Research paper thumbnail of A Mixed Load Solution for the Rural School Bus Routing Problem

2015 IEEE 18th International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2015

We use a complete set of real georeferenced data containing 716 students, 23 schools, and the road network. Our goal is to minimize the total traveled distance of a heterogeneous fleet. We compare our strategy to a single load approach in order to highlight the improvements achieved by using a mixed load strategy. When we compare a mixed load to a single load strategy, we observe that: i) the mixed load strategy reduces the variable cost (total traveled distance) on approximately 20%; ii) the mixed load approach reduces the fixed cost (fleet size) from 28.2% up to 37.8%; iii) the mixed load approach increases the buses occupation in approximately 20%.

This Report aims to give a detailed account of the study of rural school transportation in Minas ... more This Report aims to give a detailed account of the study of rural school transportation in Minas Gerais and propose a routing method to create better routes to attend rural students and schools. The federal government of Minas Gerais launched a three-year program to establish new school bus lines in rural parts of the state. This government project's goal is to give better access to basic services such as schooling in poorer areas of the country in order to contribute to their development and make their life conditions better. The situation of rural school transportation in Brazil is shown in this paper. The analysis of the conditions of school transportation and comparison with school transportation in other countries, such as the United States or France, will show that action is necessary for the development of rural areas of the state. This will bring to introduce the new federal government project that aims to create new school bus lines around the state to guarantee better access to education. In this very important project, which has many different universities and private companies are working on, the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, with the Transport laboratory NucleTrans, held by Pr. Marcelo Franco Porto, has been given the task to establish a routing method to be used on the municipalities concerned by the project, and establish a methodology. In order to understand how a methodology can be established for school bus routing, it is necessary to contextualize the different existing methods for solving the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). Thus, the focus was turned upon the heuristic methods that are able to find a "good" solution to the problem. The performance of the heuristics was tested for the city of Governador Valadares. The results of this test were also discussed in this paper.

This plant washes two different kinds of bauxite ore, one originating from the laterization of gnaisses and another from amphybolites. Both ores have the same behavior in the coarser size fractions but behave differently under 0.355 mm (42# Tyler). In these small sizes, gneissic ores are rich in quartz and amphybolitic ores are rich in iron and titanium bearing ores. The unit operations are: scrubbing of the feed in drum scrubbers, desliming in cyclones, and screening of the scrubbed bauxite in high frequency screens (0.355 mm) - the +0.355 mm product is a final concentrate. The -0.355 mm fraction is desliming in two stage cyclones and goes to a fines gravity concentration circuit of Reichert spirals complemented by magnetic separation of the light product from the spirals. The research work, including mineralogy, process development, batch tests and pilot plant tests, is described and compared...

Research paper thumbnail of A real geographical application for the School Bus Routing Problem

We use a complete set of real georeferenced data containing a sample of 944 students, 23 schools, and the full road network of a city of population of 280,000 inhabitants occupying an area of 2,348 km 2. Our goal is to optimize the daily transportation of students considering the real publicly available fleet composed of heterogeneous vehicles. As our solution is being evaluated for application over the entire country, we have included some 'quality' parameters for tunning the application to distinct economic/social realities. A mixed integer linear programming model and a GRASP based algorithm are proposed to solve the routing problem.

In order to tackle these determinants, and inspired by WHO's international Healthy Communities/Cities movement, the Network of Healthy Communities of Rio de Janeiro was formed in 2004. The Network is coordinated by the Center for Health Promotion (CEDAPS) and now includes more than 100 community groups and organizations in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Their aim is to promote health, community development and equity through community empowerment, participation, capacity building and advocacy. The paper describes the work that has been done since the Network's inception and the challenges which they face to reach their goals in the context of a country like Brazil. The Network represents an important landmark of how poor populations can ...

Its biosynthesis is catalyzed by the enzyme Choline acetyltransferase that is considered to be a phenotypically specific marker for cholinergic system. It is well known that the regulation of Choline acetyltransferase activity under physiological and pathological conditions is important for development and neuronal activities of cholinergic functions. We observed the distribution of Choline acetyltransferase in sections from the normal and denervated main electric organ sections of Electrophorus electricus (L.) by immunofluorescence using a anti-Choline acetyltransferase antibody. The animals were submitted to a surgical procedure to remove about 20 nerves and after 30 and 60 days, they were sacrificed. After 30 days, the results from immunohistochemistry demonstrated an increase on the Choline acetyltransferase distribution at denervated tissue sections when compared with the sections from the normal contralateral organ. A very similar labeling was observed between normal and denervated tissue sections of the animals after 60 days. However, Choline acetyltransferase activity (nmolesACh/ min/ mg of protein) in extracts obtained from electrocyte microsomal preparation, estimated by Fonnun's method (Fonnun 1975), was 70% lower in the denervated extracts.
