Malignant pleural effusions (MPE) are a common clinical problem in patients with neoplastic disea... more Malignant pleural effusions (MPE) are a common clinical problem in patients with neoplastic disease. In adults, 95% of neoplastic pleural effusions arise from a metastatic source, with lung and breast carcinoma accounting for 75% of all cases. Median survival following diagnosis ranges from 3 to 12 months and is dependent on the stage and type of the underlying malignancy. Most pleural metastases arise from tumor emboli to the visceral pleural surface, with secondary seeding to the parietal pleura. Other possible mechanisms include direct tumor invasion, hematogenous spread to parietal pleura, and lymphatic involvement. Dyspnoea is the most common presenting symptom and is occasionally accompanied by chest pain and cough. Chest radiographs confirm the size and location of the pleural collection. Thoracocentesis is usually diagnostic and also therapeutic. Exudative and hemorrhagic collections should be considered metastatic until proved otherwise. Various modalities are available in ...

Six exotic potato genotypes named Actrice, Cereza, Margarita, Messi, Picobella, and Sunred, along... more Six exotic potato genotypes named Actrice, Cereza, Margarita, Messi, Picobella, and Sunred, along with four check varieties, were evaluated at different locations (agroecological region) of Bangladesh in three consecutive years, 2016-17 to 2018-19 respectively to find out some stable genotypes for commercial cultivation in Bangladesh. Combined analysis of variance showed a highly significant difference among the genotypes, locations, and GEI for all the characters studied. None of the genotypes were found suitable for early harvesting (65 DAP), but when the full maturity was considered, significant variations were found for different tuber qualities and yield. During the third year, the mean highest yield was observed in Sunred (39.86 t ha-1), closely followed by Margarita (37.57 t ha-1). All the tested genotypes yielded more than 30 t ha-1 and were better than the checks. Dry matter content was the highest in the check variety Lady Rosetta (20.09%). None of the tested genotypes were better than the check varieties in dry matter content, quite unsuitable for processing. Sunred produced a very large-sized uniform and smooth tubers with a medium-high dry matter. If its dry matter content can be increased by 2-3% giving intensive agronomic management, this variety may be suitable for French Fry production. All the exotic genotypes were suitable as table potatoes. Picobella was the most stable, but the average yield is low. Considering the yield and other qualities, Sunred, Margarita, Cereza and Actrice may be further evaluated in large plots for commercial cultivation before releasing as variety.

An experiment was conducted to study the role of NAA and different explants on callus induction o... more An experiment was conducted to study the role of NAA and different explants on callus induction of potato varieties. There were three factors such as variety (Diamant, Heera and Cardinal), explants (leaves and internodes) and NAA levels (0, 2, 3, 4, 5 mg L-1). The experiment was laid out in complete randomized design with three replications. Minimum 6-8 days was required for callus initiation of internode of Cardinal in 3 mg L-1 NAA while the maximum 22-25 days was required for internode of Cardinal in 5 mg L-1 NAA. Both the leaf and internode of Heera produced 100% callus while Cardinal produced minimum callus (37.7 and 20.8% for leaf and internode, respectively) in 5 mg L-1 NAA. Neither leaf nor internode produced callus without NAA. Internode of Diamant, Heera and Cardinal produced 100% compact calli in 4, 3 and 5 mg L-1 NAA respectively. Leaf of Diamant without NAA produced the highest weight (0.667 g) of callus after one month. After two months, internode of Cardinal showed the highest weight (0.205 g) of calli in 3 mg L-1 NAA. Therefore, the present protocol has the potential for the rapid multiplication of true-to-type clones without changing the genetic fidelity.
