The goal of SMHC is to dramatically improve student achievement in large, urban public school dis... more The goal of SMHC is to dramatically improve student achievement in large, urban public school districts by restructuring their human capital management systems. SMHC reforms aim to recruit top teacher, principal and central office talent and to performance-manage those individuals to improve the effectiveness of instruction in all classrooms. As part of this effort, SMHC is conducting case studies of effective SMHC practices in leading-edge districts and organizations. The case studies focus on the three major elements of all human capital management practices: talent acquisition, talent development and motivation and talent retention, as discussed in the foundational paper defining SMHC by Odden and Kelly (2008). SMHC case studies have been completed in the following districts:

This study reviews existing evidence related to the question of whether or not to increase federa... more This study reviews existing evidence related to the question of whether or not to increase federal support for preschool service's-in general, and center facilities, in particular. The findings do not indicate a current or impending overall shortage of early childhood services or that low- income families suffer inequities in the costs or distfibution of care. Further, no evidence was found of long-term child benefits that would justify a large, immediate increase in federal expenditures for custodial or educational services for preschool children. Five policy conclusions are drawn: (1) proposals for increased federal support of day care do not reflect any clear and present national need; (2) adjustments should'be made in the present system which mould provide th same profile of incentives for families at all income levels, respond to individualthoices in the style and setting pf day care services, And reflect realistic assessment of the value of currently demonstrated

Unhealthful lifestyle behaviors are a primary source of the global burden of noncommunicable dise... more Unhealthful lifestyle behaviors are a primary source of the global burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and account for about 63 % of all global deaths. Recently, there has been an increased interest in evaluating the benefit of adhering to low-risk lifestyle behaviors and ideal cardiovascular health metrics. Although a healthful lifestyle has repeatedly been shown to improve mortality, the population prevalence of healthy living remains low. The new discipline of lifestyle medicine has recently emerged as a systematized approach for the management of chronic disease. The practice of lifestyle medicine requires skills and competency in addressing multiple health risk behaviors and improving self-management. This article focuses on the effects of a healthful lifestyle on chronic disease and defining lifestyle medicine as a unique discipline. This study examines the relationship between hospital volunteers' gender and their motivation to ... more This study examines the relationship between hospital volunteers' gender and their motivation to volunteer. An empirical analysis of survey data from 426 volunteers shows significant differences between the two groups. That is, the factors that motivate male volunteer workers are significantly different from those that motivate female volunteers. Some explanations as well as generalizations and implications for hospital administrators and human resources managers are developed.
