Patients complain of vivid hallucinations that usually occur in hypnagogic states but maintain critical appraisal. Pathological disruption of the reticular activating systems partially explains this clinical phenomenon. We report the case of a 47-year-old man presenting with peduncular hallucinosis associated with central auditory disturbance consisting of bilateral hypoacusis and left-sided paradoxical hyperacusis, secondary to a pontine haemorrhage.

Cranial dural leaks have been previously reported as a cause of orthostatic headaches but, as opposed to spinal dural leaks, were not associated with other findings characteristic of spontaneous intracranial hypotension. We present the case of a male admitted for severe orthostatic headache. The patient had a history of intermittent postural headaches, dizziness, and symptoms consistent with post-nasal drip, which appeared several years after head trauma. Brain imaging showed signs consistent with intracranial hypotension: bilateral hygromas, subarachnoid hemorrhage, superficial siderosis, diffuse contrast enhancement of the pachymeninges, and superior sagittal sinus engorgement. No spinal leak could be identified by magnetic resonance imaging, and the patient had a rapid remission of symptoms with conservative management. Furth...

Lesions involving the dento-rubro-olivary pathways may lead to pseudo-hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus with subsequent neuronal degeneration. A number of clinical syndromes have been linked to hypertrophic olivary degeneration. Cases of gait ataxia, Holmes tremor and symptomatic palatal and oculo-palatal tremor were associated with this condition. We hereby report a case of disabling Holmes tremor and gait ataxia associated with palatal tremor in a 45-year-old patient with a prior brainstem haemorrhage.

The presence of a resting left ventricular outflow obstruction in patients with HCM has been well described and is associated with increased symptoms and adverse long-term outcomes. However, less is known about patients with latent obstruction. METHODS Four hundred fifteen patients with echocardiographic or catheterization findings of latent obstruction, defined as a left ventricular outflow pressure gradient <30 mm Hg at rest, which increases to > or =30 mm Hg with provocation, were identified and included in the study group. RESULTS The mean age was 55.0 +/- 17.9, and 226 (54.6%) patients were male. There were 330 (79.5%) patients with New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class I and II at baseline. Fifty-nine (17.9%) of these patients had symptom progression requiring septal reduction therapy. Eighty-five patients had severe symptoms (NYHA functional class III and IV) at baseline, and 23 (27.1%) underwent septal reduction. Overall survival at 1, 5, and 10 years was 98%, 91%, and 81%, respectively. Survival among patients after undergoing invasive relief of outflow obstruction was equivalent to the general US population. CONCLUSIONS Latent obstruction in HCM is an important pathophysiologic entity and may cause heart failure symptoms. One-third of patients in this referral series required invasive therapy for relief of symptoms. The evaluation of HCM patients with resting outflow tract gradients <30 mm Hg must include provocative maneuvers to identify this substantial subset of patients, preferably by physiologic exercise.

The aim of this paper is to provide a thorough textual analysis of the passage entitled Sistre which appears at the end of the second part of Assia Djebar's novel " L'Amour, la fantasia " , and which functions as mise en abyme. 1. Both of these works of fiction explore the human mind's propensity for engendering fantastic worlds, utopic dream lands as spaces of transcendence into immortality and ideality. In contrast with Nabokov's " Ultima Thule, " which depicts the personal drama of a lonely artist who, desperately mourning the loss of his wife and unborn child, unsuccessfully tries to resurrect his beloved through art, Borges's " Thlon, Uqbar, Urbis Tertius " deals with a secret society of scientists and scholars' invention of an imaginary, dystopic country which ultimately succeeds in encroaching on reality, threatening to obliterate it. The circumstances in which Nabokov and Borges wrote each of their stories bear a salient resemblance. Nabokov's fathers dies of a bullet intended for his friend. Borges father dies in 1938. Death as a personal reality, contemplated through the metaphysical lens of fiction informs both stories and establishes itself as the deep undercurrent motivating and sustaining the scope of such outlandish fantasies. One could even consider death as an unnamed character is these texts. Underscoring the fictional conceit of each of the two texts examined here is the deep existential probing of the individual power's to preserve their identity and survive being leveled by Death,

A pilot project combines these disciplines for the first time at the College of Charleston. The On-Line Geographical Information System for the Theban Necropolis (OLGIS-TN), an exciting new interdisciplinary initiative, is the brainchild of professors Peter Piccione (history), Kem Fronabarger (geology) and Norm Levine (geology). The three scientists are exploring the interaction between the Egyptians and their environment. Their studies of palaeoecology will show how the Egyptians physically changed their environment, what limitations this environment posed on them, and also, how mindful Egyptians were of geology in choosing tomb locations and in building tombs. The three CofC scientists are currently focusing on the necropolis of Western Thebes (on the West Bank of the modern city of Luxor, Egypt).

Of more notable mention is Oana Strugaru’s Andrei Codrescu in the Textual Space of Up-rootedness (Andrei Codrescu în spaţiul textual al dezrădăcinării), (2014), and Kirby Olson’s Andrei Codrescu and the Myth of America (2006). It is important to remark that articles published in Romania about Andrei Codrescu’s work pay almost exclusive attention to the literature, as other article length studies indicate.
It becomes readily apparent upon a cursory examination of the secondary sources that Andrei Codrescu’s work has served as object of inquiry for radically different schools of thought in the Romanian and the American academic setting. While the Romanian scholarship focuses predominantly of formalist, text based aspects of Codrescu’s work, the American scholarship has delved into matters pertaining to new historicism , and digital archives.
