çalışmada karma desen yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Nesnel veri olarak desibelmetre ile okulun gürültü düzeyi ve sınıfların reverberasyon süresi ölçülmüştür. Öznel veri olarak okul yöneticisi ve öğretmenler ile okulun akustik konforu hakkında görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Desibelmetre ile yapılan ses düzeyi ve reveberasyon ölçüm sonuçları, yönetmelikte belirtilen sınır değerlerinin iki katını aştığını göstermiştir. Okuldaki gürültü düzeyinin çok yüksek olduğu ve aşırı miktarda rahatsız edici olduğu, okul yöneticisi ve okulun öğretmenleri ile yapılan görüşmelerdeki nesnel bulguları doğrulamıştır. Görüşmelerin nitel analizinden gürültünün 'Nedenleri', 'Etkileri' ve 'Gürültünün Kontrol Edilmesi' temalarına ulaşılmıştır. Öğretmenlerin rol model olma yerine, bağırarak gürültüyü bastırma çabaları, yöneticilerin şiddeti yüksek zil sesi tercihleri, öğrencilerin okul binası içinde bile yüksek sesle konuşma, bağırma, çığlık atma ve koşma gibi davranışları, yan sınıftan veya bahçeden sınıfa gelen sesler, temel gürültü nedenleri olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Okulda gürültünün öğretmenler üzerine olumsuz etkileri: 1) dikkat dağıtıcı olması ve motivasyon düşürmesi, 2) işini rahatlıkla yapamama, 3) işitme kaybı ve cihaz kullanımı, 4) öğrencilerin gürültücü davranışları ile başa çıkmakta çaresiz kalması, 5) okuldaki gürültüden kaynaklı özel hayatında iletişim sorunları yaşama ve 6) mesleki aidiyet duyusunda azalma ve emekliye ayrılmaya karar verme şeklinde sıralanabilir. Sonuç olarak, nesnel bulgular okulda gürültü kirliliği olgusunu ortaya koyarken, öznel bulgular gürültü kaynaklı oluşan mağduriyetin ciddiyetini gözler önüne sermektedir. Okul binalarının mühendislik tedbirlerle akustiğinin iyileştirmesi ve eğitim yoluyla sükûnetli öğrenme ortamı ve kültürünün yaratılması gerekmektedir.

The partnership becomes meaningful when stakeholders are fully engaged in mutual cooperation. In order to facilitate collaboration and communication among the stakeholders, a web-based Learning Management System, entitled UludagKDM was developed as part of a Tübitak-EVRENA project. This study, qualitative in nature, was conducted with university supervisors and teacher trainees to examine the effectiveness of UludagKDM regarding its organizational and communicational aspects. The data, analyzed through categorization of themes, revealed that the existing system needs to be re-examined or another social media should be considered for the purposes of communication and feedback.

The study group of the research consisted of 41 7th grade students attending a middle school in Eskisehir (22 experimental, 19 control group). A constant comparison method was used to analyze two participants’ answers to seven guided reflection questions in a field assignment. Analyses of the field assignments gave a detailed portrait of how they applied hands-on activities at learning stations to change their students’ alternative conceptions and improve their initial understanding.
