This was in order to observe the effect of accelerated carbonation. The solidified wastes exposed to carbon dioxide failed to demonstrate the improved strength and heavy metal retention reported elsewhere. The results suggested that the waste forms had not undergone sufficient carbonation. Subsequent modifications to the mix design, sample size and conditioning period produced a more carbonated material. Leaching tests conducted on the carbonated solidified waste and analogous samples exposed to laboratory air demonstrated a considerable improvement in metal retention. The study also addressed the effect of carbonating the stabilised waste prior to solidification. In this instance, however, the results were inconclusive.

The model provides a good fit to the observed data and limited data sets reported in the literature. Subsequently, it is used as an input into a finite element analysis to provide
