The human person is accepted or rejected on the basis of the moral codes set by and with which man lives his life. Every society holds its individual member accountable and subsequently demands compliance to its moral laws. Relying on the Yoruba moral principle and through character analysis of Lola Soneyin"s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives, the paper examines the author"s radical departure from the moral norm, through which the Yoruba view their world. It is established that, most female characters provide justification for their sexual escapades outside their matrimony. Consequently, the author has impliedly sanctioned moral vices, especially adultery, within the context of constant threat, as a result of inability to have children. I have argued that, the justification provided by the author of the novel for extra marital escapades, especially by her female characters, is unacceptable. I concluded that, virtuous act should never be sacrificed on the altar of any radical ideology. This is because literature, in my view, is the most important and richest source of insight into moral codes and as such should be in favour of the best moral standard.

Its formulation, codification or unification as well as interpretation are major factors in determining the credibility of the criminal justice system and the level of legal conformity. The letter and spirit of the law are defeated when its formation, modulations, interpretation and enforcement are not products of the history and cultural values of a people. The focus in this paper therefore is an examination of the administration of justice in Nigeria through a textual analysis of selected Nigerian Video Drama. How do these characters treat or respond to law? Do judicial or legal officers (lawyers, judges, police, and prison officials) conform to rules in the discharge of their duties? Is there any consciousness of legality in the text? These and other questions are answered in this paper. Combining the historical and realist theories, this paper affirmed that if the justice system of a nation does not grow from its cultural values and history, the level of compliance would be reduced. The paper also established that judicial officers' ethical values would be grossly influenced and affected by a legal system that is not a product of national consciousness. The paper concluded that when a particular legal system within a multi-ethnic nation ignores its

Deploying Marxist literary theory, the paper focused on the effects and the implications of socio-economic evolution in A Market of Betrayals by examining the prevailing mode of production in the play, the type of social relations that exist among the people and govern their relation; those who determine these rules and the means of enforcing them as well as the implication for the opposing force and the society at large. Through textual analysis, it is established that the inherent contradictions in the world of A Market of Betrayals stem from the hidden selfish interest and hypocrisy of the dominant economic force which is in conflict with the interest of the working class. The hidden interests are presented as having universal values meant for the well-being of the people. The pape...

Research paper thumbnail of Technologising Orality: A Reflection on Femi Lasode’s ‘Sango’

This paper assessed Lasode's deployment of oral and film aesthetics in reconstructing the story of the legendary hero-god, Sango. It focused on the narratology of the text, in its adaptation of oral materials. Relying on the concepts of adaptation and translation, the paper adopted character and thematic analytical approach. The paper established that, the film-text has combined technology with orality to present Sango, not only as a legendary figure who inundation his world with mystic grandeur but a tragic hero whose misfortune arises from the bitter politics of his time and whose moral lapses leave a pattern for the modern society to learn from. Technology is deployed to demonstrate the adaptability and continuous relevance of oral materials, (drum, songs, chant, gong, flute and myth) to achieve harmony between the past and the present. Furthermore, songs and drums become the non-human character, motivating, warning, instructing and informing humans in their interactions with one another. In all, Lasode used technology to demonstrate the adaptability and continual relevance of oral material in contemporary narratives.
