A comparative descriptive analysis of projects within two teacher preparation programs-one focused on training undergraduates and one focused on training graduate studentsillustrates how service-learning, when undergirded by student voice work, prepares prospective educators to teach for social justice in urban classrooms. We identify commonalities in our two approaches to integrating service-learning and student voice into the teacher education curriculum, and we show how our distinctive efforts support prospective teachers in developing the relationships, reflections, and practices they need to become effective educators of urban youth.

In this study, we build on existing research and theory by defining "othering" as a personal, social, cultural, and historical experience involving (a) cultural and racial ambiguity, (b) categorization and labeling, (c) hierarchical power dynamics, and (d) limited access to resources. In addition, we further define and understand youths' cultural assets from a collectivistic perspective. We are interested in identifying and understanding community and indigenous strengths of "othered" youth as embedded in social and ecological systems.

A culturally responsive intervention program, Wear Your Pride, was developed, implemented, and evaluated with 58 low-income Samoan American middle and high school students living in the San Francisco Bay Area. The goal of the intervention was to promote social support, leadership skills, community involvement, and resilience. Surveys administered before and after the program indicate participants' levels of social support, leadership, community engagement, and resilience all significantly increased after the 8-session program. Implications for research and practice in intervention programs are discussed.
